  1. Since when have non-Thai Seniors been able to receive a 50% discount on the BTS? It used to be only available to Thais, although available to everyone on the MRT.
  2. I am unable to open some, only some, jpg images in a number of folders. There is no preview in the icons and if I click on the icon I get a black screen for a number of seconds before I am able to esc. Right clicking Properties/Security tells me I have to have Read permissions to view the properties. I've also been to C:/Users, right click on Properties, and in the list of Permissions for Administrators all boxes are ticked Allow except for the last one, Special Permissions which I am unable to tick. Below that box is 'For special permissions or advanced settings click Advanced', and that window then shows I have full control. Obviously I do not. There seems to no logic for this, as dates of the images are not after a particular date and I can view over 95% of my many images. I've tried Explorer and Faststone Image Viewer to Open. A Google search hasn't helped, but AseanNow readers are a clever bunch so I've come to you for advice. I'm using Win 11 BETA - official and not a pirated version - but had the same problem with Win 10.
  3. As I said, that is something my Thai wife told me, and I'd suggest that she knows Thais and the way they think better than you. I'm now ending this pointless conversation. Going through the thread, I don't think anyone has agreed with you. That might tell you something.
  4. I don't deal with hypotheticals and I've had enough of this nonsense. English is used as the international language and is the most widely spoken in the world, as your own link said. I have no idea why you keep on about this. I'm guessing you might be American, as I've noticed several other Americans on here who keep on and on digging a hole for themselves. I have no idea why.
  5. That is what my wife told me when I queried it with her. She's Thai, so I doubt that she - not I - is taking a cheap shot at Thais. I believe she understands Thais and Thai culture and the Thai way of thinking. But thank you for calling her naïve. I'll pass it on, although I doubt that she'll agree with your opinion. University educated, qualified English teacher and all. And I repeat - English is the international language used by many from different nations to communicate with each other. On a bus or anywhere else. From your link: English is the most-spoken language in the world, and it can be found spread far and wide. While there’s no official lingua franca for the planet, English is often used to communicate across nations. Communicate across nations = international language. What language would you use, if not English?
  6. Source? What language would you say is used when, for example, a German and and Italian need to work together? Or a Spaniard and a Swiss? Or a Swede and a Russian? Or my Thai wife with me? Or her sister married to a Dutchman? Hmm? Chinese perhaps?
  7. Also a load of nonsense. Passengers generally have no idea who is going to sit next to them when they buy a ticket. If people don't talk to you, it's either they have nothing to say or they don't like the look of you. Personally, I'm happy when they don't talk to me as I really can't listen to "You like spicy food mai" or "Thai food aroi". Just repeating what my wife told me when I asked her about it. She might know a little more about the culture than you. Possibly. And she and I know that not every bus requires you to sit in an assigned seat. Try asking for an assigned seat on the number 11 bus in Bangkok. As to your final paragraph, me too. Or they want to practice their six words of Engrish with you ????. Of course, if it was a she and she was a looker, well, I'd make an exception ????
  8. And led from the top, so suggesting that if the government can do it then so can everyone else. Great example set.
  9. If you had seven cops there who were clearly guilty of murder and who told you that he died of a drug overdose, understand, or else, you'd sign whatever they told you to sign.
  10. Based on the fact that he knew he would die if he didn't cough up the two million baht that was demanded. His fault. If he had paid up he'd be alive now. (for the hard of understanding, I'm just applying Thai, not Western, logic)
  11. Common in Thailand, where the locals are terrified that you might start to talk with them in English if they sit next to you and they'll lose face by not understanding the universal language..
  12. Possibly the crowd who claimed a cure for cancer a few years back? Different university. I wonder why it never caught on. So, now Thailand has invented a mouthwash made from rice that can kill Covid. One way of increasing the fading rice export market, I suppose. I love this country. Where else could come up with this stuff?
  13. And how many others have been given the Pfizer vaccine, all of whom survived?
  14. What this underlines is that, even with these partial lifting of restrictions, Thailand in general and Bangkok in particular will remain off the must-go-to list for tourists, Even when Thailand is removed from the red zone, which might be months away. In many, many countries the citizens there have just spent a year enduring dining and social restrictions. They most certainly will not, while their countries are now opening up to normality, come to a country to suffer Groundhog Day, with screens between diners in restaurants and 8pm closing.
  15. Perhaps foreigners are not used to the Thai way of drinking wine out of coffee cups while hoping Plod doesn't come up behind them to check what they're drinking. They do not indulge in out-of-the-box thinking, nor do they need to if they holiday elsewhere. Anywhere else, probably. Perhaps foreigners are used to going out on their holiday for a relaxed meal with a bottle on the table without having to worry about the consequences. The fact that they can't is Thailand's problem, because those tourists, those guests, will go home and spread the word about how Thailand is more restrictive with alcohol than some Muslim countries.
  16. Nothing new. Thailand has an obsession with making simple things difficult. I'm not sure why, and it isn't just the government. Here's a personal example: I wanted to re-order some cashew nuts from a place we got some before. My wife couldn't find their Facebook page so I asked her to get their name from a cousin who had originally suggested them to us. She didn't get their name. Instead, the cousin said she would order and pay and we'd pay her when we next saw her. She forgot to order. When we followed up a few days later she then made the order. So something that should have taken a couple of days had taken a week, we still had no nuts and we still didn't have the name of the company. And that is how Thailand works.
  17. I've long wondered about businesses that operate on razor thin margins. Restaurants, airlines too. Why would you want to invest in a restaurant business where profits are marginal at best for most? Why? And so many airlines go bust as they rely largely on mass economy travel (low cost airlines) or high-paying business and first class passengers (regular airlines) to make a profit. Trying to make those numbers isn't easy even in the best of times. If there are razor thin margins involved then why not charge realistic prices so each day doesn't bring you out in a nervous sweat. But then, I'm not an economist so I don't understand why businesses don't charge a sustainable price but instead operate on a could-go-broke tomorrow basis.
  18. Since when was it negative to comment on the facts? Most of us do not wear rose-coloured glasses. Seconded. Thailand has only 10% of the population fully vaccinated, and is 118th or 120th out of 120 countries (the position depends which report you read) in preparations made for recovery. Thousands of businesses have been destroyed and many are living on the street or in derelict buildings. A YouTube video of Pattaya was posted on this site yesterday. What is there to be positive about, but enjoy your flight.
  19. As an aside, I was not notified of any replies to my thread except the first one and I was about to post in another and more-read section. So apologies for any late responses I have made. AseanNow appears to be selective about if it notifies you or not. Not something I've been aware of before - but then I wouldn't be, would I, unless I revisited the post as I did with this one.
