I opened an account with BB some 3/4 months back at their branch in East Pattaya (Khao Noi). See post 4 on this thread:

    https://forum.thaivisa.com/topic/1077079-opening-a-bangkok-bank-bank-account/

    Of course, being Thaland, YMMV.

Same here shortly after reading your post. She also sold me accident insurance which I was grateful for because my previous bank stopped mine when I turned 70. I'm now almost 75. I feel certain I could've opened it without the insurance.

Are there any UK banks that anyone could recommend if I have to switch from Nationwide.

    My situation is :-

I am permanently resident in Thailand

I do not need a UK credit card

I have several monthly / yearly pension payments to be paid into my bank

I want them to offer a good internet service for my laptop

I want an account for making debit card payments and also a separate savings account

I am registered with the Inland Revenue with my Thai address

I will occasionally wish to transfer money to my Bangkok Bank sterling account

I have a Halifax as well as a Nationwide account. Have no complaints and swift transfers are only £9.50, although I use TransferWise to Bangkok Bank. Both have my UK address. Grateful you post the link to NW saying they are planning to need further proof of UK address.

I have a problem to believe this story . If you really have a normal 1 year visa based on retirement and a valid re-entry , immigration should not ask you any questions. I would call Big Joke directly if this had happened to me.

Well you would looking through rose-coloured specs. Try the non-tinted ones.

Been there myself, it's really scary how fast the termites can progress through the woodwork, and it's definitely one for the professionals to fix. Try tapping what looks like solid wood, it might well sound hollow, showing that the little bleeders are already inside and chowing down on the wood. A harder knock and you'll probably break through to their network of tunnels. They need dampness to live so try to make sure your floors and house are always as dry as they can be. You'll need annual spraying too, I have a pipework system installed in the foundations of my house which the lest control people pump termiticide into, plus for good measure they also inject it into a series of holes in the ground all around the house. Termite-free now for five years, touch (termite-free) wood . Good luck.

Me too and it's a nightmare. They seem to be able to eat the wood from the inside out, so as someone said, by the time you see the damage it's already too late. The only sound advice that I can give is to replace all the damaged wooden fittings with plastic or metal. They also eat the paper holding the plasterboard together in the ceiling, so if you see any infestation up there, have the boards replaced with treated ones.

A good quality Arai or Shoei helmet could have saved her life, the 250 baht job from Big C would not have made a difference.

No idea why people without a motorcycle license or, (more importantly) experience of riding a motorcycle rent them in Thailand, which has the 2nd most dangerous roads in the world. First time I rented a motorcycle in Thailand, I already had about 5 years of almost daily experience on a big bike in the UK, and still was shocked at how hairy it was, and how some of the pickup drivers drive.

I resemble that remark! I assume you mean Thai pickup drivers.

I think if the OP seasons his account at more than 800,000 baht for 3 months is it?... (and now 2 months afterwards)....  he will then meet the requirements...

So.. OP - for how many months have you had more than 800,000 baht in your account?...   It may be possible to fly out and do a visa run or apply for a tourist Vientiane etc while you bide your time seasoning 800,000 baht in your account.

Unless of course I'm missing something.

EDIT: And by the way, Embassies stopping the affirmation on Income has nothing to do with the Thai's - its to do with the Embassies themselves being unable to accurately affirm the claims made on income without a great deal of effort, thus opening them up to incorrect statements. Too many people were making false claims which could not be accurately verified opening the Embassy up to criticism of flawed affirmations.

Ya, I did the TM30 and the TM28, and after those, I go to the Residency window, but they said no, your retirement extension was in Phuket.

Never confuse TI with people who have common sense. If it's any consolation, they'd be equally unhelpful with fellow Thais. The milk of human kindness is but a trickle amongst Thai bureaucrats.

Is it all over by the 19th and no more water throwing on the streets? Does it always start on the 13th or do you get some idiots trying to start even earlier or finish even past those dates?

If you live out at najomtien, sattahip way it goes on a couple of days after the 19th. Also you'll find some will start earlier and finish later so be on your guard. Why they can't make it a one day or weekend affair, same day(s) nationwide I'll never know. It'd certainly make life easier.

Kor ror 2  they have always accepted my original one.

Letter from the bank  same day

    +  from my notes

I think I'll go to Sattahip and get a new kor ror 2 just to be on the safe side. The bank letter on the same day as the extension is going to be a beggar. I have a hike to Central Festival to my bank, which doesn't open until 11am. Then pick up the wife from school where she teaches in Ban Amphur and then on to Jomtien where goodness knows what they'll find to pick me up on. It's turned a short, straightforward trip into Jomtien into an all day affair. I'll miss my afternoon nap that's a cert. Now if I could just get the bank letter the day before........

Good reply but still have to have the dig at others?? Easy for you difficult for me! Your ok so leave it at that.....

I know what you mean, there're half a dozen on here who think that because people don't do everything the same way as them is the reason that they have problems. These types haven't got the sense to realise that everyone's situation is different, and just because something works for them, it doesn't work for everybody. Personally, I was very happy with legally obtaining the embassy letter and would much have preferred it to carry on that way. Jim7777 is just the sort of smug goit that you want see turn up to TI only to be kicked back for having the wrong stuff.

What used to be a simple process for many of us to transfer sufficient funds to live on, whilst meeting the required level of income, has now become a logistical nightmare for many.

In my case I transfer whatever I need monthly from my Santander Intenational account online, via TransferWise, it's quick, easy and very cost effective.

The fact that as I bank with Kasikorn and the deposit shows up as "Dummy branch" shouldn't be an issue, it's a regular deposit, it comes from overseas and have the additional paperwork to support the fact.

To be fair if I were a Thai Immigration Officer doing these sort of applications day in and day out, I wouldn't want to go through reams of evidence to satisfy me that the applicant met the latest requirement, as they or their superior decided were needed, maybe my local office will be satisfied with the paper trail, maybe they won't and I'll be waved away when I come to apply again for my extension next year.

So what are my options, I could open an account with Bangkok Bank, continue to use TW and hope that they mark the next twelve months transfers as FTT, if they don't mark one as such I'm probably scuppered.

I could get Santander to transfer the required amount every month and hope thay don't use an intermediary bank as that may not show up as a deposit from overseas. You can't initiate a transfer in Sterling to Thailand online, you have to call Jersey, the bank costs are higher, you don't get the same rate as TW and you have to pay a receiving fee, and of course if there's an intermediary bank they'll take their cut and it may not show up as an International Transfer.

As I've said before, why does such a simple task need to be so difficult.

Agreed. I guess that's why they demanded the embassy letter in the first place, which stands to reason. Goodness knows how it's been allowed to get into this state, guess it's just a mixture of the famous four embassies not giving a stuff and the lack of forethought by TI. I'd prefer to do the retirement visa income method, but I'm settling for the marriage 400,000 in the bank route.

  12. For the first time in 12 years, I'll be doing my yearly extension via the marriage visa route using 400,000 baht in the bank. I'd like to know please, how recent do the following documents have to be? 1) kor ror 2 marriage entry; 2) Letter from bank verifying seasoning and updated bank book.

    Thanks.
