  1. After reading this thread I went to the local UOB ATM and withdrew 1000 baht using my RBS cirrus card. This is the card that I regularly use to withdraw money in Thailand. I hadn't used it for about two weeks and was due to withdraw 20,000 tomorrow but thought I had better check in case I had a similar problem.

It dispensed the money and as is normal with UOB did not charge me the 150 baht fee (one of the only banks left that is not charging)

So, at the moment it seems RBS is working ok.

  2. I am considering buying a second hand bike probably either a honda phantom or a honda silver wing or similar depending what is available in my budget. I have been told by a friend that if I buy a second hand bike I will not be able to get first class insurance for it.

It is imperative that I would be able to have it insured for theft or accident damage, if not I am going to have to reconsider and buy a new bike which I believe can be insured fully comp for the first three years.

Can anyone please advise me further on this matter?

  3. My situation is similar to Nutcrackers but possibly a little more awkward, my husband has an extension of stay based on retirement and I have an extension as his dependant. Does anyone know if it is possible for me to obtain a work permit with my current visa status as I am not actually the one who is retired (I am not over 50)

If not would I be able to obtain a multi entry non imm o from a nearby consulate on the basis of being married to a retiree, (I read earlier in this thread that a work permit can be issued on a non o visa) I don't really want to get a non b visa because if I decide to stop working I would have further visa problems.

  4. I'm glad someone raised this topic as it's something that crops up very often in conversation, people ask why we have been married for 10 years and not had kids, answer I don't want kids. Then I get really strange looks and most people ask why are you married if you don't want kids (particularly thai ladies can't understand this)

I want to party forever not change nappies, or make sacrifices for a child, I truthfully cannot understand why anyone would want children, to me they are just a burden.

I really hope my views don't offend anyone because that is not my intention, I am just telling it how I see it.

  5. You didn't make it clear who you're talking to, but if it's me, you're sadly mistaken.

Maybe you're one of those sad people who live in Asia because you can't afford a life back at home. Maybe you're a person who eats off food carts to save money?

As usual there is always one person who has to spoil things and surprise surprise it is you Tropo.

Many people have found this thread useful and informative but you have to start insulting people as with most other threads you contribute to.

As JR Texas rightly said all these dentists are trained to the same standard and in even in the back of beyond I have never come across a doctor or a dentist who doesn't speak English to a reasonable level. Thats like saying private Doctors in the UK are better than the Doctors that work for the national health, same same but one is more expensive! Up to you as the thais would say.

  6. I thought that was normal in Thailand, last year I had my six front teeth rebuilt without anesthetic.

The way it was explained to me is that an anesthetic is only required if the dentist will touch the nerve of the tooth but in Europe they give them as standard to bump up the cost - surprise surprise.

To be honest if a friend hadn't warned me first I would have probably been really shocked and demanded anaesthetic, the work I had done didn't hurt but it was a bit strange actually feeling them drilling and poking around.

  7. What I would like to know is why farangs who don't want to pay overrated prices are called 'cheap charlies'

Not all farangs who live in Thailand have a lot of money, some work here on low wages and some are here because they can have a better standard of living in Thailand than they could in their own country with the income that they have.

Thanks for the info about Banglamung hospital and I will also be going there next time I need work doing.

  8. I agree nobody should assume anything as every application is different. Maybe the best idea would be for the op to take advice from a qualified advisor ie

Thaivisaexpress or DaviesKhan as this seems to be a grey area and everyone has had different experiences although the quote from 7by7 explains things quite clearly.

NigelandJan, unless there has been some rule change that I am not aware of, a spouse goes to the UK on a 2 year settlement visa and at the end of that 2 years they apply for ILR, or FLR if they don't qualify for ILR.

I helped a friend submit their application for ILR at the beginning of the year and it was a very straight forward process, sent it all off by post and received the passport back with ILR stamped in it six weeks later, no further questions asked.

Just to clarify the people I have discussed in my posts have no savings just a weekly or monthly income which is enough to cover their living expenses.

I am by no means saying that they have found things easy and indeed they may have struggled to get the cash together for their applications but the op should not be put off bringing his spouse to the UK just because he doesn't have pots full of money.

  9. I am not an expert but a guy I know received a settlement visa for his wife last year and the only income he has is pension credit of around £120 per week. He claims housing benefit and council tax benefit and had enough in savings for the visa application and her flight to the UK.

They have not reached the stage of applying for ILR yet but I would assume that the financial criteria would be similar to that of obtaining a settlement visa in the first place.

  10. I have always found Pattaya very helpful and efficient but according to the new rules I am supposed to use Sriracha.

Sriracha seem to be ok if it is something straightforward like a 90 day report or change of address report, I haven't done an extension of stay there yet.

But when I got my certificate of residence to renew my drivers licence it was a really long winded process, first of all they didn't know which form I had to fill in, then they said I had to get a letter from the land transport dept stating why they required a certificate of residence (Pattaya do not require this).

When all that was done they then told me to come back in three days to collect the certificate. Personally I would rather pay 200 baht at Pattaya (free at Sriracha) and get the certificate the same day, in fact when my motorbike licence needs renewing next month I am going to try going to Pattaya and see if they will process it or if they send me away, will post the results here.

  11. Right, thanks again everyone I am going to try and find a dlink rep and see if they can fix it, I am in Sriracha so if anyone knows of one in the area or even in Pattaya would you please let me know. I will take a tour of my local tukcom this afternoon and see what I can find.

  12. Thank you to all those who have posted helpful replies.

I am not being cheap I just don't see the point in buying a new modem if this one can be repaired.

I had already checked the manufacturers handbook before I posted and found nothing relevant to my problem, so NanLaew there is really no need for sarcastic comments.

  13. Hi, I recently moved house so TTNT gave me a new username and password when they swapped my maxnet from the old house to here. But being a bit thick :) I went into the modem setup and instead of putting the modems username and password in first I kept putting the TTNT one in. Now the modem has locked up and won't work, I took it to Tukcom but the guy I spoke to can't do anything with it,

Does anyone know how to fix it before I go and buy a new one? Surely it can't be completely buggared just by putting the wrong details in??

Also I cannot take it back to where I bought it because I got it from TOT about 2 years ago and I no longer have a TOT connection.

  14. This discussion brings to mind a programme I watched a couple of years ago back in the UK. A little girl (maybe 9 or 10 years old) was sent to walk down the high street of a busy town, closely supervised by hidden crew members. Just to see how many people would approach her to see if she was ok. During the space of about 45 minutes only one lady approached her to try and help. When people who had obviously noticed her and done nothing were later interviewed both men and women but particularly men said that they were afraid to approach to try and help incase people thought they were perverts!

This in my view is what is unacceptable, people being made to feel that they cannot help a child that appears to be lost and distressed all due to the paranoid, bigoted opinions of the west!

  15. When I did my renewal in February they did not ask for any proof of residence. The only 'extra' thing that they ask for is if you are using the income method they still want a letter from your bank confirming your balance, doesn't matter how much your balance is if you are over the 65k per month. My bank balance was only 2.000 baht, I think they just want to see that you have a Thai bank account. When you do your 90 day report they want to see proof of residence but not for your extension. Thats the way it was for me anyway. Hope this helps.

  16. First of all I called 1103 and they told me I needed to go into the office. I went to a local office who were completely unhelpful. A thai friend has just told me that this office has a bad reputation and to go to the main office in the town so I will give this a try. When I first got ADSL reps came out to my house offering the service so I didn't actually deal with an office.

  17. Hi, I am moving house next week and I currently have 2mb ADSL with TTNT. I am moving a very short distance (only 2 sois) but TTNT are being very awkward about moving my internet connection. My 12 month contract finishes in June and at first they said I couldn't cancel my contract until then. I explained to them I don't want to cancel my contract I just want you to take the line out of my old house and transfer in to my new house, but they just don't seem to be getting it.

Has anyone had any similar experiences? The other option I am thinking of is to make a new contract for the new house and pay the extra for the next two months but I don't see why I should have to do this. Does anyone have any ideas??

  18. Has anybody successfully renewed an extension at their usual immigration office (if it is not the one they are now supposed to be using)

I did but it was only two days after the new rules were introduced.

I'm just wondering if you don't ask any questions just go in with all your paperwork whether they will actually turn you away.

My last extension was done so quickly I don't even think the officer looked at the address on the paperwork.
