Actually this is Britain's pathetic attempt to use threats to the EU to get a good a so called trade deal. It's so embarrassing, so par for the course!

BBC news are suggesting this could mean "self isolation" for 14 days when returning from "high risk" countries, Singapore & Thailand were mentioned!
Yes that is being repeated on most news items now. People are also being strongly advised to not travel to countries in South East Asia IF they are elderly, the young or infirm. The death toll is rising daily, more than a thousand so far, albeit mainly in mainland China
What I would say to those who are saying "it's just flu" is that, as you probably know, all old people and children in the UK are given flu jabs every year because, for them, flu can be fatal.

I imagine what made it harder was that this was a soldier in full combat uniform being hunted by soldiers in full combat uniform. All were within the same shopping mall' The risk of mistakenly shooting one of the good guys must have been pretty high. Kudos to them for bringing this to an end.

Next test for the government will be whether the HS2 gets the green light. This is a difficult one for Boris after his commitment to "the north". Hard for him to back out of it now although I can't really see that it is going to improve things much. It's easy enough to go up country now with flights and the current road network. I would have thought the money could be better spent IN the north rather than getting people there 20 minutes quicker.

Hopefully... onward and upwards from now on, although I wont hold my breath!
Yes it's best not to get too carried away. We are now entering the transition period so won't see any noticeable changes yet. We are still in the single market and customs union, still paying in and there is still freedom of movement. The only real difference today is that we no longer have a voice or a seat at the table.
Johnson has said he would get us out by the end of 2020 although there is a strong possibility that that will be extended by up to two more years. However now the negotiations will begin for any trade deals we can make and the nuts and bolts of the future relationship we will have with the EU. It is already agreed that all the laws will remain the same and they have been cut and pasted in British law. Very much a positive as that could have been an issue when negotiating border restrictions.
I will continue to sit on the fence rather than attack Johnson and his cronies before seeing what he does actually deliver. Signing up Huawei against the wishes of his pal Trump is a positive in my book but he has a long way to go yet.

I’m sad to see the U.K. in such a poor bargaining position when dealing with trump my advice would be to wait for change in 2020 if possible or offer Donald some shiney gong to stoke his ego otherwise he will try to extort your country
As amusing as your post is I think it is not far off of the mark. Surely best to wait until Trump is gone and then try and broker a deal that is acceptable to the UK. At the moment Trump will just see the UK as being in weak position and screw us as hard as he can. It then depends on how desperate Johnson is to sign, at least, some sort of trade deal no matter how bad.

I don't mean doctors and pharmacists, I mean ice addicts, pot heads, heroin users.
You forgot drunks mate. Far more people die from alcohol related incidents than drug related ones. I enjoy the odd spliff now and then so I guess in your book I am a pot head? I also enjoy my wine which I indulge in far more often. Maybe that makes me a drunkard too.

I have come to realise some posters on here want to see the UK do badly and others are just bitter.
How about that this will benefit Africa. More jobs for people.
People are bound to be sceptical given all the bull*hit and lies we have been fed over the last couple of years. I am not knocking Boris yet, just waiting to see where we are further down the line.

It is not surprising given the events of the last couple of years. Pledges broken and politicians lying about everything at the drop of a hat. We are probably just seeing the veneer of respectability being peeled back and what is underneath has been there all along. Britain is a country broken by those who are supposed to lead us. There is little chance of any trust being rebuilt until we clear out all the current shower of inadequate fools who we "employ" to govern us.
No quick fix I am afraid as this wound is very much self inflicted!

Laugh all you like, but it's been explained many times. Archie also has red hair and that's certainly not from his mother!
Whether Harry is Hewitt's son or not is really irrelevant. Let's not kid ourselves that Harry doesn't know what the country says about his parentage, something the media have had a heyday with for years. As far as I am concerned his work with the charities he supports puts him head and shoulders above many other members of the royal family. The useless jackass Andrew being a prime example.
Let's be honest, apart the queen, the other members of the royal family have all come up short from time to time.

talking about security how much did the Uk spend on Assange, that was a total waste of money
I think they as a young family with children are doing the correct thing and getting to a country that has more scope for them, in their shoes i would do the same thing, all young families should think along the same lines, the Uk is not the place it once was.
Agree. The media have got their knives out for Megan and they won't stop until they have driven the couple out or destroyed the marriage. It looks like they are doing the only sensible thing for them and their son. Harry knows what it is like growing up with the paparazzi hounding them everyday and quite rightly wants to protect his wife and more importantly his son from that pressure.
As for the security issue, well that is out of his hands to some extent, it is down to the palace to come up with the most practical way to deal with that. In the future his father is funding him from the Duchy of Cornwall estate. Given time I imagine the security bill will fall as Harry and his family settle into a more normal life in Canada.
Megan may, or may not turn out to be the best thing to happen to Harry but that is for him to decide, not us on an expats website in Asia.

No and neither do you. I do know that many troubled youths were subjected to violence at home.

There is no point in trying to put rape and legalised prostitution in the same sentence. Miles apart in just about every respect.

Britain has the lowest inflation rate for the last three years putting pressure on the Bank of England to lower interest rates again. With Johnson's cavalier approach of keeping a possible no deal on the table makes the business community nervous and so the confidence level is still relatively low. In other words don't expect the pound to strengthen much over the next few months.

Lucky he lives in Thailand then, not much chance of encountering snow or ice. Probably why they don't include it in their "training".

About twelve years ago before moving from Chiang Mai a group of us looked at the viability of building and running a care home. On paper it was a really good earner and relatively easy to do. Nursing staff were a worry but one of our group was a German dentist who ran a successful operation in Bangkok so had a lot of experience with medical staff in Thailand. Financing wasn't a problem with the banks very keen to invest. I ended up leaving Thailand before the project got any further but it was definitely a missed opportunity.
However these days I am more likely to be a resident than an investor!

The man who committed that crime deserves to be shot, but giving police orders shoot to kill is wrong.
So any policeman who has a grievance against someone, shoots/ kills, then says ohh sorry i made a mistake, frightening thought.
Unfortunately it just illustrates the Thai authorities tendency to over react when stories get this sort of media coverage and public response.

I think it should be a straightforward choice of in or out for both of them. Harry can simply give up his title and not accept anymore from the royal purse. They can then simply live as Mr and Mrs Windsor, work and bring up their children like everyone else. Harry could even call himself Mr Hewitt if that works better for him.
It was never going to be an easy ride for Harry with his brother in direct line for the throne. The media will always be breathing down his neck waiting for any minor transgression. Megan just makes them chomp at the bit even harder.
Don't try and stay half in and half out Harry. That won't work. It didn't for Edward and his wife and won't for you. Better to make a new life for yourself and Megan away from all of this.

TAT have been targeting India for some time. Obvious really as after China they have the fastest growing economy in the world. But they are not alone with this strategy. Many countries are doing the same including the UK. It is just sound business sense.

She claimed that the bank was shutting up and advised her that seeing as it was Friday she should wait until Monday and then make a new card.
If that is true then the bank should have cancelled the card there and then, not leave it active over the weekend for someone else to use. It appears there are three parties guilty here. The card owner is stupid of gross stupidity for writing her ATM number on her card. The bank is guilty of negligence for not cancelling the card immediately they were told and the thief is guilty of stealing the money.

How else could you interpret it? That's exactly what it says.
Thailand is an intellectual wasteland of recent tree dwellers that cannot look at other countries that don't have 60 deaths per day and simply follow their lead. Their arrogance and loss of face will not allow it.
It's not that hard.
And yet so many of us ex-pats choose to live there. Funny that

They always like to blame something/someone else rather than the fact that the baht is way to high for a lot of to afford to come to Thailand for a holiday
Fair comment. The article appears to be Pattaya specific and as we know that has it's own attractions appealing more to single men than families. Wonder how it compares to Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and other more family friendly resorts.
I imagine tourism is down country wide but maybe for different reasons and not just the high value of the baht.

My understanding of the NHS, is that if you return to the United Kingdom, with intent to stay, that you are entitled to NHS again automatically.
I think that is correct. The thing is when I went/go for treatment, nobody ever asks me anything about my status. HOWEVER! I do have a GP and an address. I kept the GP when I was living abroad as well so that my may have made a difference.

Chiang Mai reels under impact of new coronavirus as tourists stay away
in Chiang Mai News

In 2008 I was living in Chiang Mai and had been for some years and we were coughing and spluttering then, when they were burning. In fact that is when quite a few people left because of the polluted air . I left a year or so later when it started to affect our son's health.
