The cops can never do anything right it seems. One day we lambaste them for a lack of presence, then when they show up, they are criticized. I think it is  praiseworthy that the Brigadier General went on a foot patrol and took his senior officers with him so that they can see for themselves. He's trying to make a difference.

It’s better than nothing. But don’t tell me that every shop on that street didn’t know in advance what was coming and that’s the major reason why nothing untoward was found.

WoW, New Zealand numbers seem crazy low while USA numbers seem crazy high.

The numbers aren’t accurate anyway. I have been overseas and back to Thailand 3 times this year. So I’m a triple tourist….but I live here.

Every visa run by every person results in an additional “tourist”. I don’t know how much it skews the numbers, but the anomaly is there and TAT don’t care because it is in their favoir

At least you can give an intelligent reply.  Your countrymen were incapable.

Can you describe (briefly) how the Royals generate this enormous amount?

Take a look at the crowds outside of Buckingham Palace on any given day and add up how many are tourists. Take a look at how even Trump is enamored by the Royal Family and how it affects his attitude toward Great Britain. Multiply that millions of times.

The contribution to charitable causes is well documented. No point to go over them again.

One point of order,  I’m not British. Singapore is my home country, which means that I can look at both sides of a ledger and appreciate the financial benefits of soft power and branding.

They've opened the borders to cheap mass tourism by opening up their visa system. They then want quality tourists.

    Something is a miss there.

If you want quality high spending tourists - go look at Barbados, Maldives, St Lucia, etc

If you want cheap trash, high crime, visa free look at Thailand.

You are right in most respects, but the visa thing is a red herring. The island countries you mention don’t have much in the way of visa requirements.

How much is needed?  Which international law states the requirement?

Your king no longer serves any useful purpose anymore other than the tabloids gossip, scandals and pomp.

Maybe it’s time for the UK to give it up.  Must be a tremendous burden for the UK taxpayers.

No mention of the enormous amounts of money that the Royal Family generate? The  benefits to charities of their support?

The amount funded by the British tax payer is dwarfed by the other side of the ledger.

    Pretty useful in my eyes.

  6. It’s perhaps optimistic to call this an initiative at this stage. But anything that brings drunk driving and how to curb it to the fore, is a good thing.

Unfortunately they just haven’t thought this through and it’s a single standing idea rather than a comprehensive package of measures to truly clamp down on drunk driving.

I give this a 1 out of 10 for content and probable effectiveness, 10 out of 10 for at least talking about the issue.

Sure, but it would be nice especially when we are talking about Thailand, to see some stats and data as to claims being paid or not being paid?

So far, my claims through Bangkok bank insurance have been paid. That is about 60k for storm damage under house insurance, treatment at Bangkok Bank hospital when my daughter fractured her back, a small operation on my knee under medical insurance and just recently treatment at Bangkok hospital for cuts to my arm that needed 14 stitches.

The only issue I have had was for follow up treatment to my knee when I was overseas. They didn’t pay out and didn’t say why, but it was a small amount for dressing a wound. I think they basically didn’t believe me as the treatment was in Lithuania.

i had a couple of motor claims that paid out ok. Different companies.

Thats over the course of 20 years.

  8. 120 taxi drivers so far. It would be nice to know how many drivers there are in total, whether this training is mandatory and how many drivers will be trained per week, penalties for those who don’t attend etc etc.

The cynic in me says two weeks in this will be quietly forgotten about and the original 120 might limp up to 240.

This safety PR blitz ( like the high fives for dealing with a malfunctioning escalator at suvarnabhumi airport) is all very well, but stickers and news releases have to be backed up with action, consistent action.

Damn that's good do you need to apply while in your home country? I pay $40 a month, not needed it but been meaning to drop into the bank for a few months now to see if I can get a better local one

I applied via AA insurance brokers while seated at my house in Phuket. Took less than an hour to swap e mails, send them copies of my passport and receive the policy certificate in my inbox.

i believe AA insurance have several offices throughout the country. I originally contacted them via a recommendation on here.

I think it is time to review some laws, as there is a need of people like this.... Of course everything according to the new laws, but be fair opening a business with a sharehold of 51% for Thais and the investor only has the minority of 49% of the shares is not inviting new businesses. Besides that tourguides are a protected Thai occupations and no foreigners are allowed to do it and you can only hire 1 foreigner on 3 Thai employees.. It is not of the 21st century anymore. The lazy Thai people are being protected but are keeping the country away from going forward.

A need for what people? People who knowingly break the current law, thereby getting Thai immigration all stirred up, such that law abiding people are forced to jump through more hoops? Those people?

If Thai people want to be lazy and backward, that’s up to them. Farang just need to stay within whatever the laws are.

At least this is one case where it can’t be said that the 60 day visa free has caused it!
