Skype have several different options. Calls to mobile, landlines, unlimited time etc. He could be on a different package. If you have an old package like I do, it is sometimes cheaper than new packages which come out.

I think most people would consider $5 per month cheap. Value for money is a different matter. I sometimes go months without needing to call, but I have peace of mind I can when I want to.

Can I ask what's the advantage, other than a small saving in subscribing for 12 months instead monthly? Have you been a long time subscriber previously? The reason I ask, is that I see this a lot where said company goes bust or doesn't live up to expectations and people are locked in.
