  1. why not just settle the finance and buy it properly,.( in your name ) too many things can go wrong here, this was a scam years ago called TOP in the states, what can you do if after you have paid this hefty deposit and a few montly payments and wake one morning to it being gone, the cars not yours,..the cars not even cheap,.dont take any chances in thailand,a frind of mine bought a car off a thai lady for cash, put it in his name, 2 months later a very irate farang was knocking on his door saying his thai wife did not have his permission to sell ! ,..it didnt matter as the car was legally his but it was a sad ugly scene,.

  2. It seems like most of the replies are not really the sort of advice hes after,.did he mention he was on a budget?,.neeroys and others wouldnt be on my short list, and as for nickys we went there a month ago and smoking seemed compulsory, :o , these are cheap charlie expat places, not somewhere to take your mum surely,.it seems most people answering this question are thinking for themselves on how to stay in pattaya as cheap as possible,..some of you would be giving her a bowl of rice and a leo beer it seems :D

  3. Oh Jeez, he/she is taking her mother out for dinner and you suggest cheap ass joints such as neeroys to eat some muck that cost 100b <deleted>.

To the OP stay well away from soi Choyapoon or whatever, it's a sh*thole.

Do yourself and your mum a favour and get across to Cherry's on 3rd road opposit to Xcyte Disco for some truly excellent fine dining at reasonable prices. Granted it will cost you more than 100 bht but is way cheaper than the top end resteraunts of Pattaya but of the same quality.

The guy who runs it used to be the head chef at Bruno's which is one of THE fine dining establishments in Pattaya but at much lower prices and much more casual. Believe me the food is great.

There is another thread but you would have to search for it, it was called the best eateries of pattaya and this place was having constantly good reports. The only thing it does tend to always fill up quickly and for 2 people dining I would budget somwhere between 600 to 1200 thb depending on what you eat and how many courses you have.

You beat me to it, why not crazy daves or ther dogs <deleted> come to that, jeez i wouldnt be taking my old mum anywhere near any of them, ,.shenanigans or sizzler would be fine, and of course cherrys, super meal, however give her a treat and take her to the birds and the bees /cabbages and condoms, its a beautiful place,.

    Gun

    I just do not understand.

I worked for over 20 years having to carry a gun.

Now I do not have to and do not want to again. I still own one, but left it back in the US with my brother, a gun collector.

I have taken several human lives. It is horrible. Yes, they were total scum, one was a woman, but still feel horrible about it.

To watch someone die..to see what your weapon did, it's not pretty. It's not clean.

Years after, I still wonder if I did the necessary thing on all but one, where she left me no other choice.

    I have to ask though,

Why do some of you feel that a drug crazed nut is going to pick your house to come into? An intruder doesn't necessarily have to be a drug crazed nut.

    Why you? Farang = money.

Why do you feel you are going to be the victim of such a crime where the use of deadly force would be needed? There could be many reasons, the obvious one is farang = money. For some it could be a love rival, jilted lover, business associate, problem neighbour, jealous sibling, drug dealer, bookmaker & so on. Or is it.."just in case"? If the law can't/wont protect you - the onus is on yourself. I believe that within reason, one should expect & prepare for the unexpected - worst case scenario.

I'm not being a smart ass or lashing out...I'm just curious.

I respect your views which have clearly been fashioned by your previous employment. However, I wont be swayed by the anti-gun brigade. When I do make the permanent move to Thailand - yes, a gun will be added to the family toolkit, along with an electric perimeter security fence, cctv and other measures - you can't put a price on the security & well being of your loved ones.

I never said I was anti gun. I was actually referring to some of the other posters.

I support the right to own one. :o ( gosh, I'm from the old west for heavens sake, Arizona, where you can still wear a six shooter in public..a friend of mine is even still the Town Marshal of Tombstone. )

    Quite the contrary..

I just advise that if you do own one..you do so responsibly. Of course.

Gun, wired fence, cctv and other measures??? What part of Thailand are you moving to???? Most likely Buriram, but as I suggested - I'd employ such measures wherever I land (provided it's within the law of course) ( Sounds like west Los Angeles )

If you are serious about protecting your family from any chance of misfortune then I suggest you avoid cars and airplanes as there is far more risk from this then there is being cornered by a crazed drug fiend in Issan. Thanks, but I'll stay on the roads & keep flying - I'll also keep my gun. Mind you it won't offer the same opportunity to play with guns.

I am so glad that I don't live in a world where I feel the need to imprison my family. I wish I felt the same; sadly I live in the real world - a world of increasing threat. I'll take whatever measures I deem fit & proper to counteract this threat.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this subject.

I think what this thread has shown is different ways people perceive danger and threat.

To my mind, the likes of Clayton seem to live in a world where any number of dastardly deeds might be lying in wait for them around the next corner. He sounds like a man who is nervous and in my opinion, a touch paranoid.

I'm sure he'll tell us otherwise, but he also sounds like a man who has not lived for a long time in Thailand. I remember when i first came to Thailand ten years ago, i felt more vunerable and at risk, just because the surroundings were new and i didn't know what the level of danger was.

Now i do and i can honestly say, i can't think of anywhere safer to be. I certainly don't need a gun.

Of course the doom mongers will say that nowhere is safe. True enough but nobody can deny that some places are safer than others. And seeing that most of us have the economic freedom to decide where we live, i can't understand why anyone would choose to live in a place where it's necessary to have a gun in the home. I suspect the truth is though, these peole would choose to have a gun if the could, no matter how safe a place was, just because they like the feeling of having a gun.

These people would seem to support the idea of us all having guns for protection. Thinking that through, that would surely mean a lot more guns in the world. One in every home perhaps?

I can't help but wonder what sort of world you want your kids growing up in?

I live in Surin. Would you consider that to be an unsafe place? I have been here 2 years and their has been 8 people shot and killed here in that period of time. Before I lived in Leesburg, Virginia USA for 12 years. A lot of people there hunt and I would guess the vast majority of people have guns in their home.

In the whole 12 years I lived there I can only remember 1 murder.

Was any of the 8 farang? ,i doubt it,. its no different to drug gangs at mossside or watts is it ? ,private ,locals fueds,. we can all pull these figures out,if you move to moss side or similar then yes possibly you will get caught up in the crossfire, i love my family way too much to put them at risk, so these sort of areas are off my residence list,.

Surin is probably one of the safest places to live in Thailand. The crime rate here is low for Thailand but still high compared to some countries. Where in Thailand do you live that that is safe and has less crime than Surin?

I take it none were farang then, actually name the last farang killed during a break in anywhere in thailand ? ,..you have more chance of winning the lottery than being shot by a burglar,.im off to buy my tickets with the money i had saved for a gun ! :D

I should avoid cars and the roads here considering some people such as yourself choose to drive without a licence. Their are many more people killed in road accidents than by guns.

Oh dear, now you are just making things up.

Are you that desperate to try and win your argument at any cost?

Could you please provide any evidence that I have driven a car without a license.

If you cannot provide any evidence then please stop making these untrue allegations.

I have never driven a car without a license.

Oh, and by the way, having a driving license doesn't make somebody a good driver.

They didn't even test me before providing me with one.

Its a bit like arguing with smokers, they will say anything to justify their habit,. :D
  4. Let the braggarts and those of high moral purity take two steps forward. What possible usefull purpose does this poll serve??
Braggarts ?,. high morals ? id say answering yes is normal, for the normal !,.a man that is unfaithful to his wife is not a man to be trusted, and not just by his wife, i feel most that are like that marry out of insecurity,.and the biggest lies are told to themself,.
  5. I remember a while back how a guy who lived in Thailand, but was married to a western girl, posted about how he employed many Thai women in his company but found none of them attractive. He claimed that Thai women did nothing for him. He failed to mention that his wife also liked to read the forum and that he was posting under duress - probably reading what he was writing over his shoulder. :o
Anyone making those comments is either blind, gay or under the thumb/terrified of their probably overweight wife !,. :D

    Gun

Well heres my feelings, a good friend of mine ( he was best man at my wedding ) was in his house when 3 men came one with a sawnoff shotgun ,3 weeks ago, ( google colin pester plymouth ) colin put up a fight, they pistol whipped him then shoved the sawn up in his stomach, colin goes to bat it away and it goes off and blows his side out, they step over his body ( he survived ) they drag his wife helen by the hair upstairs whilst their 7 year old looks on,after robbing them they flee,.this is a real life event, do you really think colin will now go and get a gun ? no i think even if he sees a gun in a film he will shit himself,.they cant even return to that house,.in his words, if i had just let them take what they wanted maybe this wouldnt have happened, he didnt have a clue how how he would react, would you ?,.

    Gun

Surprise is the best form of attack,.if you are going to have a gun keep it strictly to yourself, .if a potential robber wants to rob you bad enough and he knows you have a gun it may back fire on you,...ive read most of these posts and there really are some ignorant ( as in unknowing ) people on here, in a panic situation will you be in control ? i seriously doubt it,.will you really be able to walk tall after killing someone ? ,.

In a panic situation and you have nothing you are in more control than if you had a gun?? Will you be walking tall with your family dead and you did nothing to prevent it ? Some people are smart enough to plan ahead. Apparently you are not.

Oh sorry clint eastwood, you go and buy your gun, me ill just put my hands up and let them take the lot, usually when burgled putting up a fight is what causes death/injuries, ask a cop or someone in the know, live coward or dead hero, you take your chance ,and i pray that if you are ever unfortunate enough to be burgled that they arent armed,if they are and you pull a gun someone will be hurt, Do you feel lucky punk ?,. well do ya ?,. lets hope its not you eh clint,.
  6. I thought the nuovo was different from the mio..

The mio is the same as the fino..

The Mio, Fino and Nouvo all have exactly the same drivetrain and engine packaged differently. Pretty smart marketing I would say.

and just in case someone was wondering....the Honda Click and Air Blade have have the same engines too.

Then why is there a power difference between the fino / Mio and Nuovo ??

I know the Mio and Fino are parts interchangeable but didnt think the same applied exactly to the Nuovo. For sure the mio and fino are weaker on pulling power.

moi and fino 115 cc, nuovo 135cc,
  7. I'm wondering which to buy, the Yamaha Nouvo or Honda Air Blande.

I've had a Nouvo before and they feel a little bigger than most small bikes here but now I hear a lot of good things about the Air Blade too. I had a look at one but it seems a bit smaller than the Nouvo. I also prefer the slightly larger wheels on the Nouvo (+2").

The price difference is minimal and of little consequence.

What do you'all think? Nouvo or Blade?

Hi phil, i have spent the last few days looking at both and opted for the new nouvo elegance, i really like the tu tone paint but what threw me was the 135 water cooled engine,.honda couldnt answer the question of when they were/if they were doing a blade with a bigger engine so the yam it was,.goes like a little rocket !, im also going to fit a pair of wider tyres as a friend of mine did this and it felt better on the road,.
  8. Toyota selling more trucks is nothing new. People here have been discussing new model Toyota's for YEARS NOW. At the end of each year, you will be told "new model next year!", then next year arrives and the sales morons will tell you "no, at end of year!".

Been there done that, Jeff. Dont waste too much time checking, just buy whats right for you.

    Dave (happy Isuzu owner)

My isuzu dealer said it might be in 2 years - i don't know. So i decided to buy this and am happy with it, not to mention a real head turner. People just come saying its a beauty etc...sometimes getting bored with it :o

is that the pearl limited edition ? , i saw it at the bitec show, very nice, love the paint job,.
  9. So I live in Pattaya, and am visiting the USA. A friend dragged me to the Eagle on naughty night and the bar is filled with men mostly over 40 up, almost nobody under 30. And they are cruising EACH OTHER. I found it bizarre, depressing, and not fun. Like if all the young Thai men left Pattaya and only the old farangs were left to select each other. A bar in Thailand with a crowd like that wouldn't sell drink one, but this place was packed.

I guess you can't go home again (and see it the same way).

its much the same for the older straight guys visiting a bar " back home ",the girls are either young and wouldnt look twice or old women that you wouldnt want, thank god for thailand ! :o
  10. I wonder why this hasnt been on the news here in Thailand??????

We here so much trivial stuff on the news then something so tragic happens and all quiet on the eatern front.

    My thoughts with the famile

    rip

Another example of farang being of no interest,. :o
