  1. 1) Do not need air ticket at Vientianne - at some embassies/consulates in the region you do.

    2) Immigration may ask for evidence of money to support yourself whilst in the Kingdom, but is rarely asked for. Just take ATM card with you so you can access some cash in the very unlikely event you are asked.

Thanks for all the information. One last question: I am currently on a 3-months Non-Immigrant ED visa single-entry (as we figured out in that other thread, thanks again). This visa will expire somewhen in december. From that day on I need another 3-4 months to finish my research here, so doing border runs with tourist stamps would not be enough (max. 3x30 days as far as I know). One option would be to ask my university here for a letter of extension, but this would cost me another 25,000+ THB because I would have to register for another semester and some classes (which I actually do not need and never would attend). So the Vientianne tourist visa sounds like a good option. However, can there be any problems because of my current visa? How much time in advance should I go to Vientiane to get the tourist visa? Can I do it in advance already having a valid visa (which, of course, will expire after I leave the Kingdom as it is a single-entry)?

  2. So if I understand you right I do not even need an airplane ticket back or a certain amount on my bank account like I would need when applying for a tourist visa somewhere else (see below the quote from the main website of ThaiVisa.com)?

    http://www.thaivisa.com/immigration/visa/tourist-visa.html

    2. DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

    - Passport or travel document with validity not less than 6 months

    - Visa application form completely filled out

    - One recent( 4 x 6 cm.) photograph of the applicant

    - Air ticket paid in full

    - Financial means (20,000 Baht per person and 40,000 Baht per family)

    - Consular officers reserve the rights to request for additional documents as deemed necessary

  3. It does not give you any extra time.
    4. The re-entry permit will keep that current permitted to stay alive - it will not add any time to it - on return you will get the same date stamped in your passport as you currently have.

I had a 1-year multiple entry visa before and was travelling the first 6 weeks, leaving and entering the Kingdom several times. Everytime I entered the Kingdom, they stamped me a 3-months permit, i.e. everytime I entered the Kingdom the 3 months started from new. Effectively, it was after 4,5 months when I had to extend my stay for another year, not after 3 months, because everytime I re-entered the Kingdom another 3 months were stamped. So I thought having a 1-year single entry visa with a re-entry permit will do the same, i.e. leave the country and get another 3 months stamped. Is that different to a 1-year multiple entry visa?

  4. I was at the True counter at Tesco Lotus today and they called some of the major shops. All out of stock. :-( However, they told there will be a big event at Queen Sirikit beginning of october; not sure if it is a True event, iPhone event or cellphone fair; but they said there will be iPhones on stock. Of course, not sure if we should believe in that. It might have been a trick of that gay guy to get my number :)

  5. Slightly more expensive....but dealing with True....I'd rather pay the extra :)

Why? I mean, I will not subscribe any of their services, just wanna get the device and that's it, so (if they are really that unprofessional like people say here) I actually would never have to deal with them again.

So if someone knows more about when they have stock again I would be glad about an update :-)

Does someone know how/where to jailbreak an iPhone 3GS here (I do not mean unlock, but jailbreak)?

  6. I am going to buy an iPhone 3GS. I would like to have a new and original one so neither second hand nor any chinese fakes. Can someone recommend where to buy it? Is MBK a good place? Buy it at True (or do I need to be their customer)?

Do I need a jailbreak or unlock? I've heard of it but according to Wikipedia a jailbreak isn't needed in Thailand as they are not allowed to bind a device to a certain SIM card here.

Is it furthermore possible to customize the cover?

  7. If you are able to extend - which that Thai letter seemed to provide - all you need is a single entry visa. You then extend every 90 days.

But I probably will go travel some more times, so I think I need a multiple entry visa?! Or can it be that I do not understand the meaning of a multiple entry visa.. I thought I need a multiple entry visa if I want to leave and come back during the time the visa is valid.

Unless it has expired already I suspect that you did not have a multiple entry visa or you would of gotten a 90 day entry instead of 30 and 15 days when you entered before.

My first visa was a 1 year multiple ED visa, which I got by the Thai consulate in my home country. It expired half year ago, but my stay was permitted until mid of august, so I thought I can still use that visa. Maybe I am wrong again, but that is how I now interpret what it is said on the immigration website, where they say "The Expiration Date for the visa should not be confused with the authorized length of your stay in Thailand, (...)"

  8. I had a one year multiple ED visa because I am studying at university. After my first 3-months-extension I had a stay permitted until mid of August. I left to visit my parents and came back beginning of August, when the immigration officer at the airport told me that - although the stamp in my passport stated that I am permitted to stay until 15.8. - cannot use the visa anymore but have to get a new one. Someone later told me the reason was that I did not get a re-entry stamp before leaving the country to my parents. So I got a stamp for a 30 days tourist stay.

I went to my university in Bangkok where, after some days procedure, they gave me a letter in Thai and an additional letter in English. I went to the immigration in Bangkok where the immigration officer told me that the letter in Thai is for another 3-month-extension, but not for a visa change to a new ED visa. The letter in English, although the same which I originally used back in Germany to get my first 1 year ED visa (saying that I am a student at that university etc.), wasn't enough as well. He told me to go to the university again and ask for the correct letter.

Back at university, they told me I should leave the country and get a new visa at the border. The english letter that I am student there should be enough. So I went to visit Angkor Wat again and tried it at the border. But the immigration officer there told me that at the border they do not give any visa but only a 15-day-tourist-stay. I should go to the immigration in Bangkok instead. Discussion was useless, so now I got 15-days in my passport and do not know where and how to get a new 1-year ED visa, although I am regularly registered as a student here. Furthermore I am worried that, even getting any other letter from my university for a visa change, the remaining days of my tourist stay of course are not enough for the 21 days which are required for a visa change. Do I have to leave the country again, then come back with a flight to get a new 30-days-stamp so I have enough days for the required 21 days for a visa change?

  9. Two of my friends are currently looking for an personal english teacher or school which offers an 1-on-1 teaching. Does someone of you has a recommendation? Actually both already can speak english quite well, although they do not believe it and so do not practice regularly. Therefore the course should include some conversation/practising in listening and speaking.

    Thanks for you help

  10. Thank you guys!

The "quick trip" is the problem: As far as we know the visa-runs available leave Bangkok in the morning and will be back here in the evening. Therefore he would loose one day. So considering that he probably has to do the visa-run we were thinking about two options:

    - A visa-run leaving Bangkok in the afternoon or later: Do you know if there are any availbe?

    - Renting an own car to do the visa-run in the afternoon or later: Do you have any experiences with that?

  11. Hi ubonjoe,

not sure about the first point, I only know that is a Non-Immigrant Visa Type "ED" for 1 year with multiple re-entries. Anyways, he does not has any letter from a University, as he is actually studying in Germany but came here for the internship (while I am studying at a Thai University).

Is the tourist visa only possible with a visa-run or can it be issued here in Bangkok at the Immigration Office?

  12. Hello,

my friend, who is working in the same office, will finish his internship (3 months) soon. He got a 1 year non-immigrant visa type ED with multiple re-entries. His internship, work-permit and first 90 days will end at the same day (somewhen next week), but he wants to stay in Thailand for 3-4 weeks more to travel with his parents.

    • Does he need to do a visa-run or can he simply extend his visa for another 90 days in the Immigration Office?
    • If not, is there a possiblity to simply get a new tourist visa for some weeks in the Immigration Office?

He simply wants to avoid the visa-run if possible due to his tight schedule. When I had to extend my visa (same as above) after the first 90 days I simply went to the Immigration Office, but had to submit a letter of my University in Bangkok that I am a regular student here (I am studying here in Bangkok), so we are not sure, if he needs a similar letter.

Thanks in advance for your help!

  13. Can anyone recommend an apartment (or similar accomodation) near Emporium Tower matching the following requirements?

    - Area: Phrom Phong, Asoke, Thong Lor

    - 3 month contract

    - monthly fee < 10.000 THB (excluding water/electricity)

    - Cable TV, fridge, DSL, hot water

    - NOT required (but nice to have): swimming pool, gym

    - HIGHLY appreciated (would pay a little more if possible): kitchen

    Thanks for your help!

  14. 5. When it comes to publishing own content to the Web - like putting own videos on YouTube, writing own thoughts and feeling in a Weblog, putting own pictures on Hi5 or Facebook etc. - what do Thai people like most? Do they like writing? Videos? Photos? And what do they like to receive most (read, watch, listen)?

  15. I am currently working on a proposal for a project with an international company here. One of the first steps is a typical brainstorming to generate some ideas and possible approaches to work further.

I appreciate if you would try to help by answering the following questions. As it is a brainstorming, nothing of your response is wrong or correct, anything you write down which comes to your mind can be helpful. Multiples answers are possible and appreciated!

    1. "Taking care." - What comes to your mind? Write down every word, phrase or idea down that comes to your mind.
    2. What makes a "good" company for you? When do you feel your company takes care of you?
    3. What anxieties do you cover when your apply for a new job? How can a company counteract?
    4. What Video (e.g. You Tube, MTha!, Sanook) and Social Network (e.g. Hi5, Facebook, MySpace) websites are popular in Thailand and for what ages?

If you cannot answer a question (or don't want to, please try to answer the other questions anyways).

    Thanks in advance!

  16. I think (!) the book my language school gave me uses it. But I am not sure. Will have a look at it.

Anyways a circumflex (grave,...) above one of the letters instead of the preferable above-both would be okay for me. So if someone can say how to combine it, would help me a lot. Or type it in here so I can copy/paste it (epsilon, open e, mirrored e and striked u combined with ^ ´ ` and ˇ).

  17. Thank you both for your answers. The BabelMap seems to be an interesting tool for me. Anyways I do not know how to combine the characters with it. E.g. I know how to find the "OPEN E" and the "COMBINING CIRCUMFLEX", but BabelMap then puts the two characters next to each others instead of combining both to one open e with a circumflex above.

@ Richard: E.g. elephant ช้าง in my transliteration system is cháang so with a long aa and high tone. As the long aa is high (and not only the first or the last a) I would prefer putting the tone mark above both aa.
