  1. i would recommend a trip to pai- in the regular little local bus from arcade with the door and windows open rattling over the mountain passes with local and baskets of produce etc,it is really nice this time of year and the lower temperatures there always bring the wife and myself together under the blanket at night.

nice serene landscapes ,hot springs (boiling egggs) and waterfall .a little hiking and a nice meal, always works for us. acteually i'm over due,,,,

    see you there!

  2. linseed oil might get mildew in this climate....then again if you take off your shoes as you should why put anything? it's teak after all

there is actual teak oil, although i cannot tell where to get it here -maybe the place with all the lumber going from tung hotel rd towards the superhighway,,,,,

  3. on chanklan rd coming in from tha phae rd siam bank is on the right followed by a tailor shop or two.then here is a photographer,he will make 12 pics for 180bt and they are nice.not the same day though.also in kad sun keaw 3rd or 4th floor a lot of machines, cheaper and quicker but since you always stick them on applications i find it worth while they kook better,

  4. i noticed the loss of my atm card at 7:30 pm at the same ksk mall.

it took me 10 minutes to find my banks branch check on my balance and temporarily close the account.all this without a account nr,bankbook or passport.i was then advised what to do get a new card the next day/holiday!

all this with a smile .

    incompetence- where?

  5. i have one myself and looked around for them too but do not recall any originally labeled.all the ones i saw were just one drab color.got mine from a junk dealer on 106 to lampun

By accident today I found a lot of at the backside of the local filling station.

be careful cutting them with grinding wheel/torch as the gases inside are very volatile!

  6. when going south on kotchasarn rd-kcoming from tha phae gate dk will be on the left after loi kroh rd-going in towards the book stores parking lot the mentioned place will be to the right.

if you really want to have a few solid recommendations on thai food places and what to order and eat there it would be better to get together with a moped and a map. send message if you want to.it will only take a couple of hrs.

    two links from recent blogs

Thanks for these 2 links but how reliable are the reviews ?

    1) Can i know Chanchao is a foreigner or a Thai ?

    2) The 1st page put me off and made me feel suspicious - Is he promoting for Starbucks ? In my country, Starbucks is better known as Suckbucks because their americano and freshly brewed coffee are knowned to be very light and tasteless, compared to Secret Recipe, Delifrance, Dome, San Francisco, which are all better. There are so many other cafes that sell better brewed coffee at much lower prices in Thailand or CM but yet he don't mention. He mention he has interest for cheaper places but why promote Starbucks ? I personally feel Black Canyon's coffee is better than Starbucks and muchg cheaper, especially for the ice-blendeds, nearly half the price of Suckbucks !!

    3) Anyway, I went thro all the 14 pages(?) and feel skeptical on the accuracy of his previews. I don't think he know the local food well in CM. Page 8, for instance, the "pork leg" rice, the "lady with cowhat" stall was not mentioned at all.

    4) There are so many food stalls selling the more popular and well-known local food, cheap but not mentioned by him. Why ? Instead, he promote some "food-courts", strange. There is a famous congee shop and another selling pig-ingredients soup not mentioned. How could a food lover know so little ? Has he stopped eating since 2004 :D

Anyway it's 2004 and i think the webmaster is no longer interested for updates; but the Suckbucks promotion is obvious.

No offence, Chanchao or anyone :jap:

sorry for outdated information i just thought it would be a good lead to some of your own sampling also the menu might be of interest.i offered a tour already but will not post all the places and dishes here.

personally i agree with the coffee thing as i always get cafe bolan(oldfashioned) thai coffee.

  8. almost off topic but then again,,,,,

a new german restaurant opened on lampun road 106 just before 121 intersection on the left side about 3.5 km from nong hoi .

    -zur schoenen au-

of the menu reasonably priced and buffett sundays 11.30 for around 180 if i remember it right

  9. the reason restaurants featured in the lonely planet are generally not he greatest is because just that they are r.i.p.(recommended in lonely planet)

it will bring success-expansion and the experience that the guests keep coming no matter what.

i have friends that got the bellyache after rattanas kitchen.....

fortunately most thaiplaces in chiang mai are good ,just check that thai people are eating there.a nice recommendation would be the little eatery next to dk bookstore ,to the right when in front of the bookstore.they have some of the best phadthai and also great pad krapao moo -the pork and basil leaf . open only in midday though you can eat there locally for 25 bt.

there were quite a number of threads on that topic -rtff-as usual--

  10. call this woman and explain to her on the phone what you want and for how long .her english is excellent -she has a car -legal background- and is a tour guide.she is nice and not looking for a boyfriend.

  11. i think that if you want them to see/treat you like a local you don't tip them.

did you follow the discussion about minimum wage in thailand?

it is the tourist's excessive throwing about of money in the first place that gave them the idea of overcharging falangs .

    :bah:

  12. ...............>>Tomorrow I think a lunch at the 30 baht buffet near the Mae Rim City Hall area is in order. Thursday the Southern style Kanom Jeen at Phuket Laikhram. Then the som tam at Ban>>....................................

while i think it is an excellent idea and hard to pull through i hope you will do it and i will watch your progress. i hope however that the adresses will be a lot more explicit (phonenr would be nice if applicable) than the above otherwise it just caters to the incrowd know-it-alls and leaves out the slightly dimwitted like myself.i have lived in chiang mai for 8 years but couldn't find any of the above from your description there.i remember searching on and off for pun pun outside sun dok temple as i could not know there would be a restaurant inside a temple for several years until i read about it on tv.i discovered a pletore of other restaurants in the process as i like to experiment just like you :rolleyes::rolleyes:

  13. it took me a while to get to it but it think now that the ice waters the beer down enough to hydrate the body .

plus of course it makes/keeps it cold ,if you drink thai beer straight you to have to add water later or wake up with a hangover. the body needs a certain amount of water to process the alcohol, ymmv,of course.

  14. i dare to differ-while lamduang ........

.......just my personal opinion of course.

Daret house a fine restaurant? I went there tonight and the chicken potato curry was basically water with a few strips of chicken and potatoes. The worst curry I've had in Thailand. May be the other stuff on the menu is good but I can't fathom going back to check when there are so many other good restaurants around.

i have to admit that i don't go there much any more ,just an occasional fruit shake or lassi but the people eating there seem happy enough.it is not really authentic thai food to my taste but all my visiting friends liked it.B)

  15. i tried it and can tell you that it is obvious that it makes you feel stronger all around but as soon as you introduce t. into your body it stops making it's own and you either take it all the time or feel really flat.i find strenuous exercise a better way to get similar results although it is a pain in the ass. literally.

  16. i dare to differ-while lamduang is or has been famous for kao soi it is out of the way and the quality of the product has diminished a lot.the place on charonpratet is a tourist trap and their overpriced kao soi's are not the real thing either. personally i would recommend a small vegetarian place -the third business coming from chiang mai gate on the left side of suriwong rd. also at khun chern as part of the lunch buffet on soi 17 nimmaheimin rd.-while i am not a vegetarian at all to me kao soi tastes much cleaner and happier without the meat.in any case it is important though to only order it in places that specialize in it - sell a lot and make it fresh every day.a few of my friends complained bitterly after having had it at daret for example although daret house is a fine restaurant otherwise and has excellent green curry for example.

just my personal opinion of course.
