Obvious there might be other reasons which also play a role why the coups happened. But for the last two coups the criminal Shinawatras were the main reason and the people on the streets were happy that finally the military stopped the criminals. I am sure the people would not have accepted the last coups without a good reason.
There was a good reason, a very good reason, they had a gun pointed at their head!

And IF (a big 'if') what you predict above, my friend, comes to pass, neither side of the army in internecine conflict will be fighting for the ordinary Thai people and for genuine democracy.
You mark my words!
Indeed, and the ordinary Thai people know it - that is why they are keeping out of the way!

Especially after the Army's recent $80 million purchase of 37 Stryker armored cars from the United States.
Hmm, one battalions worth? I wonder just where that battalion is based, and just where it's loyalties lie!
If you look at the recent purchases, they will equip a small but powerful force, enough to stand against a large, ill trained and poorly equiped ( Vietnam era) conscript army...

Be nice to see what the junta fans on here have to say in response. The usual twaddle I should imagine.
As they sing on the football terraces: " it's all gone quiet over there, it's all gone quiet over there."

The fallout from this is going to be epic. When does the war start?
When the gloves come off in the "rivalry" between factions in the military. That will be a fight to the death

I've always found them most helpful.
Mind you, I think the youngish chap with spectacles is a fake - he is the only man in Thailand I have ever seen wearing a uniform without para wings!

I have just watched the interview with Nigel Farage conducted by Andrew Marr. Marr is usually a reasonably fair interviewer, who allows his guests to make their point. On this occasion, he looked uncomfortable, was armed with a clipboard full of frankly irrelevant quotes, and rather blustered to justify his attempts to divert Farage from the central topic - the forthcoming European Elections and Brexit.
It definitely seemed to be a BBC attempt to stitch him up, which went rather badly wrong. Farage ran rings around him.

But they could have a seat in government by joining PT and FF, in fact they could get more Grade A ministries than if with PPRP.
2) even if The Democrat Party does follow his suggestion, it will only lead to another round of "counting" and the Junta emerging as winners...

Perhaps I could urge caution when it comes to declaring on which side the Finns know to fight - given their somewhat enthusiastic and misguided participation with the Germans in the last major round of European fighting?

Well, we have had a simple majority in a binary question (yes or no) referendum.
We have had a general election, using the "first past the post "system, in which both the two biggest parties stood on manifestoes to leave the EU.
This general election, we are told, produced a representative democracy, which passed an act of parliament, by a thumping majority, confirming that we would leave the EU.
Now we are about to have an election, using proportional representation, which rather looks as if it is going to confirm the electorates wish to leave the EU.
Perhaps it is time to change the question...

Abhisit's nephew, Parit Wacharasindhu, makes a valid point when he says the Democrat supporters who support Prayuth voted for PPRP in the election, abandoning the party. Those that did vote for the party wanted the party to take an independent position, an independent opposition party, opposed to the junta. if the party is to become relevant to the young it must realize the extent of Thai youth's opposition to the junta, as seen by FF's success.
if the Democrats refuse to join PPRP then the chances of the junts'a ex ministers forming a government are very slim indeed.
Yes, it is a very good point. However: 1] those who call the shots in The Democrat Party will not be able to resist the opportunity of a seat in government, 2) even if The Democrat Party does follow his suggestion, it will only lead to another round of "counting" and the Junta emerging as winners...

By UK definition a minibus has passenger seats and windows, a van only has seats & windows at front and steel panels instead of windows on the sides with the interior empty for the carriage of goods.
Hmh, but here in Thailand the term "van" refers to what in the UK would be called a "minibus" - here the "minibus" they propose to use are actually small buses as opposed to vans...
I hope that makes it clear!????

The first/warming up moves in what is going to be a very messy faction fight, I suspect.

We spent about 4200 baht for our 3 kids not including shoes backpacks and jackets for the rain. My youngest sons school gave my wife 300 baht credit back once she showed them the recipts at the school he goes too older 2 kids are in private international academies and no such rebate was offered or even talked about.
The way it works is that the Government pays out that B300, no matter whether or not the school is private or government. The money is allocated depending on the number of children enrolled at the school. Your youngest's school was doing what they are supposed to do. I would suggest that private international academies (or persons on their staff) have kept the money - probably reasoning that, given the fees that they charge, the parents really won't be fussed over a lost refund of B300. Perhaps you should form up (with some other parents) and all ask for it - if nothing else it will embarrass the corrupt ones, always fun!

Colin, not all School Directors profiteer from the Children at their school - and your wife is obviously one who does not. The school at which I teach is run by nuns, and the Director and Principal (both nuns) likewise do not profit or allow others to. But, I live next door to a Government school (P1-6 and M1 - 3) and the staff there most certainly do. A friend whose brother is the director of a large secondary school near Bangkok tells me that the first weeks of the new academic year is a "second salary" for him.

I believe there is some form of household subsidy in place for school attendees.
Last year we kept all the receipts for Little Miss JAG's school uniforms: two sets of white blouse/blue skirt, one Girl Guide uniform, one PT uniform, Friday traditional dress, shoes, PT shoes, regulation schoolbag and windcheater jacket. The whole caboodle was well over B2000. At the end of May we were refunded some B300.
I was so overwhelmed with gratitude that I had to lay down in a darkened room for some time...

The good to come of the situation is that the "swing" parties that join the junta's coalition will not be believed next election. One suspects the Democrats will cease to exist and the other anti-democracy sell-outs will return diminished. The benefit of being in opposition is that the public do not hold you accountable for anything. Future Forward and Pheu Thai will surge beyond levels that even the corrupted EC cannot nullify. Give it at most 12-18 months. In the meantime, let us all enjoy watching Prayuth flounder without Section 44, military courts and attitude adjustment camps
If (when) Prayuts regime falters, there will be a coup, and the whole miserable circus will be reset. The next junta leader is waiting (very visibly) in the wings...

Business as usual, no need to change anything - well, perhaps some more drill exercises at the halt, and a couple more patriotic ballads, just to set the tone for where we are going...

I think that one is inevitable, because the lower house has been rendered impotent (or perhaps one could say irrelevant) by the EC managing to arrange that the party which actually lost the election becomes the party in government. This in turns means that the appointed Senate will be needed to ensure that the government can get it's legislation through.
There are two factions in the military, one (the current junta) controls the Senate, the other faction will only put up for that for so (not very) long.
And that hastens the bloody endgame.
And for those of you who wonder why the Thais put up with it, may I suggest that they realise how it is going to end up, (lots and lots of killing) don't want to play any part in it, and will stay clear.
I'm glad that my Stepson has completed his national service...
