  1. Nothing to do with drinking a couple of bottles of Lao khao everyday, then?

They drink that to kill the bugs they eat.I know Isaan is poor and over centuries they have scrambled to find food to eat,and i have tried pretty much all they have to offer. Now when i go i take my own food,no disrepect to isaan people out there, but i just cant eat the stuff anymore.

  2. What a lot of cynical comments! My TGF comes from a perfectly good family, has a good job and owns a large house, new car etc. I spend time between the U.K and LOS, and we take holidays together, usually within Asia, and we are perfectly happy. Marriage? I don't know! Things are perfectly O.K as they are, but what the future holds, has yet to be decided. Age difference? She is just slightly younger than my eldest daughter in the U.K. but it doesn't make the slightest difference to us, but then I do work and specialize in Anti-aging Medicine (AAM). I think the other important consideration is that we are also best friends, and both working in different aspects of the medical profession, means that we can talk to each other and have common ground!

and of course she is chinese/thai hi so !! biggrin.png

  3. I met what I thought was a decent Thai girl. Her family were presses us to marry. She had a kid with her ex Thai bf. They had only lived together ..... I just kept saying no. The girl was very pretty. Turns ouf it was all about money. She told me one day she would leave unless I would marry her. I drove her to the van twenty min later.

I can still see the look on her face. I bought a new sim on. the way home.

    good for you!

  4. A guy i once knew, good looking, great job

Hardly fits the demographic of most of the 'expat' basket cases who get married over here, most of whom are the wrong side of 55, wrong side of 90kg on the scales, left their looks behind in 1975, and haven't had a job since the 1980s.

sounds like your talking about me!tongue.png

  5. If you look at the quality of foreigners and how they behave in Pattaya I can understand some resentment. (not talking here about the average expat) That of course does not justify bombing them.

If too many people at a spot are replacing local people tensions will rise. Just like the Muslims in Europe are tolerated until they reach certain levels and then people start to complain not feel at ease.

Its natural (not right), that if you feel as a local your a minority in your own city to feel some resentment. Combine that with how the woman are treated and you get this.

Lets hope its a one time thing.

I agree, cambodians, burmese, laotians all taking their jobs for cheaper wages(sounds like the UK) plus an increase of foreigners coming here to live makes thais pissed off, envious etc. plus old expats giving their ladies a lift up the material ladder.

  6. 2.4% interest is an average rate, you can get a fixed term where you pay no tax,but immigration dont recognise the account if using for retirement extension cos you cannot draw on it.

Probably 8ollox but I'll give you a chance....

    - Which fixed term deposit gives tax free interest?

I have always had tax deducted and then claimed it back in January the following year.

    - Which fixed term deposit is not recognised for retirement extension?

Ever since I had the retirement option my 800,000 has been in a term deposit, which is moved around on maturity to get the best rate. Immigration have never batted an eyelid in seven years.

There is such a thing as a fixed interest deposit that yields a higher return but you cannot touch it for the duration of the term.Immigration do not recognise this because you cannot access the money.the 800,000 baht can be in an account that bears a higher interest rate than a normal savings account but you have to be able to access it if and when needed during the life of the extension, just so long as it is topped up 3 months prior to ext. renewal and of course the 800,000 has to remain as 800,000 or more for those 3 months....ps.this higher interest bearing account is not subject to any tax on interest earned.

  7. Be sure to use 10W40.....

Living in Thailand I see coconut oil in Tesco most of the time and I use it for baking and my wife steals it to put on her hair. There is also a little bottle of it available in the pharmacy department but I don't know if it is the same as the ones I see next to the olive oils in the grocery department. It's not cheap I seem to remember 200 or 300 baht for a small (less than a quart) bottle of extra virgin oil.

You could google the benefits of extra virgin coconut oil.....you will be amazed.I have found a " shop that sells coconut oil(mixed with something else) for hair loss treatment...its only a 50ml. bottle, lasts me 1 week, cost 200 baht, but i am amazed i have new hair growing in abundance, and it started to show results after only 1 week.

  8. Returning happiness to the Thai bosses.....................

Try being a boss and having to pay 9000 for someone to sit around, most of the time sleep and when awake play on phone and see how happy you would be.thumbsup.gif

Keeping in mind the bad bosses usually have 3-5 of those for the job of one.

then they have the right to sack them.

  9. I have been waiting to see if there were any comments by anyone who was there that night

A fellow I know , claims he was

And that Jack was thrown out of another bar on the same Soi earlier that night for repeatedly 'dry humping' the waitresses

And that he was off his face on something , as were his friends

And that his group were way out of order , and all advised to go home by the management

    But they didnt

He says that you only have to look at the debacle outside AFTER the assault to work out how trashed Jack and his group were

The fellow I know witnessed that as well

He says Jack was blacking out and coming to and lashing out at everyone

He even assaulted the paramedics who attended but then left

His female friends were walking around screaming and crying when alls that was needed was for someone to get him into a car ( and , 'yes' , they had a car he says ) and take Jack immediately to hospital

Instead , he claims , they <deleted> around for half an hour planning revenge and carrying on like idiots and NOBODY would have anything to do with them

My informant is clear he didnt see what took place inside the club

Nor is he an advocate of violence

But he says that if Jacks behaviour inside the club was anything like what he and his group exhibited outside , then he was not surprised at all that Jack got into the situation he did

His view is the opposite of most posters here

He claims it was Jack and his crew claiming that Jacks mother was "influential" in Australian diplomatic circles and that he was immune from consequences ( as he was tossed out of the bar earlier in the night )

And that it was Jack who came across as a spoiled and 'priviliged' kid and that he his friends were all carrying on like spoiled idiots

I dont 'know' the facts , but this informant , I have had verified , was there at the time

Im not trying to justify the violence in any way ,nor was he

Just thought that some of the 'pieces' to the story may be informative

( Some assertions I havent checked but readers may be able to verify ; 'Jacks mother works for the Aus Consulate' and ' Jack was eventually driven to hospital by drunken members of the same party as ambulance men refused to do so ' )

I also know people in Samui as a resident barkeep. I have also heard this apathetic dribble before, so I know who this is from. Ashley mate, as someone who has played pool with you on many occasions, i know all about your problems with drinking and your love of violence - things I will not elaborate on on this forum. Your story of that lad is rubbish and one of the reasons why you were sacked from the bar in Samui not long after. New bar with your grand opening? Baloney! Sacked you too right mate. Happy to see you leave Samui. Good luck in Phuket and I hope you dont try to bottle another poor lad in the need of your help in the gutter bleeding out. Not gonna miss you one bit mate!

maybe you ought to have PM'd your reply rather than let it be for all to see?

As far as buying a condo, its difficult to see capital appreciation cos most people want to buy new/off the plan rather than 2nd. hand....also over a number of years the building falls into disrepair unless you have a good management team.

If you buy high end,and i'm talking millions of baht worth, yes you can get capital appreciation.

Better to keep money back home and bring over when necessary, and rent here.

  11. This whole middle east thing is really sunni v shia, anyone with any sense would sit back and let them get on with it..........they deserve each other!

Meddling in the ME has never produced any tangible results..........the only thing at stake(for the west) is oil!

Let them slaughter each other, then go and pick up the pieces, like birds onto a dead carcase.
