  2. I generated my nick during the days of USENET, specifically S.C.T. (social.culture.thai) inaugurated 1991, which was about 25+ years ago. Just noticed I spelled it as TyWais then. A play on words as it could be pronounced Thai Wise or Thai Wais or Thai Ways. biggrin.png Left S.C.T. during the beginning of the flame wars and my nick came with me to Thaivisa in February 2003.

    My avatar is in memorial to our beloved GR. Kept it as it is a more serene, approachable and non-aggressive avatar.

  3. I know they check your tax situation for an extension of stay/new WP.

    That also hasn't been a requirement for the last few years for either labor or immigration. At least not in Chiang Mai and believe it is the norm in most offices in Thailand not to require it. But as johnatong states, go to the revenue department office covering your area with your tax id card. You do have one? Bring your pay receipts also and cross check them for tax deduction.

  4. It's one thing to have the taxes deducted from your salary by your employer. It's another thing to have that employer take those deducted taxes and pay them. I know a guy who him and his colleagues were working for a school through an agency and upon completion of their contract two of them were leaving Thailand and got told by immigration at the airport they they couldn't leave until they paid their taxes. They paid their taxes and then were allowed to leave. At least that is the story he gave. I can't say how reliable his story is but that's what he said.

    When was this alleged to have occurred ?

    Months or years ago ?

    Many years ago, I would guess at least 20+, there was a requirement to present a tax clearance certificate but was abolished even though several sites, including the Revenue Department, says otherwise.

    Don't know why so many places still have out dated info like below. http://www.asia-excellent.com/publication_detail.php?id=11

    Foreigners who are leaving Thailand are required to submit an application for a Tax Clearance Certificate and supporting documents if:

    • They are required to pay taxes under normal circumstances or past tax liabilities are due before they leave Thailand;
    • They are required to file a tax return and pay tax on behalf of a company or juristic partnership incorporated under foreign laws which has been carrying on business in Thailand;
    • They have taxable income, whether paid in Thailand or not, from being a public performer in Thailand.
  5. Just had 5 minutes of drizzle in Mae Rim. I'll take it!

    Just started sprinkling here at CMU also. And it stopped, about 5 minutes also.

  6. going on for hundreds of years.

    That's a common misconception because actually it's new in our generation. Traditionally Thailand grew organic because that's all there was. What used to be reused to nourish the soil is now called "agricultural waste" and burned in this era of chemical and poison farming. I ran across someone who has been in Northern Thailand since the 70's which was the time before farming methods changed. He described burning back then as seldom and the air as clean. Compare that to today where maybe 8 months out of the year the north is blanketed in heavy smoke pollution that is harmful to the entire population there. It's the same/worse every year. Nothing will be done about this in our lifetime.They give a little lip service to pass the time, blame others, and wait for the rains to start--works like a charm every time so why do anything? They already have the perfect solution in place.

    As far as what you can do, leaving is probably the best thing for your health. Otherwise make an artificial atmosphere in your house with windows and doors always closed, AC always on, and high quality air filters running. Stay inside during the dangerous 8 months of the year. When outside always wear a face mask like the government warns residents to do. I sometimes wonder if the lungs of people in the north are worse than heavy chain smokers.

    "8 months out of the year the north is blanketed in heavy smoke pollution that is harmful to the entire population there".

    Rubbish nonesence and diatribe! I live North of Chiang Mai, I've lived in the province for almost 12 years,. Burning and pollution is bad for about six weeks from February through mid April, that's all.

    The 8 months you quote is typical of somebody who has never even visited here for more than two weeks at a time, let alone lived here!

    I'm guessing a typo and meant weeks rather than months otherwise it doesn't make sense.

  7. Today I received a 4 page letter from the university. The cover page was from the main university office and distributed to all department heads and secretaries. They then supplied copies to each expat workers. It was also to inform departments to keep watch out for those working without work permits and/or on overstay. The other pages, one in English, went over the new rule and penalties.

  8. Can't speak for Chiang Mai but I have mailed a 90 day on a Saturday morning by EMS in the past and it has been received at the Imm office the following Monday morning. 15 days for an EMS letter is fantasy if it is going by road.

    EMS to CM immigration takes no more than one day. My most recent one sent in the morning and tracking shows it arrived in the afternoon. However it took 9 days for them to process and return it. Members are showing delayed delivery for a while now. This form is supplied now with the return receipt. It is simply a copy/paste from the Bangkok Immigration website.
