1. I don't have a foot out [of] the door, I have put on free meal deals during the low season for the past 2 years and they serve to stimulate business.

There'll be a free BBQ again on Wednesday from 7pm whcih will go on throguh the England game. I make it clear in advertising that you have to be a customer - which implies that you do need to be buying drinks. So far no one has abused the offer and the free food has been enjoyed by all and hashelped create a nice atmosphere during the World Cup.

We're also running a number of main meal offers at 125 baht including Pork Steak, Onion Gravy, mash and veg (which tastes a lot better than the one in Makro Hang Dong - I know I've tried it!!), Shepherd's Pie, Baners and Mash, Beef and Onion Stew plus Aubergine Parmigiano or Veggie Vindaloo for non meat types.

When people haven't got much cash you have to drop prices and put on freebies to keep your regulars happy and attract new customers.

Awww not again! I always seem to not check TV and miss out on your specials :(

Don't worry Yunnie! There'll be another FREE BBQ this Sunday from 7.30pm before we watch England stuff the Germans (As a Welshman, I can't believe I'm typing this!!) All Chiang Mai bar owners will be hoping England fire a few howitzers at Germany on Sunday, before going on the last 8 and getting in behind Argentine lines and defending hard won territory.

    :ph34r::whistling::ph34r:

originating from germany i guess i don't need to bother showing up at your place-

at least not without an armored personnel carrier.

  2. the movie was shown but you rapped on the wrong door

when entering nimmha.rd from suthep rd take the second gate to the left into the parking lot of the cmu art center ,proceed straight ,look up ,see a target ,that used to be lit but isn't any more.that is the roof top mentioned before.

the movies-films are shown in that building when the weather is not permitting on the second floor in a small airconditioned auditorium otherwise on the rooftop.there is a lit sign on the second floor indicating which one.

when you initially get to the building on the groundfloor you will see a tall poster showing the lineup for the entire year of the 'new space for thinking ' venue.to the left of it is the staircase. be on time as the movies start usually at 7:00sharp if not a little earlier.

for current info check the blog of chiang mai's outstanding film critic thomas ohlson who provides for us free and never tiring

-thank you thomas-- if you should read this thread-- for your selfless contribution

  3. Im looking round at the moment for a used car in the 200-300k thb bracket, the problem I am finding is that there are no prices on the cars in the garage forecourts and as soon as I walk in im sure the price goes up in the car dealers head. Has anyone had experience of a decent car sales forecourt in Chiang Mai or is it a case of just keeping searching the classifieds till I see something there.

toyota dealer next to niom panit on mahidol rd also seemed to have a few when i checked ,with price tags.

but if you know about cars just offer the right price .write it down with your phone number as the seller is not the owner oftentimes-

    they will contact them.

like at most of the used car dealers going out towards jj market from NE corner of moat.

Excellent post and advice. For those of us with just one computer, here is the answer....

Light travels faster than sound, so to create the necessary time lag, purely site the computer 1 to 2 rooms or what ever distance necessary away from the screen you will be watching the match. Use the above advice to attach it to a stereo, then just adjust the volume to a level that you can hear it.

if i remember it right from the days of yore ,sound travels about 1km in 3 seconds or 6/10 of a mile ,you'll need big speakers and a friend to host them for you.....

  5. I had a nissan nv (envie?) the little pickup with a sporty look and nice to drive and there are plenty of those for cheap on my road ,the one to lampang,106, and it was thai made so there are parts.repairs however were expensive because of the parts prices.so I sold it and bought a nissan pickup for 50 k ,in good shape,20 years old ,no rust, and definitely cheap to run and not a target for the cops or thieves or your neighbors feelings.

after the purchase the previous owner told me that the original price was 98 k !!!

but i serched quite a while and it was an ok deal.

but answering one of your questions about low offering -it is definetely a matter of how rather than what-it makes a big difference whether you tell the seller that heap of junk is not worth more than half or if you tell them that you would like the car a lot but have a tight budget.even better for negotiating if you do not ask for the price but make the offer instead.no face lost ever.a lot of people are hard up now and selling a used car is not easy at the moment.leave your offer with your nr on a little slip and be surprised later.

  6. I took the reading and writing courses at the YMCA and they didnt ask me if i can speak Thai first, but they spoke mostly in Thai (very easy level) during level 3 reading and writing. Didnt like the YMCA but its probably because i loved CMU so much

cmu is huge-where do you go and when to get started?

  7. bought mine ,a 125 dream at the dealer on mahidol i think n.panit, on the way from the airport to the moat next to a toyota dealer 3 years ago.every time i go back there for minor adjustments and servicing they do it right away and free,no discussions. repairs ,i had an old model before, were always reasonable and professional.

however a friend of mine who rides by himself mostly and bought there at my recommendation pointed out to me that he gets much better mileage on his 100 wave ,fuel injected, than the measely 100 miles to the gallon my dream offers. the 110 has plenty of power unless you want to go into the mountains with a passenger often.

used i think so too is better from private people.i would get a honda.

  8. just like to point out that there is a viable train option too by switching in pitsanonluk i think.

i took the train up from bkk to nong kai and really liked it.met lots of locals on the train and had a good time.

from nongkai train station it is just a hop to the bridge.

  9. Thanks for the input! I'm going to try it again :D I'm leaving town on Tuesday morning though, so I'm trying to get it done before then... Any idea how much your wife would charge for it?

she gas a business at the nite bazaar and dies frequently.

    :)

    Hahaha, I hadn't even noticed!

    that is very funny indeed!

the wife is alive and well though and the best would be you call her but i cannot post her number here for obvious reasons -

send me a message or something and i give you the number.

she is very friendly and won't take much.especially if you give her the dye and you could just meet her at the night bazaar i guess or in serapi

  10. i used to live in viang ping near cm gate thats where the bicycle guy came by.he actually had the pot and fire on the back of the bicycle.

my guess is that you had the pants in a pot too small and didn't move it enough to get it even.try again with the brown and more liquid and stirring.

add salt later and or vinegar for fixating.i will be back in cm next week and if you can't get it done maybe the wife will do it for you.she gas a business at the nite bazaar and dies frequently.

  11. there is a parking garage building behind toyota on ratchadeammoen -sunday market street

they keep their new cars there.if i remember it right it is on a little alley right before toyota, coming from tha phae gate. inquire there.

a little down the road on moon muang rd before the kafe is a car dealer ,my guess is they will also do anything for money,i used them before and they are honest,if you can ever say that about a used car dealer....

  12. chiang mai plastic at wororot market has dye in a variety of colors.

there are also still a couple guys on bicycle that dye black for you.

not sure if they come through your neighborhood.

  13. unfortunately not in cm right now to get out the phonenr otr name but here it goes:

when travelling from the river to the trainstation after the station turn left on tung hotel rd -continue across nawaratroad ,the one with mccormick hospital -stay to the right when there is a fork ,shortly before you come to the superhighway near noppadom there is a big lumberyard where they sell every size and lenght wood and other woodproducts at good prices .i searched cm far and wide and there is no other like it.sorry for the vagueness of direction.

you can obviously also get there when you go left onto the highway after the trainstation and follow the road for some time by taking a left after noppadom ,a big building supply(you can also ask there for directions i guess) and follow the little road for about 500 m.

let me know if that didn't do it and i will study a map.

  14. it is you who are trying to confuse people with your tree hugging and unfounded claims/theories. HOW MUCH cooler than the ambient temperature can a building be considering that inside the building are various heat sources (example: 75 kcal/h - 300 btu/h per average human = 7,200 btu/day)? tree hugging cannot bend the laws of physics. period! adobe and similar constructed buildings are only "cool" in those areas where the ambient temperature drops considerably at night. if the minimum ambient temperature is 30ºC it is only a short matter of time till the inside temperature even of the best insulated building is at least the same or higher as the minimum ambient temperature.

I confess-i do go out and hug my trees and when the wife is not watching i fondle them too- besides of course to talking to them on a regular bases.

    as for ambience:

Weather in North Thailand
4 Jan 2010 ... Chiang Mai's average annual temperature is a pleasant 25 degrees C (77 degrees F). During the hot (summer) season, daytime highs can reach ...

  15. i am happy to see that there is some interest because understanding is everything.

only mentioned the adobe building( by pun pun if i am not mistaken) as an example that can easily experienced on what is possible without electric gadgets-didn't really suggest to add mud to the outside of your rental although it would probably be fun and help to even out temperatures during the day.

adobe holds up very well in the rainy season the walls are usually stuccoed for that matter and the foundation a bit above ground and also from concrete.the walls absorb moisture and it is quite dry inside.

chiang mai is not really humid on most days so something air con with water evaporation might work the trick however is not to grow mold and fungus or bacteria.

in hawaii by the way they pump deep ocean water through heat exchangers before returning it to the ocean to reduce cost of air conditioning.

attic cooling insulation and shading will be very important if you have air con to reduce otherwise staggering bills.

    high ceilings help.

i personally built designed my house myself, with 3.5 m ceilings ,wraparound porch for shade,a completely open attic with a solid ceiling ,cross ventilation and louvered windows(not many to the south) and the outcome is that we use the ceiling fan for sleeping only in the hottest days my guess is we have about 85 degrees/30 c max. the overall electric bill under 300/mth including the water system .

if you need 75 -deg / 20 c then Thailand may be a bit tropical for you.

drove around to look for foam backed aluminum (reflective ins for the attic or the porch) and found the best price at some home-diy shop on the second ring road past payap going towards city hall.

my offer to assist with advice was for those who look for it-

have been in typical and non typical construction for 30 years.

    most importantly however:plant big trees

  16. what a lot of nonsense

The simple fact is that your house can never be much cooler than the ambient air temp without aircon down here in he*l. All these 'passive' suggestions can postpone the heat a little, but it eventually becomes at least as hot as outside and at some point during the day, it will match the outside temps, then becomes an oven....radiating down the heat from the attic and walls mostly.....usually later at night.

The only solution that i can come up with is to move to the higher elevations. I was up at a friend's mountain land last week and the temps were quite civilized at 1,000mtrs. In the heat of the day, the shade temps were cooler than it ever gets down here in he*l.

no-sorry -the only solution to issues is that people that don't really understand something don't throw their opinions around and confuse the ones looking for truth and information.

if you just want to experience how it can be always cooler in the house than the ambient air temperature visit the little building next to the cmu arts canter-it's adobe. and houses a little cafe now(dindee?).generally the ground is a lot cooler than the air in the hot season that's how!

building on stilts is great for floods and gives you a cheap space to store or sit but the building itself will loose the thermal storage capacity of the ground it sits on.

it's never hot in caves,is it?

and with proper ceiling construction there is no radiation from above either.

just go visit a temple . or go sit under a tree.it is a lot cooler there the whole day long .

air conditioning yes- electricity and gadgets no! duh!

if you should be building or planning to do so i will be very happy to explain the concept to you and point out some inexpensive and eco friendly measures to keep the/your place nice and cool.

it is a lot easier when you plan for it rather than after the facts...as usual.

but even afterwards there is a lot you can do.

  17. lots of confusion here!

but all the bits and pieces necessary are mentioned.

    shade.

air at night -get the place cool -close it in the day keep the cool inside.

have the kitchen and the fridge separate ,windows open, or even better outside.

install roof turbines -they keep the attic at reasonable temps at low cost.

with roof tiles there is enough air coming into the attic-

with corrugated cement roofing (lighter colors are better)you need soffit vents for that.

the ceiling needs to be insulated against hot air and radiation.this is very difficult after construction with the products offered here because of the wiring and the wires used to hang the sheet rock panels from the rafters.it is a mess up there .go have a look.

best would be fill in or blown in insulation which i haven't seen here (yet) .

if yo need it cooler use fan or aircon.

i seriously thought of starting a business with locally (cheaply)made insulation for that matter, like blown in stuff from recycled (paper) products for example available in europe and the us that is environmentally friendly and cheap.

all the products available here now are priced out of range for the average thai or useless or both.

    anybody interested ?
