When someone attacks you you have the right to defend yourself and you have the right to eliminate the threat, which is what the Thai guys did because they responded immediately and they had no way of knowing whether the Brit would stop the attack after just that one slap, so from their point of view the threat was ongoing and therefore it was self-defense.
