  1. P.S. A word of warning. If you have anything embarrising in the drawers you will find they sorted all your sex aids by type and organizied the condoms by size, color and texture. At the end of the day I found a porn DVD sitting neatly on the shelf. I have no ideas where they found it as I hadn't seen it in a year or so.

    :D:) !!

  2. Also, yesterday I happened to read City Life alongside a Bangok magazine called Chilli <something> which contained considerably more drivel and pictures of wannabe high-so people at gala events, however that one costs 100 baht.. So there you go. :)

Another interesting thing about Chiang mai city life is that it shows so well what happened to Chiang Mai over the past decades.. Like put this month's issue next to one of 5 years ago, and of those 10 and 15 years ago (CM news letter then) and notice the difference..

  3. Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the ideas on this topic of fuel choice....

Anyhow, I'm down to a car choice between a Toyota wish 2.0 gasoline, or a fortuner 3.0 desiel. Could even go a fortuner 2.4 gasoline..... hmmm.

Any suggestions about which would last longer (Desiel?), be more reliable (Desiel?), get better resale value (Desiel?), and be cheaper to run on the road over say, a 10 year period (Desiel?)

Has the Toyota Wish been updated recently or is it still the one based on the old Altis? If it hasn't been updated then I wouldn't go for it; get the Fortuner or wait for an updated Wish.

  4. I doubt very many Thais would mistake a teenage luk krung as being the girl friend of her father. Maybe a step daughter, but a mixed child? Not likely.

Agreed. Don't really understand where Birdman is coming from.. Probably doesn't even have kids (of either the 'before' or 'after' category).

It's really only an issue with (Western) tourists.. and who cares about them?? Like water off a lotus leaf, it means less than nothing.

( Anyway, in response to the OP, in my particular case the challenge would be to restrain the Mrs... :) )

My daughter is 12. We went swimming and had fun. Some average Thai men on the shore had nothing better to do than stare at us the whole time and say to each other: Farang choob dek.

and who cares about them?? A: The daughter, because at that age she does not understand the situation entirely, but feels the negativ behaviour towards the father.

Let me first apologize for making the statement that you 'probably doesn't even have kids'.

But yeah, typically if people make such a statement it's usually not from the smartest or most important people in your lives.. In this case a quick acknowledgement that you understand Thai usually does the trick, possibly towards your daughter but loud enough for them to hear.

Either way this would most certainly not be any kind of reason to not spend quality time with my children.

  5. Perhaps we could all use the same standard for describing our connection speeds. For example, I use KSC at the office which is located in Sansai.....

ADSL Thailand Speed Test 860 / 424 kpbs

However; if I want to check connections to foreign countries, such as Los Angeles in the US, here is my connection speed using DSL Reports Speed Test 808 / 415 kpbs.

My speeds are similar using the two different sites but I'm sure that those who use Maxnet INDY will see a considerable difference.

    Last Result:

Download Speed: 3379 kbps (422.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 3948 kbps (493.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

TEST TIME:: Wednesday May 06, 2009, 11:48 AM

  7. fact .... one bar 12 foot by 25 pool table etc in the bar boxing centre at the bottom of loy kroh road used to be open untill 2 or 3 or 4 am ........ last night ... 11 30 ....closed ... bye bye .... whos next ?....... how many ?... the future of girly bars in chiang mai ?

    Yes.

But it's okay, because Chiang Mai is a 'cultural' place where tourists only go to look at temples, and nightlife = kantoke dinner.

  8. Actually this new chief was previously stationed in Korat, not Big Mango.

He quite simply states that he will be enforcing laws that are already on the books, but that have not been enforced previously.

And I wish him the best of luck doing that.

If he really did though then this forum wouldn't have many moderators, unless they all had work permits for this specific company or were living outside of Thailand. And there wouldn't be prostitution, or any of the apparently lesser issues I listed above. :)

[Edit: Yes, helmets are important too.]

  9. you forgot to mention the crackdown on drunk drivers or is this to close to home !! Let us hear about the things that you think are the "biggest problems around".

First of all let me apologize for wrongly assuming that everyone would see the blooming obvious when it's right in front of them. So let's see, not in any particular order:

    - Theft/burglary

    - Domestic violence

    - Murder

    - Drug offenses

    - Human trafficking

    - Poaching / envorinmental / pollution offenses

    - Corruption in general

    - Keeping people in brightly coloured shirts out of airports and ASEAN summits

    - and yes, drunk driving.

And probably several others. I'm not sure the Royal Thai Police force is really up to those tasks.. see how much effort they put in when reporting any of the above, versus the effort in fining school girls not wearing helmets 100 baht. Now there's a task they're very competent at!

  10. His statement about CM being a cultural city verses becoming another Pattaya is what impressed

Actually, this image of Chiang Mai being a tranquil cultural capital of Thailand lives predominantly in the heads of some Bangkok law makers. Then they cut Pattaya and Phuket all kinds of slack, but for Chiang Mai, noooooo Chiang Mai has to be preserved like a museum. They have no clue at all about tourism, or even the rights of locals to enjoy themselves. They think tourists go to Chiang Mai to visit temples 24/7 where in fact after visiting a temple or market or two they DO want to go hang out at THC, Rasta Bars, Spotlight, Bubbles and so on and get off their heads properly like everyone else.

It usually takes a while for new police chiefs to settle in, but in the end they always do.

  11. No, it doesn't. :D

But it's *SO* reassuring to see where the priorities are for the Royal Thai Police. Helmets, bike registration, and bar closing times.

We are so fortunate to live in a place where these things are the biggest problems around! :)!

  12. It is MUCH different when you meet under different surroundings... like day trips and trekking trips where you get to know each other on a more personal level. All sorts of strange things happen on trekking trips.

Do tell! And include pictures please.

You can't pay attention to names of bars, and Tuskers just didn't jump out at me.

There's a hint in there.. Tuskers needs to shape up and place either cute chicks or fish at the door.

Didn't realise that on this forum you even get shot down for saying thanks!!

We shoot people down for FAR less than that. :) Don't take it personally.
