1. Looking for an apartment in Pattaya. Needs to be clean, ethernet connection with decent download and at the bare minimum 1mbps upload. 10,000 baht a month mark or so. Recommendations welcomed. Thanks in advance.

2. All jokes aside, I would have just walked off and left him to it

I would have loved to do that, but it meant a 6 KM walk home.

No way was I doing that just for this prick.

He has probably changed my view of all long termers in Thailand, and I really don't like that.

But now I am suspicious.

I think next time I will just flatten the idiot.

This guy was probably the worst farang I have ever met in all my 5 years in Thailand.

The only reason I didn't smack this prick up and down the road was the owner of the bar doesn't need the bad publicity.

If I see him again, I am not going to be so accommodating.

Yea, rite mate, I`ll give it some agro, put the boot in, right.

This is the pot calling the kettle black.

You are also the type of farang I would l hate to meet or have as a neighbor. Just another ex-pat who is unable to lose that western British aggression and not able to adapt to the softly, softly attitudes in Thailand, not realising that you are no longer in the UK shouting all the odds in the pubs with your mates.

In situations like these, in which I have been unfortunate to have come across on my travels here over the years here, I just say; well; all the best, smile, then turn my back and walk away or go and sit in another part of the bar, it`s that simple. No one was forcing you at gunpoint to speak with that other genius. If you are unable to do that, not able to control your emotions and your temper, than you are a worse thug than the guy you are complaining about.

Get a life and let things like this wash over your head, other wise one day you are going to bring a lot of trouble upon yourself here. Thrust me on this one.

Indeed. That type of expat I try to stay away from. Not like back in the UK where most bar brawls or fights generally end up with a black eye and maybe a night in a cell. In Thailand things go from calm to ultra violence way too fast. Better off being around more level headed people imo.

3. Posted this earlier although either been removed or didn't work: he is a northerner not London. What does a South Londoner look like ? Oh and Bermondsey and Millwall are South East London.

Those places are south of the Thames, so therefore can be called areas in South London. If you are going by postcodes or to strictly to map then yes, SE. No need to be that pedantic at posts made with a humourous tone though is there mate?

4. Apologies for the misunderstanding, I'll take a look when I get a better reception

I could have been an ice hockey star

and we owe it all to the goons

Of course, Spike et al were amazing, leading to the young ones (rik Mayall RIP) & on to Del-Boy falling over at the bar, as game changers in British comedy. We do also rate Canadians as having a great sense of humour too

I could have been an ice hockey star

john candy, martin short, akroyd, eugene levy, catherine ohara, andrea martin, etc, all great. can you imagine how much fun canucks can have on a weekend driving down to some american bar and taking the piss?

Yeah there are a lot of stand up comedy bars in the states, they are quite famous for it actually. Better be good though because they are not shy generally to boo off lame comedians.

5. There are a lot of dodgy foreign types residing in Thailand, most of us know that OP. Just use your judgement and gut feeling with people, it is usually enough. In fact if you took all of the foreign dodgy sorts and the exchange rate elitists out of Thailand then there would be a serious drop in the percentage of farang expats.

What's an exchange rate elitist?

Someone who moves to another country where they can obtain a favorable exchange rate that essentially allows them to behave in an elitist manner that they can not in their home country. Plenty of those <deleted> about. They are about as embarrassing as the flip flop chang vest brigade.

Thought the exchange rates over the last few years have been pretty poor to be honest.

They are compared to ten or so years ago, but that's not the point.

7. I'd say that it really does depend on what your definition of a loser, jerk or misfit is.

If it's anything like these five for starters, then I'd say the percentage is particularly high.

1. The guy who goes to a bar, pulls a sex worker then proceeds to hold doors open, pull out chairs and purchase roses like he's courting

2. The guy who is perfectly willing to resort to fisticuffs to either defend the "honour" of his barfine or to ensure that she doesn't run off with someone she finds more attractive

3. The guy who genuinely expects the woman 3 or 4 notches above his "pull grade" to be attracted to his money but to stay with him when times get tight because she REALLY loves him

#3, thanks to the caste system in Thailand, he will never meet never mind pull some bird 3 or 4 grades above him.

He can of course delude himself that the Baccara hottie/pretty is with him for his charm, personality and witty conversational skills, usually true 'til the money runs out.

Then its back to farangsville to punch out hub caps on a production line for the next twelve months, where even the girls in farangland ignore him.

Somehow these hapless fools actually believe that on arrival at Swampy they are zapped with a hansum man ray as they pass through immi.

Speaking from experience are we?

8. Actually all it means is the same as the falung fruit which is white inside and has a slightly coarse texture just like Western skin as opposed to white Asian skin which is silky smooth. It's not an insult just a pure observation.

The term farang actually goes back in Asia to the middle east describing the first Europeans they come across, the Franks.

Do I like being called farang? I like it slightly more than being labelled a barang. I don;t care though really. Only time it is slightly annoying is when you come across an <deleted> who is over using the word. It is usually some ignorant hillbilly, so really there is no reason to feel offended.

9. OP just look at how the birth rates have fallen in the last decade or so amongst Thai women. That should tell you that women in Thailand are being more wise when it comes to starting families. There is a new generation of Thai women who do not feel like they need a partner and also a generation who when they were young could see many Thai women struggling to bring up a family alone with no assistance from the father or the state.

I guess a lot of Thai women will think about dating or meeting with a foreigner at some point, but to be fair when you look at the pool of foreign men in Thailand I should imagine that puts a lot of them off. Not exactly the best catches ever... and when a handsome level headed foreign man moves to Thailand he will be inundated with ridiculous amounts of female interest and therefor usually be taken.

10. I am not a teacher but I also think that I come form a superior country, what's your problem with that ?

My country leads the work and I am proud about it, the rest of the world should respect our citizens because I wonder what the world would be without us...

hahaha awesome.. I think you have something stuck in your butt, your own head maybe.

Exchange rate heroes and people who love to move thousands of miles away to play the rich country card. This new breed of expats sounds great.. can only imagine the levels of resentment growing amongst Thais who already have to deal with enough elitism in their own society.

11. It is time to crack down on these law breakers Thai doesn't need these people The Expat Community will be more high class

This a great idea and will improve Thailand for all

I am glad this is being done

Thanks

More high class...........

Greetings xxxxxfromPattaya clap2.gifcheesy.gif

It´s ok if the Thais start to enforce their laws, but please, completely overhaul the whole Visa system then. Even if you´re legal it´s not really "fair". The Visa based on marriage is a good example- that´s a joke!! 90 days, no land, no rights, annual renew, ridiculous. If they really mean it they would have the chance to clean up and then modernise the whole system now. I hope things will get better soon, but there´s not much hope I guess. Don´t think the army is interested to make Thailand fairer or more open to foreigners (the root of all evil smile.png )

+1

These guys are so amusing. Thinking they're better than someone who in and outs on tourist visas. Really man, Thailand would be far better off without a bunch of old, drunk, useless retirees.

Most of them are elitists who had to move to a border line third world country to feel elite. Back in the city or wall street these guys would be chicken feed, but that exchange rate into Thailand goes straight to most of their heads. Really sad.

12. Actually I think the reasons for this anti-Americanism are dated now. Americans in general are waking up to the fact that it is NOT number one in most things, except for things like obesity, incarceration rates, and gun mania.

Most of the actual hate will mostly only come form middle eastern countries. Other places around the world people will be more along the lines of jealousy with their feeling towards the USA. If I could do it all again I probably would made a move in early age from Europe to the states tbh. What a country.

13. I'm Scottish, i absolutely despise 99% of Scottish people and i hate Scotland as a country. We have a huge chip on our shoulder, we seem to think "everyone loves us" yet we are ignorant, unhealthy, violent vermin.

We like to tell everyone how nice we are before stabbing them, we tell everyone we invented everything when in fact we didn't, other did before us, we just lie.

Good rant, but not as good as this one:

14. I reckon that it depends on what sort of monthly budget you are going to be happy with.

Personnally I would be happy with 120k baht per month given I own my own condo. The OP was happy with 100k Baht/month. 2 million dollar investment returning 4% and you are looking at 200k baht/month ... roughly.

I would rather retire 5-10 years earlier than chase another million dollars.

The stupidity of people thinking you need two million dollars under their mattress before they can retire is mind blowing. Yes, they may require 60 million baht over 50 years but they certainly don't need it today.

500k baht is still 500k baht and someone contemplating retireing early should think long and hard about how they spend that sort of cash. Especially when the scheme is not thoroughly tested and appears to come with dubious reliability.

Personally, I think an ED Visa... especially if you have some intention of actually attending some of the lessons and learning a bit, would be a much better option for me at the moment. Not sure I will do this for up to 8 years though.

2 million IMO is not a large sum.to base retirement on though is it?

Sent from my GT-I9500 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

So one assumes by one of your remarks you have already made your first million cash in the bank then ?

Actually if talk to any decent financial people the USD 2.0 million number is the one most thrown around by them as regards the sort of sum that is needed ?

I know my financial/retirement planning which was done by a professional also showed I needed about 1.9 million in my piggy bank to ensure a stress free retirement, and I can assure you the person who did all this for me is far from stupid, so who I am inclined to believe as to who is stupid you ? Or a professional financial planner ? My money is on the financial guy

What kind of financial people are they then? It obviously comes down to lifestyle, what age one is retiring and what other kinds of income the person in question will also be receiving. Two million dollars in the bank or invested in property with a pension for some would be a dream retirement. For a jet setter playboy type who has been used to purchasing a new Yacht every other year and driving around in super cars would probably seem like a near poverty retirement.

It obviously comes down to the individual and their lifestyle. Unless you like paying financial types to give you an arbitrary number. They sure don't mind the easy money.

number

15. On the priority ladder of what laws could do with being enforced a little tighter in Thailand I think harassing foreigners who are living in Thailand and supporting themselves and in most cases spending decent money should be quite low. Enforcing laws more rigidly on murder, rape, corruption, prostitution, labour abuse would be a better place to start. I only mention those because there does indeed seem to be quite a fair amount of room for improvement on those matters. After those are improved then maybe start worrying about some foreigners who are staying in the kingdom doing online work or having a long term holiday. Just my opinion of course.

16. I honestly do not understand the typists on this message and on thaivisa generally.

Only two of the 23 comments I read were vaguely ok with Thailand; the rest were profoundly dissatisfied and had lots of ideas how it is bad.

Can those typists tell me why, if they dislike Thailand so much, why do they have anything to do with it? Especially why want to live here? And, with every complaint about Thailand faults there are concomitantly a similar number complaining that the visa rules will not allow them to stay here.

It seems more than a little wacky strongly to complain about a place and also to complain that rules keep them from living here. Saying, "Thailand, you are a terrible place and also terrible for keeping me out of Thailand."

Usually, asserting that kind of contradiction inside the same brain is called madness. I could be wrong.

I know that venting is helpful sometimes, but venting as a way of life seems strange.

The problem you are having in understanding that, is because you try to see Thailand as if were a single person. Your assumption which causes your misunderstanding, is that because two people are Thai they both have the same feelings and goals - and in essence, that reflects a type of racism on your part. If you cannot regognize the different aspects of Thailand, and the reasons behind them, then you should not be shaming others for doing so.

Sheesh, why does everything these days you say get deemed 'racist' Is it the hip new trend? Nothing he mentioned is racist. Guess some are still watching too much CNN or FOX???

Oh the war on racism is a very popular trend in many western countries. Not so much to protect the feelings of people from certain ethnic groups but more to create an inferiority complex into the minds of certain races. Typical brainwashing and social engineering, standard shit but with a very powerful tool in television.

17. These young people really make me wonder where this world is heading.

Id hate to be around in another couple of generations when these little b@stards have children that have children, I mean we are talking about little pr!ckz here with no concern for anyone except themselves.

The world would be a much better place without human beings, pity a couple of super nations will need to nuke em up to eradicate this dirty filthy vile creature & damage the earth beyond repair to get rid of the human.....theres no answer here........ and to think, if only parents could stop and teach their offspring a little respect.

Sorry if this sounds bad, but were their parents arsonists?? Who bred these armholes ?? I do understand some slip under the net BUT here the kids get a free style upbringing.

I will never forget a local Thai lady saying to me if my son gets killed on his motorbike we will make another son.

This family values--right and wrong --home care love with discipline. without this you get morons-armholes-thinking they are Arnies/Rambo's.

Thai soap opera do NOT help with their angry fighting rhetoric. Kids think it's normal behavior.

Schools give you tuition, home gives you behavior correction.

When I was a kid my school inflicted discipline, as well as at home, BUT for sure my school wielded the big stick and pointed "most" in the right direction. I thank them for that............thumbsup.gif

yep, they lost it when thecuddly doo gooders. rolled in, can't cane the kids, can't smack em and don't speak harshly at em, supposed to praise the ones burning the schools down for their creative initiative.

we oughta burn the doo gooders and bring back the cane, quick smart, then call up most the parents and cane them first.

there needs to be new laws to stop red necks from breeding, about 80% of the community should be newked to stop the reproducing, so many freaks in society these days! it's the only way! short of a nuclear holocaust that is.

Most parents and a hell of a lot of schools in Thailand beat children, that can also have the affect of making the children grow up to be violent adults. Obviously methods like that can help in disciplining children but it is not as if caning children will end up with a well behaved orderly society necessarily, if only life was that simple eh?

18. So far in the past few months there was a crackdown of varying degrees on the following:

• 30-day visa exempt stamps
• tourist visas
• NON-ED visas
• multi NON-B visas with no work permit
• medical extensions
For the love of God I can't understand why people with multi entry NON-Os happily cheer the crackdown. Those visas are clearly not intended for permanent stay (that's what 1-year extensions for) and this is why you have to do a border run every 90 days. You are abusing the system in the same way people on back to back tourist visas did, especially if you use the multi NON-O visa to circumvent the requirement of having funds in the Thai bank.
I don't understand the shadenfreud either, but you may want to rethink your second point. Aside from it being factually flawed, if one has obtained a non-O multiple-entry visa due to marriage/family, they are in no way "abusing" anything by leaving and re-entering the country multiple times.

They are following the rules in order to be able to stay with loved ones.

You're whining.

Today's rules. If tomorrow the authorities decide you need 5 million in the bank I don't want to see you post here with your idea of fairness, right? thumbsup.gif

Indeed. Not to mention one of the charms of Thailand in the past was how chilled out the place was. The more bureaucracy infringes on tourist the more that charm declines. Your typical TV elitist will slate lower end tourists, back backers etc. But I remember meeting two backpackers who were buming about in Thailand after graduating from Imperial. They will probably be able to afford quite a few holidays thorught out their lifes.

I know my initial interest in Thailand was that of an exotic, beautiful, laid back but somewhat wild country that did not follow so many conventional laws that the west does. Just wonder if they change too much how many people will start looking at alternatives.
