Thanks for your replys all.
The final result after posting on the Isarn forum is......................................................
We are most likely getting a cab all the way there. The cost is the same though of course its slower at least its certain ( if the driver is awake and sobber )

Thanks everybody. Some helpful replies. For those who are interested I considered the Air asia flights to Ubon Ratchathani at 7.35 am but thought that a 6.10 landing might be cutting the conection fine. Yes there is a Thai air at 12.30 ( all others booked up now ) at 2500 baht one way per person . That leaves the Coach. Whilst I am prepared to book the coach ( and I am sure they are more frequent than I found in my original post ) Wifey will not hear of it. Her view is that on new years eve everbody will be travelling so the coachess will all be delayed by many hours. I cant see how this causes delays. I think that if we get tickets now we get on the bus. Wifey thinks that the bus companies will lie like b****s and overbook and we will never get on the bus. Wifey's track record of gettting round Thailand is questionable to say the least to the point where even natives of the North East as they switch to their coloquial Lao dialect, in a cab for instance, inhale deeply and say to her laughing " Your fallang husband is correct you should never have come this way/done that" etc .
On balance on the basis that if there is a chance she is right and we end up standing in a scrum at the bus station I think we will try for airasia on the day or get a cab all the way there. Various relatives having been informed of the cab option are already planning on getting a lift ( oh joy ).
Thanks all

Dear all I have read in some posts that for a couple of people it can be economical to get a cab rather than fly into Khon Kaen/Ubon Ratchathani/Udon Thani. Of course I know the coach is easy but this time i land at 6.10am and the coach as far as i can make out soes not depart mo chit till 22.00 to Roi Et.
What do you recon. If so does anyone have any reconmendations for cab companies/drivers?
Thank you

We arrive Thai air at 6.10 am and there is an air asia flight onwards to Ubon Ratchatani at 07.35 am. What do youy recon our chances are?
Thanks

The few bars that don't rip off the customers by over charging and padding the bills, have friendly girls who don't hassle customers for drinks, play good music at a sensible volume , and have staff who are not ignoring you because they are watching TV, etc are consequentially jammed packed, even in the current recession, and the rest struggle to survive.
Live and let live, and let them get on with it, I guess........
I seldom visit Patts nowadays . When I do its just to see some old friends. I used to have a favorite bar , didnt we all. The last few times I went to that bar the moment I sat down everyone would get a drink in, or starty hassling for a drink. Good old Richard is back! Within a few minutes the tab would be in four figures and by the time I was finishing my first beer some staff had ordered their second. The last time this happened and I had not agreed to buy anyone a beer I never went back. Now they watch me stroll bye and I never stop . I really dont think they get it. Pitty really .

I would suggest something more high end. I stayed in a small guest house/hotel for a few nights last year and was involved in an unpleasent row when the night porter/person tried to insist on logging my wifes id card details though I made the booking in both our names. Wifey was not inpressed at the mans presumptions and what he said in Thai does not bear repeating.

Hey Guys,
I tired some new fertilizer found that is organic, this stuff is great, about half the cost of UREA and yeilds were unbelievable. I cant wait for the next rice season to check the results again. On the rice I got almost double the yields. I did 10 rai with UREA and 10 ria with this stuff. I gave some to my wifes uncle and he used it on it chili, he got 4 times the yield he usually gets. I still cant believe it. I just submitted some to a university with a professor and he is going to do certified results for me.
Hi Eric , OK I got the land you have the seeds and will buy the crop. So what about the fertilzer. What is it where do we get it?

that soi 15 is a little creepy late at night. their have been a few gang-beatings up there. yeah the tourist police
are useless. the one time i went to their office they wouldn't get off their as_ses and just directed me to the
regular police station. And where are the TPV'S? local tourist police are only interested in prosecuting farangs.
My tailors brother is tourist police but I can not say I have ever had to use his services. I would like to say though that I have found the "falang" volunteers ( who always seem to get a bad press ) pretty clued up, and as helpful as they can be, in the past.

ps
I too vote with my feet at AngelWitch; taking my wallet elsewhere. I should add that sadly I recently got clobbered for an insane bill in one of my favorite little bars where I have been hanging out for ten tears or so. The rational seems to be that good old Richard always buys rounds for everyone, with no murmour, and so must do so everytime whether he consents or not. As I cant sit there anymore without a toilet role of chits appearing in my bin and as having a row defeats the purpose of having a pleasurable evening I now go elsewhere.

A similar thing happened to me in a beer bar , a month or so back.
I ordered a drink, they brought the wrong one, I didn't touch it, and they admitted their mistake, and then replaced it with the right one.
When I came to pay my bill, both drinks were on the tab. I complained, and after lot of argument they removed it.
It seems to be a regular scam - I guess they get away with it a lot, so they think it's clever.
But of course it is very short sighted. I used to be a regular customer at that bar, but have never been back since.
BTW there was a thread on AW a while back where a guy was ripped off by a girl he bought out, and when he compalined to the management, they told hiim to get lost. Doesn't sound like a very nice place.
Indeed there was Mobi.
I am surprised though that I am often told by those " in the know " that Tom Dick or Harry or whoever runs these places are top men , honest and friendly to a fault. Frankly I see little evidence of this. I have met and corresponded with a few managers of entertainment venues who seemed to know what they were doing and were doing a job working hard at their business. They are part of their communities and settled in for the long run. It appears to me that there are many other managers who back in farrang land could not organize a piss up in a brewery and are doing little better in organizing a piss up in a go go Thailand. My theory falls appart though because these fairly high end establishments with oodles of staff expenses and I guess substantial investment , if not going strong, are still paying the owners/shareholders a living. I wonder if in many businesses the fallang manager has any actual influence or use. Is he just window dressing. Is there a great turnover amongst some of thses mupets?

What are the consequences if my wife overstays for a short time because I cannot raise the cash?
Would they really be that hard on a young family?
Please stop panicing .
1. On no account let her leave to remain expire. If you do you you have to apply for further leave from abroad.
2. The rule is dead simple . You are still together. SHE did not have recourse to public funds for the last two years. YOU are entitled to public funds for YOURSELF.
3. Get the application in by hook or by crook. Its 99% certain to be granted
