  1. I don't care what nationality committed this crime. This is a petty shoplifting case in a town with ridiculous levels of prostitution, high murder rate and drug related issues. There was things that I witnessed and heard about when I live in Pattaya back in the day that made me seriously question my stay there, but a couple of Farangs pinching cosmetics from a corner shop would rate pretty low on my "get me the <deleted> out of this place" meter.

  2. I think looking for another location to settle in isn't a bad idea at all. It isn't hard to leave Pattaya behind these days, and I was once a fan of the place.  However, you may be like me and be looking for a Thailand that isn't there anymore. I used to love long stays in BKK and Pattaya back in the day. The assault on the senses is still there, along with the food, climate and most other things I love about Thailand, but what always made Thailand for me in the cities was the people more than anything. Really did deserve the title LoS before-Smart phones and mass tourism had taken its toll.

I haven't even spent much time in Thailand in recent years, but it's a drug, I must come back. Maybe I will never get that feeling again and there isn't another SEA country that excites me enough. Might even try the sticks. Only spent a few days in Isaan in all my time there... Keep us updated OP. I like your posts as you come across as sincere most of the time. GL.

  3. How strict are the rules on visa runs/border bounces these days? Is the one bounce rule actually enforced or are the authorities just cracking down on serial offenders? Would doing two runs for instance be risky and simply not worth the risk of possible issues? When I used to come for long stays in Thailand (03-07 period) there wasn't any real restrictions to visa runs, or at least it wasn't enforced if there was any and I have only had a few brief trips to Thailand in the last few years so never really had to adapt. Bit of a last minute thing so i don't have time to apply for any visas before my trip to Thailand.

    Thanks in advance.

BMI is an outdated formula its ok for the average public but not for people who exercise and have some muscle. It should be banned because it really gives a wrong result for healthy active people. For the average non active person its ok.

It works fine for most active healthy people also - but that tends to be for those who concentrate more on cardio workouts rather than building muscles.

  5. Note that the OP's title is: " Nana, a terrible place to live"

Whilst I don't agree with him in it being a terrible place to live, I can understand why some people would in the longterm prefer to live a less seedy part of Sukhumvit or Dusit etc Especially when a girlfriend/wife and children is concerned and entertaining more sheltered family members from back home. I used to live in Pattaya so BKK red light districts feels natural to me, plus I have no children. Can totally understand why people in different situations in life would think similarly to the OP.

  6. The dress sense of farangs in Thailand is a long term gripe of mine. Between the Chang Mai elephant pants/hippie garb, the Pattaya Chang wifebeater and flip flop combo, the thuggish bare chested and football shorts look and the Eastern European socks and sandles combo and I have had enough. It is almost to offensive levels at this point. I give Thais credit in the this department. Despite most having less money to spend on clothing (compared to the average farang) they usually at least show a little style.

Just a guess Soi, but maybe you got your degree 30+ years ago and maybe it is applicable to your chosen/past profession. I think you have misunderstood the term Mickey Mouse. Its a fairly new term in relation to the growing number of degrees that have been created where it has been shown that many of the degrees attained were not used for their relevant field. So if you read my post more carefully you may have noted I used Media production and english lit as two examples. If you had said you said your degree was in engineering and you were a consultant in engineering well that would not be what is regarded as a mickey mouse course. Hope that is a bit more clearer for you but if not google the term Mickey Mouse Degree and educate yourself a bit more.

There are a lot of degrees that are limited in regards to practicality within a working environment, but at least having a degree shows employers that an applicant was able to commit to a long term endeavor and complete it. A decent percentage of people choose to study a subject they enjoy/have an interest in rather than one that will secure a direct career path. Many students also are not sure what career they want to settle down with in the future due mostly to limited life experiences before choosing a subject.

I had a vasectomy many years ago when I was about your age. My family doctor didn't like the idea because he knew we would eventually divorce and when I remarried, my new wife would want kids. I told him that two children were what was keeping me in this bad marriage and I never wanted to get in this position again. He gave me two options, one was to cut the tubes, overlap them and tie them together. The other option was to snip a piece out and tie off the ends. That way would not be reversible. I chose the non reversible option and I have never regretted my choice.

But you already had 2 children at that point. OP as far as I can tell doesn't have any. Vasectomy is a bit extreme for his circumstance imo, but admittedly he will need a like minded partner he can trust if he goes down the female contraception route.

  9. Sounds like a horrible idea at 25. Without coming across as condescending there are other options in the form of condoms for casual hook ups and contraceptive implants and pills if you have a partner and do not want to have children still.  Vasectomy reversal is not guaranteed and your  ideas and plans will probably change over the years. At 25 I was thinking similar thoughts as you, 7 years on and you know what, having some kids in the future is something I do want.

  10. I love the loudness personally, apart from when it's that Thai rave music getting blasted. Not a fan.

Places like Soho and Camden High Street was always my favourite parts of my city. Loud and lots of hustle and bustle.  I can understand people from more quiet backgrounds having issues with the levels of noise.

I so agree about the "fire alarm music" that gets played in most gogos! It's one of the many things that puts me off  Walking Street apart from an occasional foray. It seems that in most cases, the bar plays its choice of music rather than the customers'.

Having said that, TQ isn't quite the only place that plays the music I like - I rather suspect that @thaibeachlovers is another old fart.....like me! However, it must be said that there are places in Patts that play my sort of music...seek and ye shall find :drunk:

Yes the Thai rave music/noise is not a personally favourite of mine and gets played alot more than it used to. I think the only people that genuinely enjoy it is some of the dancers who are high on meth.

No, they've been all gone for at least 7 years. Or perhaps experience inevitably leads to the same disillusionment. ;)

That said, I think a lot of the best have realized they don't need to bother w/ working in a horrid beer bar and are now found online via the apps.

I would go along with that. Then again getting involved with dating/online dating is better in BKK and  from there Samui is a better option for a trip. Best places to go now for hook ups in Pattaya probably somewhere like iBar. Lots of cute girls and a lot of them come in with their own money (freebie potential extremely high) Gogo bars still have a lot of hotties for those who prefer that scene. It's not all bad. The lack of Chang beer wifebeaters was a pleasant surprise. Just nostalgia issues more than anything for me.

Yeah well, I live here.  I am always surprised by guys that claim to live here or actually do and they have no idea where to go to find great ladies.  Maybe they should leave their rooms once in awhile.   Sorry if you cannot find the young hotties there are certainly plenty in town now if you know where to go.

That's the thing mate. You didn't really need to look much before to meet some petite and easy going hotties. Now outside of gogo bars in walking street I can honestly say there really wasn't that much to get excited about. I used to love the casualness and charm of a lot of the girls in Pattaya and is still the only place I have ever entered the p4p scene.

  14. Just had a short trip to Pattaya (was going to stay longer) after not visiting the place for many years. Not going to go into the same shit that has been said for years: pricing, empty condos, empty bars etc.

I did notice sanuk levels have dropped, but the biggest disappointment is the ladies. Not only are cute girls becoming a dying breed outside of the gogo scene but the p4p in general is more hardcore now. I am not a seasoned monger, still fairly young and prefer to have some fun with the girls rather than it all feeling like a cold transaction that one would find elsewhere. Bar scene in regards to the girls was better 10-15 years ago. No doubt. I can't imagine anyone who lived/visited the place back then not to feel the same. Not a doom and gloom post as things are just not catering to me as much anymore and that's ok. Will revisit some years in the future to see how things have moved on again.

People with an education can always go to school in the US for more education.

There you go commenting on restaurants you have never been to. No facts, no nothing. Are you a world class restaurant critic that can predict the quality of restaurants who have no idea about or have never visited?

Hard to miss people that cannot speak the same language as you. Can you speak Isaan?

Only garbage here is when you post short of any actual facts or first hand knowledge.

It doesn't make you look very smart

I might not be very smart, but I wouldn't say I am a moron neither, but I certainly can spot one fairly fast.

What you are describing is a Thai woman from the rural area with no education. If your wife had a law degree, do you think she would be sitting around idle missing her village or doing something useful in the USA?

If your wife had her own new car and could drive herself around anywhere she could go, would she be missing her village?

We have over 25 restaurants in our metro area of less than 80,000 people. No way to miss Thai food.

Also have 2 Buddhist temples in town. No way to miss religion

Have video messaging, can talk to and see family whenever we want. No missing them here.

Missing the Thai weather? Really? The heat, humidity, mosquitoes, air pollution, monsoons, chronic floods, droughts? That is one thing we certainly do not miss one bit.

If you married an educated, smart, modern day Thai woman, she would not have any issues living in the west among educated people. She would have educated friends. Do educated things like go out to lunch, the gym, social outings, etc.

If you married someone that go homesick, well, it is hard to assimilate in any country that you cannot understand the language, culture, have no way to learn or get around etc. They wanted a better live, not a secluded, uneducated life.

What exactly did your wife give up to move to the USA with you? Was she a land baron? Giant house with a pool? Couple of Mercedes? Man you tell so many stories you get mixed up.

Many Thai women will marry anyone they can to escape their own personal poverty. Some of these uneducated women believe all farangs are rich, even if they are told 1000 times otherwise.  When they move to a foreign land and find out the truth of course they would be upset and so would you.

Everything you describe about your own wife is 100% accurate. You do get lonely and homesick if you cannot assimilate in the USA. However, that is not every Thai now is it?

You try to paint the whole world, everything you believe from your own mind short of any facts at all. There are tons of successful Thai's here in my area? How many large restaurants did you say you owned near the beach?

You know only what you know. You do not know a damn thing but people you do not know, yet you act like you know everything. We can say the same thing for you moving back to the USA. You did not provide a life where your wife could assimilate and get along so you had NO choice but go back to Thailand or get divorced.

Four years in the USA and your wife was prepared for anything. You did not sent her to school or do anything else.

Back to the village you go, except this time we know the real reason why you are in Thailand.

Education - having a law degree from a University in Thailand probably wouldn't mean much in the states and struggling to find a decent employment opportunity especially with having English as a second language is understandable. I just looked at the top 200 universities in the world (not one was a Thai uni)

Restaurants - so there is 25 in the area you speak of, and unless we are talking Michelin star level then knowing western restaurants like I do it's probably quite mediocre to awful.

Missing Thai weather - nice tropical climate. Understandable

Missing family - video messaging is not the same social interaction as being with people (shouldn't need explaining to an adult)

Just a few garbage points you made in your hilariously bloated and terrible post.

"Pattaya" is also too broad a term for good recommendations.

Yes I forgot that Pattaya is a sprawling metropolis going into the millions popluation wise  /sarcasm

Thanks for the more sensible replies. Going to go with finding a reasonable place to crash and set up my own net connection with AIS. Cheers.
