  1. This will be no different from purchasing a new car,. with a large deposit it can be done,. ie if the property has a value of say 3 million or so anyone will lend 700.000 on it( interest rates wont be favourable i feel ) ask the bar girl wives, they do it all the time ! ..one local to us borrowed 600.000 and went to a cambodia border casino and lost the lot ! wait til the farang husband comes back ! :o

  2. Took your advice pkrv and read through a lot of the old threads (head hurts now), lots of sound advice particlarly from Irene, Quicksilva and the like.

The only nagging doubt that remains is about the condition and value of the asset in 25-30 years time, it is a long term investment and me and missus will hopefully only be interested in the rental income. But we'd like it to be of worth to leave to our son.

Hua Hin market is quiet now compared to the insane boom of recent years, but it's steady and I haven't seen any drop in prices, they're still rising infact for the mid to high quality properties. Houses are the bigger share of the market here, obviously due to land availability and the relatively inexpensive, but ever-rising land prices.

What was consistent reading through the years of old threads was Mr Bing Bong saying the bubble will burst any minute now.

To be fair his 1,568th graphic, the one of the declining cumulative progress 's' curve overlaid on that gantt chart had me a tad concerned :o

    Cheers,

    Burgernev

The value can be derived from evidence of what comparable property will be selling for at that time.

Typically property is depreciated over 30 years, however that does not mean that once it is 30 years old it is worth zero. (IF that was the case Buckingham Palace would be worth nothing, which i think you'll agree is inaccurate). What happens at that time is the value is derived based on its effective life. Judgements are made by professionals on the condition of the property.

To compare western properties to Thailand is not practical , forgetting Buckinham Palace ,we all know 2 things.

a ) The west has a very strong secondhand market , eg London

b ) Thailand residential has a very weak secondhand market ,Thais try to avoid , so left to a few westerners to buy

To buy a property here and expect to an asset in 30 years time to leave to next of kin is a big call , without even talking about proper maintenance

the property might not be worth Zero but i think compared to the general market in 30 years you might be leaving a very undesirable

    property.

Compare this to a central london property in kensington, where i think your next of kin would be very happy in 30 years if left a property.

I would be very supprised if someone would recomend a long term 25-30 residential property here as good investement to leave to the next generation.

Ithink that after 25 years most thai built properties are on their last legs ( ie, falling down ), you cant say that about a property built in the west,( well in the uk anyway ) so actually look at land speculation,.we just moved out of a 15 year old property and it was looking very secondhand,.we were lucky to get our money back, the people that bought it levelled it and are statrting the cycle again,.investment ?,i dont think so,.. for the normal man in the street to live in yes,.buy,.
  3. I can't believe the amounts you guys spend - no wonder so many farang in Thailand are broke.

I rarely spend more than 5-600 baht on a night out. I'm not sure how it's possible to spend much more, unless you're the type who needs your ego (falsely) boosted by having a bunch of farmer's daughters pretending to adore you everytime you buy them a watered down orange juice for 150baht.

Not much point buying OJ. No value for money. Might as well throw your hard earned cash in the crapper.

Buy your female drinking partners a few bottles of Spy wine cooler each & the entertainment factor gets an exponential boost as well as the time factor because it is a little hard to knock back a full bottle of that stuff in under a couple of minutes. :o

Thanks for the advice, but no thanks. If I wanted to devote my valuable free time to paying for conversations as complex as 'where you come from, you mee mia laew?' I'd think it was a good investment. But I'm too old for that bullshit.

Its the same when i go to the Philippines on business, it's the same. I'm thinking of getting cards printed up with the following words on them and handing them over before they've finished the first question:

    England, but live in Thailand.

    Yes

So sod off and leave me alone, you skank.

You sound like fun to go out with ! :D
  4. I can't believe the amounts you guys spend - no wonder so many farang in Thailand are broke.

    Quite easy actually.

Not even have to go to any so called upscale places.

If I meet, lets say 3-4 Thai friends out. We will normally drink Wiskey. I happen to like Chivas, so I buy a bottle. As you know, in regular thai bars/pubs/restaurants it is not always possible to order the drinks by the glasses. One has to order a bottle.

Then we want something to eat.

Before you know it, the bill is actually allready 4-5K (for the food, Wiskey, mixers, etc).

I have a "farang salary", so the price for the bottle here is a fraction of what I had to pay if I bought an entire bottle in a bar back home.

And, as we all know, normally the one with the highest salary will be handed the bill.

So, no GoGo bar, or lots of ladies. Just a few friends out enjoying an evening.

Im not broke. Im not a rich person. I have an ok salary, which makes me able to save money and have a good life here.

Needless to say maybe, but I do not go out every evening.

Ditto, some of these comments on here seem to be from people struggling to stay in thailand,if i had to watch that i didnt spend over 1000 baht a night id go back home and earn some money,i spent similar in the uk to what i do here, its all relevant to what you have and what you earn, some will die wealthy,. i hope im not one of them ! :o
  5. I often hear this question from Thais I know. Often they have little understanding of farang culture, which in itself is a good enough reason for not introducing them...

Pray tell, what is farang culture? I too have no idea, even being a whitey. For instance, I have a horrible time understanding German culture when I talk to Germans. Their views and humor are completely alien to me. I mean, they seem to be from a different country! Imagine that.

Good point - farang come in more flavors than Thais do. Should the eligible bachelorette look for an older American, a frustrated Frenchman, a bald Belgian, a hirsute hippie, an auspicious Aussie, a krazy Kiwi? We agree she should not look in bars and massage parlors for a future husband, but should she hang out in urologist's waiting rooms? The AUA or British Council library? The Breitling store at MBK?

Exactly gentlemen. The definition of "farang culture" used here is quite simple = culture relating to farangs. You do need to ask the young lady what she means by "decent" and what exactly she means by "farang".. :o

Which brings us back to: If she has to ask such a question she's probably not worth the introduction. :D

Cant agree,if she has visited pattaya or parts of bkk she could have a valid point, these places are full of chain smoking beer swilling losers and cheap charlies, who in there right mind would want one of them !,.her looking for a decent farang is no different to any of us looking for decent thai lady is it ? .,.and will probably be as dificult,.
  6. Rang the bell in mistys one night, that was 30.000 baht, he definatly ripped us off, never went back andy i beleive the manager /front man was called, horrible bloke,.on another occasion tony my friend and me did a 12 hour shift in bubbles, never went short time once and the bill was 45k,.no regrets, was making good money and i have never been tight or had to live on a budget,

  7. Well for me it isnt very often that i go out ,but i do tend to be a little extravagant, usually im releived of 20-30.000 baht for an evening,.one night in Phuket my friend Alan and i did 50.000 !,.in the UK quite often would spend 500 pounds or more, especially if we went to legs 11 in Birmingham ,.

  8. I wonder how the drugs were administered. Thai urban folklore usually features a spiked drink. However the nipple alternative is also widely rumoured.

Life can be tough in Thailand's "Fun City".

But seriously, I hope he makes a full recovery. Some of the drugs used illegally to incapacitate people have previously resulted in severe long term psychological problems for the victim.

This happaened to a friend of mine near the nana, he went for coffee with 2 ( questionable ) ladies and one was feeding him peanuts,. he woke in the morning skint and looking like shit, rolled into the nana hotel about 9am !,...didnt have a sore @ss luckily :o
  9. Some very good ideas there, I like the bigger storage and being able to refuel without lifting the seat.

The combi brake sounds like an intriquing, if a bit scary, idea but does it "work"?

Can you disable the kickstand switch? I would find it annoying if the bike was going to switch off every time I put the kick stand down (to open a gate or something).

I'm mostly worried about the size. I've had a few Wave's and they feel really cramped for me while I feel comfortable on a Nouvo due to it's slightly larger frame. How does the Honda compare, in your opinion?

The new neuvo goes like hel_l !,. I have ridden a few bikes with linked brakes,,the first was a 77 moto guzzi 850 le mans, and more recently a honda blackbird, i liked it,
  10. Jamie, why not rent for 6/12 months first, get a true idea of whats hot and whats not, be very careful of information given in thailand as most is financially motivated,.there are horror stories involving real estate, get to know some friends, see where they live, how long they have lived there, what they paid and what they are worth now, there is no boom currently in pattaya and whatever you hear it is a buyers market, good luck,.

  11. Jumping up and down over this amount of money , was it worth it ?. if you know thailand you would have known that any money given to a thai is on a one way ticket,. western ways dont work here and high blood pressure is almost unheard of in thais, leave your " we have rights head at the airport ",...

  12. Simply amazing how a person can live with this ,.these career criminals no matter how well educated are stupid arent they, how many get away with it for life,.and then when caught red handed or innocent run off,.,.i hope if he is guilty that he does get the death penalty,.let it be a warning that the world is becoming a smaller place and all the low lifes that run to thailand wont be safe, here is a prime example that letting these types in wont keep them straight,( as you would think if on the run ).as i said they are stupid,.i am normally a pacifist but in this case if guilty this guy needs treating like a mad dog and putting down,...R.I.P to the victim,.

  13. Impressions are relative. In 1968 I arrived from the appalling chaos of Calcutta. Bangkok seemed quiet and clean, like a small town extending in all directions. The people were unbelievably clean, the women beautiful. Didn't see anybody dying on the street. It was a relief to walk around without a crowd of beggars in pursuit. I was trying to get home to Canada and had very little money left. I slept on a beach in the Pattaya area (wasn't much there) for a few nights and fell in with some nice young Thais who took me back to Bangkok and found me a place to stay for free until I could leave for Japan on a freighter. Altogether a very good impression!
That was like reading a good adventure book as a child, many thanks, :o
  14. When is the new Mitsu SUV out. Whats its gonna be called? I( might be interseted. Been lookin at the Nissan Xtrail but its far too small. Its got independant suspension allround though which is a big plus compared to the pick up style fotuner and MU7.
Or make your own out of a triton and some steel, ( this was spotted on sukomvit rd pattaya yesterday, back door hinges look like they are off a barn door ) :o

  15. Hello all,

I'm new to this forum and have an XR250 that I would like to sell, and I kindly request your help in pricing it fairly.

    Here are the details:

    - 2004 Honda XR250 Motard

    - 23,000 KM

    - Supersound performance pipe

    - Custom Tachometer from Japan

    - Recent Dunlop ArrowMax GT501 180 rear tire

    - Recent Steel Sprockets & RK O-Ring chain

    - White Luggage rack

I paid 150,000 baht in Feb. 2007 for this bike because I trust my Thai friend who got it for me. We were sure that this bike was never disassembled (I've seen many suspect XRs and Kawi DRZs that were taken apart and reassembled).

This bike always starts and runs great and I have never had any maintenance issues other than normal wear and tear. The front Metzler is probably due for a change soon, but the rear Dunlop has plenty of life left.

It is unregistered though and I have the original invoice.

I love the bike, but I decided to sell it to help finance my longer stay (with girlfriend) in Chiang Mai, Thailand... so I would appreciate any pricing advice. Of course I'd like to recoup most of my initial investment, but I'm not sure what fair market value.

Thanks in advance for any advice! :D

    Mike

Around 100,000 id say, and the chance of the bike coming into thailand in one peice is very unlikely,.if it had of it would have proper papers, il,bet you have a container list with the engine and frame numbers ( md32 ) travelling seperatly :o , not a problem though,
