  1. Hello all

I'm looking for the best, cheapest, way of transferring money out of my account in Australia to my account here.  Is there a better way that just doing it through my Australian bank who charges a fee and also clips the ticket on the ForEx rates, then I also get a charge from the bank here in Thailand.

I've done a comparison using the ATM here and withdrawing directly from my bank in Australia, it is significantly more expensive to do it this way.

    Any suggestions?

I've been told both QNAP and Synology are very good.  What about a WD My Cloud Pro?  These are fully contained and are supposed to be very easy to get started.  I'm looking mainly at video streaming, sharing and remote access?  Sounds a lot easier that buying a NAS then hard drives then pulling it all together?

  3. Thanks all.

I live in Bangkok and my first thought was to find someone to set this up for me, buy the kit etc.  No doubt there will be shops / people who can do this.  Can someone recommend a publication or web site for this sort of thing?

  4. Hello

I'm thinking about setting up my on home cloud system to store music, movies and photos on.  Using a QNAP multi disk system.  Trouble is I'm not that technically minded.

Does anyone know a company, vendor or someone who does this sort of stuff?

Just a few thoughts based on my experience:
1)8-10 years for an Isuzu pick up is not old. Just keep it for the farm. Don't use a new pick up for the farm. You should be able to use it at least another 10+ years.
    2) 4 door is not useful for the farm. 2 door or king cabs allow you bigger loads.
    3) 4x4 is rarely needed. Just get a 2x4.

So all in all why don't you just keep the old one for the farm and buy a new one for your other needs?

Yes it's not old in reality, but it has done a bit of work over the last couple of years and it's requiring more maintenance these days.

4 doors has worked well and my wife insists on any new pickup having 4 doors (happy wife happy life).

Dry season generally no need for 4x4, wet season is another matter.  Used it many a time to get out of trouble.

Certainly agree with the comments that have been made on second hand Vs new, better off buying new given no huge benefit from buying second hand.

Now it's what brand to look at buying.

    Thanks

  6. My wife drives our current Isuzu, she likes it and is generally OK when driving forward however seems to hit everything within a 50 meter radius when in reverse!

Anyway, I think it's either going to be another Isuzu or a Toyota.  While I like the Ford Ranger I've heard a lot of bad press about the service at the dealerships.  Our local Isuzu guys have been pretty good to deal with.

    Thanks

  7. Hi there

I have a Isuzu 4 door 4x4 auto which is now around 8 or 10 years old and I'm thinking about upgrading to a newer pickup.  My pickup does some farm work, not a lot but enough to need the 4x4, I also need 4 doors and automatic.  So the questions are, new or near new (second hand) and would you go for Isuzu, Toyota, Mitsubishi or Ford?

    Thanks

  8. Hello all

    A quick question.

I have been notified that my PR has come through and that I need to get to immigration with photos etc and the cash for the fee.

One of the items is original and copy of house registration.  I live in a rented apartment in Bangkok but own a house with my wife in Mukdahan.

So is the house registration from the apartment, therefore the owners house registration or our house registration from up country (which is what I believed we used for the PR application)?

  9. Thanks Chickenslegs, I did the same thing and that's pretty much it. Although the one in the Website listed is for sale in OZ, made in Thailand.

So my preference is to find one here, might take some time by the looks of it.

  10. Hello all

I'm not really sure where to post this, no doubt one of the Mods will move it to the appropriate location if required.

I was in JJ Mall a week or so ago and in one of the shops there they had a brass or bronze statue of a multi headed elephant with a Ganesh riding on it's back. It was a very interesting piece and quite unique. I spoke with the shop owner about it (it was there own personal statue and not for sale), they purchased from another shop just around the corner. I spoke with them and they said it was the only one they had seen in the years they had been in business.

I've looked through JJ Mall and through Chatuchuk and I've not been able find anything like this.

So the question is, does anyone know of any decent shops / markets in Bangkok other than Chatuchuk where something like this might be found?

  11. Hello all

A question on the paperwork requirements.

It's been mentioned that the installer needs to submit the initial paperwork to the PEA office in Bangkok, I'm guessing this is their main office in Chutuchuk? Is there a specific department?

What paperwork exactly needs to be submitted to this office?

My installer is being a little vague on this subject and as I mentioned I'm now not allowed by the local PEA guys to use my system until this is sorted. So I'm trying to get all the specifics to get things moving.

  12. Thanks Crossy, it's a PEA approved inverter, which both the list you sent and installer has confirmed.

Now I just need to jump all the hoops required to get it authorised.

  13. Hi Crossy

Good question about the inverter, I was told that it complies and the company I used for the system have many other installations, so I made the mistake of thinking I was well covered. I've contacted them and asked about the PEA authorization etc. I'm still waiting on a reply.

I hope you're right. A slap, well deserved, a fine or payment then onwards and upwards hopefully. Another useful lesson learnt.

  14. I've been here 10 years and I should have known better as well as done more homework.

We install a 5KW system on our house in Mukdahan in December solar company who are based in Phuket. They said it was all OK and that the local electricity authority are fine with solar systems as long as you do not allow your power meter to run into the negative range (the solar system feeds power back into the meter and the meter turns backwards when the system is generating).

The solar system is working well and we are most certainly saving money each month on our electricity bill. We have not allowed it to go negative but it has been very low.

The local power authority came to our house today and demanded that we switch off the system saying they had not given approval to fit it? They want to meet my wife as soon as she can go up country and they have also said they need to inspect the installation. Possibly ask for electricity fees for the last few months maybe a fine etc.

Obviously there is some need for authorisation by the local electricity people, which I was not made aware of by my solar installation company.

Am I in deep S@#& or does it mean I need to sort out the authorisation, pay a fine etc?

Yes, as I said. I should have know better, I trusted the solar company for the advise.
