  1. Thanks for your replies.

I've been to Koh Phangan plenty times and quite like the island (except the Fullmoon Party), especially the north. That's the problem - we actually wanted to see something new :-) (we just went to Koh Phangan in January during our last vacation, and basically all vacations before coz our European friends always wanna go there). We thought Krabi could work even during rainy season.

I had a look at Khanom, but it doesn't really look that promising. Maybe it's just the pictures...

So next best would be Koh Kood and Koh Samet?

PS.: We'll be travelling the last week of August (23rd-31st).

  2. I will have a vacation in Thailand and Myanmar for three weeks in August/September: One week Thailand, a couple of days Myanmar, then back to Thailand.

Before the recent crackdown on in-and-out and overstayers the 30-days exemption would just have worked fine for such trip, but now I'm worried that I could be refused entry when coming back from Myanmar.

Do you think I should get a multiple entry tourist visa? Or would I not be affected by the new regulations because I'm not hopping in-and-out but will in fact spend some time in Myanmar?

  3. We'll be travelling in Thailand from end of August til beginning of September and are looking for nice islands/beaches. So far our plan was to spend our three weeks at Ralay Beach (Krabi) and on Koh Lanta, possibly with a short break on Koh Phi Phi (just a day trip or one night, coming from Krabi).

    A couple of questions:

    - What are the best destinations for that time of the year?

    - Is Phi Phi islands closed during that time? Any other islands which are closed?

    - How are Ralay Beach and Koh Lanta? Would you skip either one or do you think both are equally nice?

We prefer quite, beautiful nature over tourism and night life. Our favorite in Thailand, to give you a better understanding, is Koh Nang Yuan.

  4. Can you recommend a hotel with a jacuzzi (or at least a big bath tub) in room? We would like to have some relaxation time after the long flight and before traveling onwards.

  5. Can anyone recommend a spa package for a couple to spend a relaxing afternoon together? Should have different treatments (massage, bath, sleeping/silent room, etc.) and should be enjoyed together, of course. Ie. not just going to get a massage together, but spending a whole day together getting pampered in a nice environment. Doesn't matter whether it's in a hotel or a spa, though some kind of wellness hotel (if such exists) would be preferred.

  6. Can you recommend any cake or gift delivery services in Bangkok which are reliable and not super expensive? I want to send something different than flowers to the missus :-) I know some of the flower deliveries offer cakes and/or gifts as well, but the hare super expensive and the gifts are pretty much stupid toys and teddy bears.

Is Lazada or any other shop offering gift service?

  7. Interesting that you seemingly wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a 13 year old child and a grown woman though.

I've encountered enough examples of adult girls (20-35yo) looking like teenagers (13-17yo). One of my giks is 20yo. When she is waring make-up and a nice dress, she indeed looks like that. Even with the braces. But when we went to an island together and she came without makeup, wearing sneakers, a short jeans-skirt and her small Hello Kitty backpack, she looked like 13yo, and the Thai guys selling the van tickets actually stared at us and some angrily asked me if I was with her. Her cousin apparently is 28yo and likes to lay young Thai boys in the 14-16yo age range. According to my girl, she looks even younger than her, in particular when she's dressing like a teenager so those boys pick her up at shopping malls.

  8. What's wrong with a set-up of this type if that's the case?

It has the potential to make people do something they actually don't/didn't want to do. That's why many countries don't allow such practices.

Did you look at the picture of the girl in the article? She's as tall as the officers surrounding her.

She's actually shorter than all of the men in that first photograph. I smell something.

You don't seriously argue about how old an Asian girl looks when the only thing you can see is her back?! Everyone who lived in Asia knows that many Asian females have the body of a 13yo; look into her face and she might indeed look like a 13yo, but as well could look like a 35yo. Ever wondered why the yellow press likes to use photographs showing the big, fat Farang and his Thai prostitute from behind?

HE said she told him she was 19yo, but regardless of that the man was wanting to have sex with a 13yo child

If she really told him she was 19yo, how can you conclude he wanted to have sex with a 13yo? Doesn't sound logical, don't you think?

  9. I am not sure about here in LOS, but in my country, you are innocent until PROVEN guilty in a court of law.

In Thailand, you're guilty until you prove you're innocent. Sad but true.

And while they are at it they should take a walk down Soi Cowboy in BKK and pick up the numerous 13 & 14 & 15 year old girls working as prostitutes in full view of the BIB...

This forum would certainly be a lot quieter if only people who knew what they were talking about piped up.

The modus operandi of many pedophiles is to be a good bloke...gain the trust....and then go to work on the victims.

Not that familiar with the various methodologies pedophiles may use...care to enlighten me?

Maybe you decide for one before you post.

  10. I will be leaving the country soon and need a tax accountant to assist me in the following two matters:

    1. Income Tax Declaration (and anything else related I have to clear before leaving)

    2. Treatment of a severance package of almost 2mm THB (in particular seeking advise how much tax I have to pay because I'm not sure if my company will know it)

Can anyone recommend a good tax accountant in Bangkok?

  11. Saw a picture on Facebook a while ago of friends-of-friends going up to the roof of an abandoned condo building to have a picnic there. One of the most exceptional ideas for a cool dinner I saw, and something I'd prefer over going to State Tower or Long Table again and again.. I know there are other nice/cool/romantic places in Bangkok, but mostly it's a restaurant, or something you find in a guide book, whereas I am really more looking for something outstanding/exceptional/creative for a date.

    Do you know such places?

  12. Did the multinational employ you within Thailand, i.e. with work permit and taxes paid?

Yes. I was employed by the local entity (a Ltd. setup under the Amity Treaty), have a valid work permit, and parts of my salary were kept for tax.

If so, you should have no problem repatriating those funds.

Would that be a normal foreign bank transfer where usually pretty high transfer fees are charged?

  13. The following situation:

An employee is terminated without cause. He has worked for more than 119 days. He is entitled to severance pay. In the Employment Contract, the Employer agreed to give advance notice of 6 pay periods. Including these 6 pay periods, the employee would have worked 17 months. Thus, he would be entitled to get severance pay of 90 days at the last wage rate. Excluding these 6 pay periods, the employee would have worked 11 months. Thus, he would be entitled to get severance pay of only 30 days at the last wage rate.

Question: When calculating severance pay, will the notice period be included in that calculation? My understanding, and that's how my lawyers think and also how this website thinks, an advance notice defines the last official/contractual day of working: Your employment will be terminated in 6 months. Thus, the employee is actually working, at least officially/contractually, even if then company tells him to not come to work anymore. However, I also heard other opinions, so I would like to double check with you guys.

Related to that, a fixed annual bonus of 1 month salary would be affected by that, too.

  14. I worked for a multinational but my salary was paid through the Thai office on my local Kasikorn bank account. Now I have, depending on outstanding payments (severance, etc.), up to 3,000,000 THB on that account, which I would like to get to my German bank account since I don't plan to stay here forever.

What is the best (i.e. cheapest) way to get money out of the country? I.e. without paying ridicously high fees etc. The other way round, I did never have any issues because I was able to use my bank's VISA card without paying any fees. Even the THB 150 fee from the Thai banks were always reimbursed.

  15. Home country is Germany, and all my funds are on my German account. Also, my company is still paying my salaries on that account; my contract might move to the Thai entity later though.

So would I need is a bank account with:

    - Transferring my funds from Germany without too many fees involved (at least less than Western Union)

    - Online-banking capabilities

    - Visa-card that works abroad; best would be without transaction fees

    - Simple opening process (work permit etc. is okay, but obviously I can't show that I have a certain income here in Thailand but only in Germany)

I had a Bangkok Bank B1st account before, which was really easy to setup and use in Thailand, but I thought it was rather limited regarding paying abroad (afair it was a debit card which was supposed to work with Thai ATMs only), online-banking, and transferring money from my home account.

  16. Some more information:

So far, I was using the Visa debit card of my home bank, because I can withdraw money at ATMs worldwide without any transaction fees and they would even reimburse me the local 150 THB ATM fee (even though that fee doesn't occur at their end). However, I just lost that Visa card, and they obviously need 3+ weeks to send me a new one. All my money is in that account, even my company pays my salary into that account, so it's quite a mess. Someone will send me cash with Western Union now and I will transfer money from my bank account to his one using online-banking.

So I thought the best/easiest way is to open a local bank account, and just put the money from my home account into that one. So what would be the best product/bank for that?
