The other thing I dont understand is if this " drug " is on the nipple or some other part of the body , why does the one with it on not get knocked out also ?

    Jeff1@2005-04-29 03:07:32

I never had a nipple that tasted bad  :D

but as I asked before , why does the one with the nipple ( or skin ) not get knocked out ?

Because it's a transvestite who got his artificial boobs from a sex-change operation :o

  2. Here is the story i got from my wife, and one of my thai neighbors who both believe in this. But according to the is there are no drugs involved. These people have some black magic powers. About six months ago, this girl told my wife that she was walking on second road near big C in Pattaya when three girls approached her.they started a friendly conversation, then touched her wrist, and she gave them all herjewlry she was wareing, about 6000 baht, and gave them all the money she had. Thais are very superstisous ( i don't think i spelled this correctly) asnd firmly believe in this so called black magic.

In the West, that black magic is called hypnosis. :o

Not all Thais are superstitious while some Westerners are.

  3. I am making a web based software that makes transliteration in Thai for Finnish words. I am not sure if I can find any use for it.. maybe I can make a fin-thai dictionary or something later.

I am not so good in Thai language but I can read OK.

First I would like to know if it's possible to produce R or S in end of the word? For S I would like to translate a word like "Species", "Cars" or whatever. And for R maybe just "Car". Anyway the sound of Finnish R is different. :D

    Thanks!

Excuse my ignorance, but it is not that different from the "R" as pronounced in formal Central Thai as far as I have heard?

I have always heard the Finnish "R" as being close to the "R" in Spanish (the tip of your tongue bounces with force of the alveolar ridge (the ridge just behind your teeth), and this is also the way a Thai "r" should sound, although the majority of speakers default to an "L" sound in informal speech. Of course, at the end of words, the Thai ร becomes an "N" sound.

    Perkele! :D

I have always heard the Finnish "R" as being close to the "R" in Spanish

    Perkele! :D

    Hyvää päivää... ruotsalainen poika! :D

You seem to have a knack for Finnish there Meadish...so how would you translate the following greeting into Thai..."saatana perkele haistaa vittu"? :D

I hope it's polite because it is often heard among Finns...especially while they're ingesting some "Koskenkorva"! :o

    Cheers, :D

  4. I think it is a new word on the streets that people are using to refer to the trendy, "new-age" Thai teenagers who dress unusually, and are interested in crazy or unconventional ways of (mis)spending their youth.

Khun Yoot may correct me here but I think the แนว refers to แหวกแนว, which means innovative or unconventional. Then again, I could be totally wrong!

Your answer is quite right, Edward B :D

แนว refers to แหวกแนว, which means innovative or unconventional at the first step and the second step แนว refers to style. เด็กแนว will have their own styles(แนวใครแนวมัน).

There is no specific definition of เด็กแนว. Some said it means people who have the high self-confident, but some said เด็กแนว are people who like to copy their favorite idol's style of dressing such as punk, hip-hop .

เด็กแนว love to dress unusally such as in old jeans which look dirty, listen to indy music (there is a radio station in Thailand call Fat Radio, where there is a person who started to use the term เด็กแนว . Hence, เด็กแนว are people who love to listen to Fat Radio too.) and do so many things which common people don't do. Speaking with their own slang. Sometimes people call เด็กแนว as people who do things in perverse or cranky way. :D

neo-hippies,punks,New Age, rap, etc, - there's nothing new anymore!

    Nothing new under the sun.

How would you say that in Thai, to connect this thread to the Thai sayings thread...?

A good idiom in the paper today, ขี้เเพ้ชวนตี khi pair chuan dtee, to be a bad loser, to pass the blame when you lose, but why 'sheepshit invites you to fight?'

Sorry Mr. Countryside, but there is no sheep (or goat) buried here.

Once you see that the word is "lose" and not "goat", you might also see how to analyse the expression.

    แพะ = a goat

    แพ้ /phae= to lose

Well,Meadish...I never said he was smart! :o

    I remember

Your memory doesn't serve you very well BarnOwl and your English could be better too.

You're also projecting some of your feelings onto me,but that's another story.

You might learn something from the following if you can remember it... :o

Human memory does not operate as if it were a videotape camera. We do not simply record some event in our memory and then later retreive an unblemished recollection of what happened.

Human memory is much more fragile, suggestible, and prone to distortion and decay than we typically realize. As a result, mistaken eyewitness testimony rarely involves outright lies; instead, it usually corresponds to commonly occurring distortions in memory functioning.

Memory consists of three stages: (1) storage, (2) retention, and (3) recall. Storage factors can impede memory accuracy when we find ourselves unable to recall information from our memory because it was never stored there.

Forgetting a detail demonstrates that when we experience some event, our brain makes an instaneous decision whether to store information related to that event - or simply disregard it. The decision to store or disregard corresponds to how we evaluate the event - something worth remembering or merely a trivial circumstance?

The influences of the retention stage can corrode memory via three factors: (1) passage of time, (2) frequency and length of exposure, and (3) new information. Surprisingly enough, memory not only fades away with the passage of time - it also grows and expands.

What fades from memory over time is the actual experience of an event. Consequently, each time we recall some event we must reconstruct it - asking ourselves what happened and how it transpired - and with each reconstruction our memory can change. Therefore memory recall, or the reconstruction of some event, responds primarily to our sense of what is plausible. We actually recall bits and pieces of information and fill in the gaps with inferences or "educated guesses."

After witnessing an event, we are sometimes exposed to new information that can actually change our memory. What is known as the "post-event information effect" often transpires as a result of our dialogues with other people. For example, an eye-witness to some event frequently discusses with others what they saw. In the aftermath of some event, the eyewitness and others may speculate as to exactly what happened, the sequence in which it occured, and the degree to which various participants were involved. Rather than facilitate reproductive memory - the accurate reproduction of some past event, an eyewitness' dialogues with other people create reconstructive memory - a reconstruction of the past which may be quite inaccurate because it responds more to considerations of plausibility than fact. Therefore, people can reconstruct inaccurate memories after witnessing some event as a result of discussing that event with other people.

Now go back and read all posts objectively. :D

  15. this word was a topic of discussion among Thais too. None of each discussions I have read, all people agreed that it's long. It was about the same as I asked people who are around. Later I read on some papers which are reliable, the information mentions about this word is pronounced as long, but not all of Thais pronounced it as long. There still be a lot of people in countryside pronounced it as short. It's started to pronounce as long from people in the central of Thailand.Even in a paper from RID has mentioned about this word too. It says the original of this word was pronounced as short and distorted to long later.

If you read this clearly you might understand. Many Thai words are pronounced different from their form, but all Thais are used to with them. Thais in some parts of Thai may not pronounce it the same so no one correct and no one wrong,it depends. Why RID doesn't put the length in every pronunciation of Thai words? It's because if we spell it as it form we will get the correct pronunciation by itself. Don't ask every Thais if any words is short or long, they probably don't know , you can try this with you friend. :D

That's why I asked people who is around to test my understanding.

Sorry everyone here. I can't keep quiet while someone try to insult me. I hope everyone here would understand. I want to clear with "snowleopard". You are not native Thai . You have limit in Thai language the same as I have limit in English langauge. There is not any problem with me to accept that. (มันเจ็บปวดนักเหรอไง)

  18. Is a silent h common in Thai words?
Probably more common than the silent K or G in English (Know, Knot, Knight, Gnaw, Gnome, Gnat).
    - there is no rule for knowing if it is silent or not, other than learning word by word.
As for a rule, I reckon there are simple rules you can learn to recognise whether it should be silent or not. For example, if the consonant immediately following the ห has a tone mark then the ห is silent. Similarly if the consonant has a vowel above, below or after then the ห is also silent. Note that อ and ว would both be counted as a vowel in this case. So หวง is huang, not wong, and หมอบ is morb, not hom ob. If a vowel follows the ห then you pronounce it. I thnk I've got that right. Can't think of any exceptions. Where's Khun Yoot?
