1. If you really want to know if there is any hope for Samui, just go up to the Santiburi Golf Club and take a look at the delightful view from there. Spoilt only by one thing! Look slightly left and you will see a monstrocity of a building clearly in breach of building height regulations by X2!

Your next move would be to make a few discreet enquiries as to who owns this project. When you find out, decide for yourself whether there is any hope.

The first person that has the balls to make someone actually pull down one of these buildings, rather than just "halt" construction will be the saviour of the Island on this particular issue anyway.

  2. read the report in the newspaper. His sister had admitted he had a drink.

As bad is this is allot of accidents can be avoided by the the drivers. Being a good driver is being aware of other bad drivers. achole slows down your reactions. I know samui has problems but are we as humans so un able to think for ourselves that we need laws to protect our selves.

This is not an attack on the victim and these words probably sound a bit harsh but for the rest of people that are still living breathing and relaxing and enjoying life. please rememeber that that few relaxing drinks could be your last.

problem with samui is people get too relaxed and do things they would not normally do. Throw in a 3rd world country no motor bike liscence no helmet a few beers then the answer is not hard to work out. like some one said before another day and another death. maybe people can learn from other peoples mistakes.

Maybe The victim was not drunk and has only 1 beer but for the amount of other people i see every night driving like a snake at 100 kms per hr. You had better watch and learn or it could be your bleeding releatives you are lying next to.

harsh words for a greatere cause

    R.I.P

Hope your bad luck can make others learn. Even though it was not your fault. Just imagine how many other people are too follow.

Thanks for opening our eyes to your amazing revelation that drinking and riding/driving do not go together.

Believe it or not your news is not new to us.

In this case the motorbike rider was blameless and I'm sure your harsh words will be no comfort whatsoever to the poor fellow's relatives and friends.

  3. A ride around the island will show you they are in the process of replacing the concrete poles hence the power outages.

It may explain it to you but not to me. Were they replacing the poles at 8.45 ish last night when it started pouring down with rain?

It also does not explain why its been happening when it rains heavily or there's a thunderstorm for the last 27 years to my knowledge!

  4. I have wondered for some time now, what dizzying depths of moronic stupidity and blinding incompetence you have to reach before you lose your job as the head of the electricity department in Samui!

The enormous loss in revenue to the government alone, would surely be more than enough to justify sending a team on a course somewhere that would teach them that rainfall/claps of thunder/flashes of lightning does not mean all the lights have to go out!

It doesn't in other places in the World, and they get enough practice at it here for goodness sake!

The cost to people of damaged electrical goods, food in fridges, accidents etc etc. would be enormous if it could be quantified.

    For God's sake educate yourselves!

  5. Hi Tuky,

In my humble opinion, Santiburi Resort is the nicest resort on the Island. Get yourself one of the beach side bungalows there mate and you will love it. They have a Spa there which is good though not the best on the Island by any means. Although it is in Maenam and some distance from the main shopping area in Chaweng, they will drop you off there and you can sit and have your beer or three while the wife shops till she drops etc. If you check them out, some of the rooms have a private jacuzzi type thing. Generally a top place and ideal for feeling pampered.

Hope you enjoy yourself wherever you decide to stay.

PS. For a short stay with your beloved family, do NOT hire yourself a motor bike. That would be your best chance of turning your trip into a nightmare.

  6. the biggest vehicle pays!

Crap, you try arguing with a cement truck driver.

My sincerest apologies! I can quite understand that with your obvious communication skills you might end up arguing with anybody.

Have a lovely Songkran and try and avoid as much contact with others as you can.

  7. Although I understand you being worried, the main thing is not to panic and do what many posters on here are suggesting you do, which would end you in a hel_l of a lot more trouble than you're in at the moment.

Did you hire the jeep with or without insurance? If without, not to wise. If with, go back to the hire place with documents and explain the situation with a diagram. See if they will fight your battle for you. You could also involve the tourist police in your visit if you want.

The point about not driving without a Thai driving licence or International driving permit is of course technically correct. However I suspect that all hire companies rent out to clients of whom 98% have no local licence. These will include people like Hertz and Avis so I suspect the hirers that include insurance may have some recognized exception to this rule.

In my experience, there is a bizarre rule regarding accidents on Samui and that is that no matter whose fault it is, the biggest vehicle pays! However politely stand your ground regarding the details of the incident. I did it once and ended up paying nothing. This however did seem a miracle at the time!

If you are going to get hit with a pay off, let the vehicle owner or the tourist police negotiate it down for you if possible. Then bite the bullet, pay, and try and enjoy the rest of your holiday. Making a run for it could really get you into trouble if caught.

    Regards.

  8. If this is a civil war, there are rules of warfare. At this time, the combatants are the Thai army and the red shirt insurgents still out there fighting. Lets stop the fiction that the red shirts were ever there for non-violence, once and for all. Any red shirt going out now is a combatant. Please send all the children and old people home. If they get hurt, it is the red's fault for putting them in a war zone. The tough ladies can stay if they choose. If the combatants are defined, it is a war. If the red shirts continue to play with ideas of blowing up trains of civilians, well they become war criminals/terrorists.

Can we assume that the last "mob" that hit the streets, closed down the airport and generally held the country to ransom have got their yellow shirts carefully hidden away in their drawers at home at the moment?

The yellows are irrelevant now and the yellows never declared war against the Kingdom of Thailand, and never made public terrorist threats on live tv.

They may not have declared war on Thailand but they certainly managed to damage it enormously. At the same time they managed to convince by example that the way to get anywhere was to hold the country to ransom and hit the streets and they were allowed to succeed in doing so with little or no retribution from weak Government.

The results of their example you see before you on the streets of Bangkok right now.

And by the way, before you think otherwise, I am on nobody's side but the side of reason!

  10. How surprising! Gecko and Co. find our silence almost as irritating as we find their noise!

Is that the same concerned from earlier in this thread? Lost for words? Come on you can do better than that....

NALAK becomes a senior super user if this thread hits 30,000 readers.. Wow.. 30,000 sleepless users

Why don't you see if you can get all the readers to wear red shirts and sit outside the gecko later?

Now really cocoloco! Surely you KNOW I can do a lot better than that! I just need a bigger challenge my dear fellow. I'm afraid crossing swords with you would be mere childsplay for me and therefore of no interest whatsoever. Ramble on alone without me little fellow. Farewell!

  11. The Reggae Pub was a small disco at Chaweng Beach Road somewhere opposite the now Chaweng Resort. The road in front was a sandy path. Behind it was a tense palm forest, nothing else. During nighttime it was completely dark around it. I was there about 23 years ago.

    Me too!

  12. Let's face it, this thread is now turning into one where people seem to be venting their ire about the fact that some people have the money to waste on 20,000 baht a night rooms etc. Whereas the fact is that loud sleep-robbing noise played all through the night offends huge amounts of people. It does not distinguish between rich or poor, Thai or farang, young or old. The poor Thai worker in their camps that have to work the next day, or children that have to get up for school are as equally affected as people trying to do business.

The rules are there regarding zoning and time restrictions, and these are supposed to be for the good of all, rich or poor, young or old and not just the people making money, out of making noise. The trouble is no authority in Samui is enforcing them because they are probably paid off by or related to the people making money out of it.

I think the only way forward may be complaints to central authorities in Bkk to see whether they can ask embarrassing questions of authorities down here as to why they are not doing their job properly.

The OP Starts already with is whinging about "the party"! It isn't turning into a thread where poeple seem to "vent their ire...." it has been opened as such!

Well, you write it "waste 20.000 Baht" a night on a hotel room... :)

there are plenty of LOCALS on this island serving these "wasteful people" who have to do this for less then a third of this amount for a whole month!

The trouble is hat some "high strung" people think they can buy the world with their money and deprive others of their rights to have fun without "wasting 20.000 a night for a hotel room!" -

Sila Evasion, Four Seasons, Le Meridian and many more are places far enough off limits from these possible venues that people "wasting 20.000 a night" won't feel "their freedom" of wasting money, for their perceived "comfort" is interfered with!

    - get real!

Please and honor the rights of people as you expect them to honor the "rights" of people "wasting 20.00 a night"!

...or do in your perception only people with the spending power of "wasting 20.00 a night", have"rights"...?

And your statement "...offends huge amounts of people..." can you back this with some figures, facts?

On these parties, have never ever met one who seemed "offended"..!

Try understanding a post instead of just reading it! Then you might be qualified to comment on it.

How do you know "Huge amounts of people" are offended? Do you think that if the local Thais Elite were offended, they wouldn't have done something about it by now. Thai on Thai. Easily sorted. bang, bang.... No. Poor Thais like going to Kareoake and all night markets. It's their country, for heavan's sake. They sleep midday to recharge their batteries.

The only people complaining about all this Thai lifestyle is people like you who want to make this island a dormatory wasteland where you can hear a pin drop at a 3 kilometre range. A bit like Worthing On Sea. Do you really think those in power in BKK care a fig about your concerns and " a good 8 hours sleep"?

    wot eva !

  15. Who actually owns Gecko?

Why don't you all go up there and have a drink... Nobody's stupid enough to make a nightclub there!

(though if you keep promoting it like one on here you may actually be attracting the wrong crowd!)

This is one of the most beautiful bar/restaurants on the island and will be surrounded by million dollar + villas (already sold)

Who would build a villa next to a nightclub..?????.

And this is to the poster that's got nothing better to do with his life than bore the pants off people with

this complete cock and bull story..

"Why don't you chill out dude.. because nobody has had or will have sleepless nights!!!"

It still amuses me greatly when I read one of the very early posts on this thread. Especially the bit that says " Nobody's stupid enough to make a nightclub there!"

Well we certainly now know who's stupid enough to make a night club there now don't we? In fact consider how stupid you would have to be to do it twice!

I think you will find Stussy, or whatever your name is that in fact the noisier it is on New Years, the more the locals will enjoy it because it will simply bring the demise of this place from a "law" point of view to an earlier demise and conclusion.

Regards and a Happy New Year!

  16. This thread, which I have been reading from Bangkok seemingly for years now, is hilarious. I feel so sorry for the poor bastards who've had to live next to this roller coaster thumping monstrosity. Imagine finding out that it's going to come back after all that's gone on! This should seriously be the plot of a Coen Brothers movie.

This is a good post to use as a jumping off point:

Expect all this nonsense will start all over again now......Try talking to each other this time!

I'm just some guy reading the thread, but you've posted this several times now and people have explained to you several times what happened when people did go and chat, yet you keep ignoring that and posting this. Still, that aside, what do you imagine the fundamental outcome of these chats to be? "Hey, your bar is in my neighborhood and plays loud music - can you change either of those things?" "No" "Okay, nice chat!"

Speaking completely objectively and without any interest in what goes on here the fundamental nature of the debate is irreconcilable. According to everyone involved and everyone around the place (at least after the lies at the beginning of the thread about it not being a club stopped), it's a DJ club that plays loud music until late - that's what it is. No amount of talking appears set to change that, so I imagine all talking is moot. It'd be like asking the red shirts and the yellow shirts to sit down and talk. "Hey, you gonna let Thaksin come back as Prime Minister?" "No" "Okay, nice chat!"

A just about perfect summary of why people found it pointless going to talk. Let's find out though what this next re-incarnation is going to be, before we judge it. It may be the quiet chilled out venue they promised the first time, and then we can all go and patronise it. However much I live in hope, I'm not holding my breath!
