  1. Just to let all you guys know the Book House is now open, we currently have a small selection of 2nd hand books, the new books will be arriving in a couple of weeks as the distributer is doing a stock take at the moment and if you are looking for a book in particular I will be happy to order it for you,

    regards

    Madyakka

Sorry but I wont be able to make it this year as I have just heard the mating cry of the Kiwi bird.

It says there is money here if you want to work for it.

Well I am game for that.

I am off to Auckland on Wednesday for 3,y6 or 12 months and if it is 12 months I will be back in January for a while to rrenew my visa (and see the family too).

I will still be in contact on TV and through Khonwan.

    Cheers all

    Bill

  2. I am at home here in Thailand and the thing I miss the most about the UK is the public library. Most countries I have worked I have been able to get books and read (except Angola) but up here in the central region I used to have to go to BKK. Now it seems as though there is a bookshop openinh in Nakhon Sawan and before it does I am off to New Zealand to work.

At least there are libraries there.

  3. Yesterday I downloaded the form tm8, filled it in and had no idea where to send it so I looked again today on this thread.

I found it on the main page of the Immigration website and the address to send it to is

For a re-entry permit,if you are in Bangkok area and you have an Internet access, you could fill in a TM. 8 form and send it to [email protected]

You should e-mail the completed form 1 day in advance.

You have to submit a 2" photo and pay a permit fee at counter 7, the Immigration Bureau (soi suanplu office.)

    Fee for re-entry permit:

    1,000 Bahts for single

    3,800 Bahts for multiple

I hope that helps anyone else

  4. Just a small note of caution regarding Garmin.

Unless the service policy has changed, should you Garmin require a new internal battery or it becomes faulty it will probably have to go to Taiwan (not Thailand) for a repair and service.

My Garmin GPS lll has an internal battery which tells me that it is flat and when I spoke to ESRI a couple of years ago they said that I needed to send it to them so that they could check the fault (it is obvious what the problem is) and then the would send it to Taiwan for repair and upgrade.

Is should run off the cigarette lighter connector. My 2610 Street Pilot doesn't even have any batteries. My hand held eTrex runs off two AA batteries.

I thought the older Garmin GPS III ran off AA batteries too.

It does run off AA batteries as you say BUT unfortunately any waypoints you store or anything that you put in will not survive as it is the internal memory battery which has failed.

I took the back cover off but there was no sign of a replaceable battery and as I rarely use it now I really cannot be bothered to send it to BKK and then onwards to Taiwan and back again.

The internal Battery failed in both my C320 and C510 after about 18 months.

It was fairly simple to find out which battery they used (both happen to be the same) and how to replace them using google.

After that a trip to Fortune to buy the battery (from memory B200) and then 30m mins of disassembly/soldering/reassembly and they were as good as new.

If your not confident of doing it yourself any half competent electrician should be able to do it for a minor fee.

    Cheers

    Ah

    I didnt know that.

I will take your advice and try it as I will be in BKK next week for a couple of days

    Thanks for the tip

  5. ALL FARANGS PLEASE READ!!

I'm an American who has read and heard about the Thai girls and to not buy anything unless consulting a lawyer and wait a while first, like a year or more. Well I took a girl out of the bar and out of a rat infested box near Din Daeng and built a Big house in Wangnoi (near Ayuthaya) and now we are divorced and she and her family are claiming that I did not pay for anything and that it belongs to them. To make matters worse, she got pregnant with a Thai guys baby and said it was mine.

I would ask for input in how to get the land and house back and would like to bulldoze/ destroy this house and would like to get the media involved as well as sponsors to help me to destroy this place as money is not an issue but I would like to make an example that we can all share of BAD Thai women that take advantage of us Farang. :o

Well, your syntax is very suspect for an American. The run-on sentences, and grammatical errors, make it sound as though English is your second language. You might just be an uneducated American, of course, but I'd bet you're not a native English speaker.

You are repeating the proverbial story about how your Thai bargirl ripped you off. And everyone buys it without any verification of any kind.

I am dubious about you, your story, and your intentions, apart from the obvious one of Thai bashing, in particular Thai bargirl bashing.

I trust Thai girls, including bargirls, far more than any farang I encounter in LOS, and far more than you, pal.

    you trust bar girls?

Actually so do I. I have known quite a few older bar girls who have married farangs and in around 80% of them the marriages are still going strong.

Not bad compared to some western countries.

Granted taht all bar girls are not the same but neither are farangs all good hearted nice kind people.

  6. Memorise all of these, there will be a test next week.

  7. My boss (Wife's) is on the phone talking to her Mum about a new type of Fertliser in Thailand. It's called 'Buu Dang' (Red crab). The company name is Best 59. Apparently it is an organic fertiliser which used to be available only in liquid form making it not very popular with farmers. It is now available in granular form. It sells via agents in different parts of Thailand and the price is fixed at 700 baht per 50kg bag. I'm told it's made from Prawn shells.

Wife keen to become an agent selling the stuff.

Any views, insights, comments or God forbid cynical remarks most welcome. :o

May I humbly suggest that your boss's wife rather sell cowdung as the availability

and cost far outweigh the advantages of the MumboMumbo fertilizer you describe.

As far as I know cowdung is a good fertiliser (and if I am wrong I am sure that KhonWan will correct me), however I think that you need about 1 ton per rai. Now on 50 rai you will need 50 tons and trying to buy that much locally will be a problem and as for the spreading of the stuff you would probably have to use labour which in turns costs money which in turn costs.........

One man can spread fertiliser on 1 rai more easily and cheaply than cowdung unfortunately.

  9. Horrible situation- you're damned if you do anf damned if you don't.

Hands up on the board who ever even had to tell a close friend about these situations. You are not always greeted in the spirit that you have told even with good friends.

On the other hand can you stand by and watch someone flush their financial and emotional well-being down the toilet?

Self-preservation though should be your number one worry, and you do sound very close to your own doorstep. I advise against doing anything that is going to rebound on you from any source.

I hope it works out OK for you.

Based on experience of having faced a similar situation or predicament with a friend in UK married to a thai lady. The guy may well not belive what he is told and stick his head in the sand like an ostrich and the lady in question will convince him that you lied and should not be spoken to again. Better to keep out of it and resist all urge to let him know. If he is gullible enough not to see the signs himself then let him loose the money.

We thought we were doing someone a good turn letting a nice guy know what his wife was upto no good and the whole thing was turned inside out, upside down until we were the guilty parties. In these instances better to be a spectator.

Speaking from personal experience in Thailand I DID tell my friend what was going on and yes while I did not have 100% proof my wife and a lot of other people did know.

I told him and there was an instant stoppage of money coming in to the wife which eased after a while. He came out 4 months later and talked to his wife who told him the whole story (her version) and whilst he was there for a month he only spoke to me 2 or 3 times and believed her as he didnt want to get confused. We have spoken a couple of times since in a civilised fashion but that is about all. More than 10 years of friendship down the tubes and for what?

I stood to gain nothing by telling him and I lost his friendship.

My loss but perhaps if she does it again (and she probably will) I will not tell him anything and perhaps he will learn the hard way.

  10. You'll have no problem finding rental accommodation for that period. Trademe.co.nz is your best bet for finding rental accommodation. There are a number of inner city 'budget' accommodation options where you get a small room and shared access to kitchen/bathroom for about $150 pw with no long term contract. Living in Auckland is no more expensive than in other western countries. I wish you a pleasant stay.

    Thanks for the info guys.

    The office is at

    Eden Terrace

    Symonds Street

    in Auckland.

The websites I have seen so far are lovely places at around $130 a day and I had hoped for something a little cheaper.

I do get a company car so that should make travelling a bit easier.

I have to confess a little ignorance as though I have worked in many countries over the years I have never been to NZ and have no idea if Auckland is on the North or South island.

I only found out about the job on Wednesday lunchtime and signed up yesterday morning. It is for a 3 to 6 month with possibility of an extension and I am looking forward to it even though I will be leaving my family here.

    Cheers

  11. Anyone info on where to buy local lamb etc?

Around NS or P'Lok would be handy.

I know that in NS at Makro it is easy to buy frozen Australian lamb but that it the only place I have seen it.

I also cannot remember any sheep farms around the central region.

    Sorry

  12. As I only upgraded to SP3 a couple od days ago I am not sure about progressing to Vista.

    Is it a free upgrade?

    Does it work?

Most important, is it worth it?

There is never a free upgrade from one OS to a new onw, even from the same developer! :D Ans Apple isn't better as MS in this ways! :D

    Cheers.

  13. "There are two figures in there that call for some simple arithmetic:

    (1) It takes 6.5kg of fresh roots to produce 1L of ethanol.

    (2) If all petrol cars were to switch to E85 (which they will eventually have to do if oil prices continue to go up), then 17 millions liter of ethanol would be needed per day."

I have read elsewhere that it takes 5 to 5.4 kilograms of cassava for one litre of ethanol, that's about 20% less than the above figures. As far as increasing the amount of cassava grown, there is a new method of growing it now, that is suppose to get a yield of up to 30 tonnes per rai, compared to the present 3 to 5 tonnes, that means that if everybody went to that method, without increasing the land used for cassava growth there would be still lots of surplus cassava that maybe could be used to make ethanol to ship to the States. Issangeorge

I am hoping to start growing more cassava next year if my 5 year plan comes off.

    This year, get a job.

    Start in NZ this month.

Year 2 buy 80 rai more land and plant

Year 3 harvest and re invest

    Year 4 as year 3

Year 5 as year 4 but buy a tractor

Mind this was last years 5 year plan and it crashed at year 1 but this year at least I am off to a start

    :o:D :D

The other thing is I personally don't think that Thais will convert all the petrol cars to E85 as most of them will not be able to afford it and the car manufacturers will not make kits for cars over a few years old anyway.

  14. I need a little help from any Kiwis from Auckland as I am off there this month on a 3 to 6 month contract.

I need to know the cost of living and possibly any reasonable self catering places as I will have to live there and I don't want to stay in hotels for too long.

    Cheers

  15. I finally managed to download SP 3 but I still couldnt find it on the official site until I downloaded yet another MS program first.

After about an hours downloading using EDGE my PC crashed so I rebooted it and re downloaded the program. It took about 1 1/2 hours but now it is in and running and so far I have seen no difference.

On the other hand since I installed it the program has not crashed either.

Now how long should I wait until Vista is ...................

I'm going to wait for Vista service pack 2 before I give up XP Pro. I put up with a thousand updates and three service packs. Now that XP Pro is working great, I can see no reason to change.

That seems like a fair plan. I think I will do the same but I did find another thread about vista this morning which didn't tell me that much.

Sorry it was actually this one.

  16. Hi Sceadugenga,

normally eat about 7pm, as you can see, we have the usual condiments, although i would prefer Sarsons malt vinigar,,,

    Bild766,

Namsom is 100ks NW of Udon Thani, 40k south of Mekong,

Mushy peas, mm, not sure how to do this, do you boil peas more or less into oblivion, then stir in mint sauce?

Thanks for your comments, Cheers, Lickey..

    Hi Lickey

Sadly I am on the other side of the country to you 65km southwest of Khampaeng Phet and it is a tad to far to drop in for lunch on my scooter.

As for the minty mushy peas I used get then from the chippie or out of the tin.

  18. However to be fair she ONLY smokes outside and does her best to keep the smoke away from our 4 year old son. In the car she does ask him first and she does open the window.

This made me laugh. You say he is 4 years old. Why does she ask a 4 year old if she can or not?

Because she realises that it is his life and if he says no then she will wait until we have a break and then go out and smoke. Unfortunately we don't live in the car all the time or she would probably jump out.

As an aside I was flying back from Angola a rew years ago and we had a stop over in another country. We had to stay on board and one guy was out on the steps for as long as possible puffing away.

Have you never looked in the smokers rooms at the airports? I feel sorry for the people in there.

  19. At 64, a bit fat, semi-retired and living in the sticks I wear baggy cargo shorts to keep me cool, loud flowery shirts when I need to wear a shirt and sandals that I buy from Lotus Tesco.

Up here nobody has commented that I know of and when I am in Bangkok in the daytime I wear the same with trousers instead of shorts in the evenings.

If I go to immigration or places where long trusers are appropriate then I wear them.

At my time of life I do not have a dress code nor do I particularly care what other farangs may say or think about the way I dress.

If you don't like what I wear then close your eyes and pass me by. I promise not to shed a tear if I offend you nor will I comment about you.

I have to admit I did get on the Skytrain at On Nut once to get to the Nana BTS and the sweat was literally rolling of me, but that was because the car had broken down outside Tesco and I had to push it around the corner and leave it to be collected as I was on my way to get a flight ticket and the place was closing soon. The only Thai person who helped my was a street vendor who would not accept anything for his help.

When I got back to the car and collected my stuff I went to my friends bar and had a shower and got changed there and flew out later that evening.
