I just came back from Thammasat uni,lots of scandinavian-speaking people there,but nothing to do,noone coming there so far.

When I was starting to learn the Thai alphabet, I noticed that certain consonants were similar to Thai - M,Y,J were 3.

I remember reading somewhere that the Thai alphabet came from Sanskrit, as did the Hindi. King Ramhamhaeng used or modified some to make the modern Thai alphabet.

Would love to know the history of the Thai language if anyone knows?

Add a few trailing words such as หน่อย เถอะ ได้ เลย บ้าง to alter the meaning as you like.

When your boss assigns you a big job, you usually will use ไว้ใจผมได้เลย or something like that to say "Trust me to get the job done".

When your gf sees lipstick on your collar and says you've been cheating on her, you will say เชื่อใจผมหน่อย to mean "Put a little faith in me".

When you say you saw Elvis, you will add เชื่อผมเถอะ to say "Believe what I say".

What ever happened to Dtruat Farang for Christmas......

I know the literal translation but that way I have been addressed by Thais at Christmas is Sawasdi Dtruat Farang......

And of course Sawasdi Pi Mai for New Year.

I think you are thinking of the word "dtrut" / "dtroot" - the same word as in "trut jeen" (Chinese New Year).

"Dtruat"[LL] means "inspect".

Immigration are called "samnak ngaan dtruat khon khaw meuang" in Thai.

I have personally never heard any Thai greet me with "sawatdee dtroot farang" - maybe this is Issan dialect or something? My girlfriend who is Northern Thai has never heard the expression.

I used to hear it some years ago but it's not so common nowadays.

ตรุษ "druht"(end of year)+ฝรั่ง "farang"=ตรุษฝรั่ง"druht farang".It can be used for the whole Holiday Season with both Xmas and New Year.

Here are some holidays with ตรุษ "druht"...

1.Chinese New Year=วันตรุษจีน "wun druht jeen";or,ตรุษจีน "druht jeen"

2.Thai New Year/Song-kraan=ตรุษไทย "druht Thai"/ตรุษสงกรานต์ "druht song-kraan"

3.Christmas=วันคริสต์มาส wan kris-maat";or,Christmas+Western New Year=ตรุษฝรั่ง "druht farang"(also Western New Year)

Yuletide/Xmas time=เทศกาลคริสต์มาส "tetsa gaan kris-maat";or,เทศกาลตรุษฝรั่ง "tetsa-gaan druht farang"

I am very curious as to what this says.

I came across it when I was having a drink with a friend and this thai girl he had met somewhere along the way, she knew the barman and were chatting away until they thought we could understand what they were saying so they started writting things, obviously, about us. anyhow one of the pieces of paper became my property and I have tried to get it translated, but no one will tell me what it says?

The only way I could work out to put in the forum was via my avator.

  My wife ran your post into my language lesson tonight and explained to me that it was a rude comment by the way it was used in this context. It actually said "it speak thai" "It" is not a proper form to use when you are talking about a person and thus rude.

  มันพูดไทย at the top. มัน is a pronoun normally reserved for animals and inanimate objects. When used to refer to people it shows a lack of respect. It does get used a lot though, in the third person.

I couldn't read the line crossed out in red but the second word could by 'big' in Thai.

Everybody seems to be a bit paranoid and then he projects that paranoia onto our Thai speaking friends...

I think the note might actually say the following...

มันพูดไทยว่า ควยใหญ่ "mun poot Thai wah_koo-ai yai"=In the Thai language, it is said like this,"Koo-Ai Yai"/In Thai,it is called "Big Dick"!

Here,the pronoun มัน ( "mun"=it) doesn't refer to the person himself but rather his "member" in Thai.

Maybe the note wasn't meant as an insult at all but rather a compliment for being "well-hung"!

Hope this helps and makes some sense!

Which basically means happy new year/christmas.

If you want to keep your words, it should be more like:

Govt to slash red tape on Thai naturalization 

BANGKOK: -- The government is to cut the bureaucracy surrounding requests for Thai citizenship, Interior Minister Bhokin Bhalakula announced today.

Requests for naturalization normally fall under one of two categories: people who have always lived in Thailand and speak Thai, and foreigners married to Thai nationals.

Mr. Bhokin, who earlier this year was embroiled in a controversy concerning the naturalization of hill tribe residents of Mae Ai district in Thailand's northern province of Chiang Rai, said that the Interior Ministry was now laying down less complicated rules for naturalization.
