  1. This August I will be married to my Thai wife for 27 years.

I will know her than for almost 28 years.

We met in an airplane and started corespondence.

After going through the ballot by the brothers and sisters to get permission to introduce myself to the parents and after getting their permission,my brother in law ( a lawyer) investigated all personal (economical) information.

In the meantime my wife speaks Dutch-German-English and Indonesian.

She is my partner.I am happy when she is happy and she is happy when I am happy.

Without her,I would never have achieved what I have achieved till now.

    Guess what I voted? :o

  2. Where do Germans-Dutch-Belgiums-luxembourgians(?) put there votes.

I am surely not a south west continental/neither UK nor Scandinavian.

    But I like the idea.

Some of our members give some information.

Specially when you post regularly and/or chat, I think it is preferable.

I used to check most of the new members during the last 2 weeks (the posters and the chatters),and I found 99% with NO information.

  3. A diplomat is not only a person representing a country.

The other meaning of the word is; clever negotiator

Another meaning for diplomacy is; discretion-delicacy :o

I am not working for the government and most probably would not fit into that world.

I keep my signature if you don't mind :D

  4. So, three weeks in 1991 makes you the expert :o

In Sumatra there is a civil war going on.The regular army fights against "islam " seperatists.Negative travel advise from all embassies world wide.

Don't glorify the Suharto period ( he embazzled USD 16 Bilj. for him and his family and crownies).Trying to change all that is a gigantic task and almost impossible, to my humble opinion.

Everywhere in the world nations are struggling. Tourist abduction in the Philipines and South America f.e.

My point is;If one goes to a third world country either for work or as a tourist, don't expect everything to be (almost) the same as at home.

I agree that there is a growing support for Islam. I n the begin 80's the Saoudies pumped milons of dollars into the country, only for Islamitic schools with fundamental teaching.

    This is the result!

However not everybody is as fanatic as you think.

  5. I must confess, that I am a regular visitor of the Thai Forum Chat room.

I talked to some nice folks and learned at the same time.

(I think we call ourselves the 50+,however we accept youngsters :o )

Let's be happy that this is not gonna be like Bangkok Chat.

    Give it time!

  6. After 5 years Indonesia , I will leave for retirement in Thailand by the end of this year.

I am almost sure that I will NEVER go back anymore.

These might be personal reasons and are subjective.

To advise completely negative is one step too far.

There are beautiful spots for visiting and sporting. To deal with the population is a matter of personal attitude.

When I read some ( many) of the comments in Thai Forum about Thai,I almost would not retire there ,if I would not known better!

It is a Kek country so one should know what to expect concerning certain issues.

However, 6 years is enough as stated above :o

  7. Ovenman,

    asean countries visa free

20 other countries visa on arrival

All the rest of the world (included 9 european countries) have to obtain the visa at the local embassy or consulat.

It will take at least 2 working days to have the visa ready and a higher tarif.

An issue in the local papers here is the 30 days restriction.

Many of the backpackers (surfers ) are planning a longer stay than the 30 days.

This group benefits esspecially the locals. They don't use fancy hotels and/or resorts but buy all their needs from the small shops as they are on low budget.

What the result will be at the end.

As Dr.PP already mentioned we still suffer from many other reasons why the tourists number has dropped.

  8. In a certain way I like your reaction Mac 39.

You are old enough to make your own (wise) decisions

Unfortunately you downgraded it a little bit yourself, by saying

"or can't you find and so on" :o

    Most I can support :D

  9. I got my Australian visa without leaving the house.Internet for 5 minutes and I could print at home. Valid for one yeat.Multiple.

Great country.Obviously trust my document without visual check or so.

I looked in my passport and it said valid for all countries of the world. However those damned visa rules and regulations per country !!

I agree with Dr.PP that this is a kind of pay back. The minister of foreign affairs was lately talking about those bloody Dutch colonials. The guy was not even born when this finished.Look at my history overview at terrorism thread.

    :o
