I'm interested in doing this border bounce as I'm getting a little tired of going to Chiang Khong. And the last time I went there was a very long detour because the road construction on the last leg of the road to CK was flooded from all the rain. I need to bounce this Sunday or next Monday the 30th. Perhaps I'm not googling with the correct terms or something but I can't find anything about doing a border bounce there (exactly where to go to get the proper map route, where to park, where exactly the Thai Immigration checkpoint is, hours of operation and so forth). Also I just read that there are 4 border checkpoints. Which is the correct place to go? Could anyone share any web links that gives some information? Thank you very much in advance.

I'm sorry, I couldn't find the card and I forget where it was located. I think it was off of Chang Klan but can't remember where. Have you searched in Bangkok? There are many places there that will do it for you.

Fly to Khon Kaen - trust me this is the best option. I've done it a few times. Very easy, KK airport is very comfortable. Grab a room and wait for the bus that leaves in the middle of the night (there is only one bus per day from KK to Mukdahan and it is extremely comfortable). DON'T take the minivan that leaves every couple of hours. The vans are in very bad condition, the drivers drive very dangerously, A/C doesn't work, seats are oversold, etc. and the drive from KK to Mukdahan is by far the worst I have ever encountered anywhere in Thailand. At least on the bus you can sleep.

Number 2 on the list is 100% wrong. I've been 4 times in the last few months. 1800 includes the visa WHICH IS MANDATORY. It was 1500 in December/January and you paid at the bank in the back. Now you pay the IO directly and it's 1800.

The last couple of times we went, it was awful. Would never go there again. 10 years ago it was a great option. Thing of the past.

He/she is confused and is talking about Golden Triangle to Laos SEZ by boat. You can drive to Chiang Khong in roughly the same time it takes to drive to Mae Sai - maybe 30 minutes longer. I don't know about CR, but you can catch a bus at Arcade at 9:30 A.M. to Chiang Khong. Arrives at 16:30. Tuk tuk to Immigration 50 Baht. Bus over Friendship Bridge 25 Baht each way. Laos visa cost fluctuates day to day. 1500-2000 Baht. You can stay in Huay Xai or in Chiang Khong. Lots of cheap options for food and accommodation on either side. I don't know about showing onward ticket. What kind of visa do you have?

That's not Huay Xai. You are referring to Chiang Saen. Altogether different.

Why? Chiang Khong is roughly the same distance and is very quiet. Much easier than Mae Sai. The visa process at Huay Xai takes about 10-15 minutes to get your passport back. The only difference is the price of the visa which fluctuates daily.

Just go to Huay Xai. Couldn't be easier. Very quiet there.
