  1. yes we have tuna but they are very small 1 to 5 kg

the shown photo is a eastern little tuna or also known as Bonito. In the local waters there are few types of Tuna all small: Bonito, yellowfin, Albacore, Tongol, Skip-jack, Blue fin. Further offshore you may get into larger tuna.

  2. 18lb rainbow trout Shuswap lake B.C Canada. Tail walking deep diving :D on 8lb line small 2" rapala imitation fry. best eating freshwater fish. Sorry I don't have a picture as it was twenty years ago.

Salt water 12kg to 20kg long tail tuna from the rocks NSW Australia, as shown in the photo. 10kg line with circle hook and small yakka.

    Great fish!

Why can I never catch anything like this around Phuket? There are supposed to be long tail tuna in the water here. Is the water around Phuket very over fished? I have to keep resorting to freshwater stocked lakes. I'd much rather catch a wild tuna...

So what's a yakka? Is that a bait fish? I take it you use lead? What depth do you need to fish etc?

    Thanks,

Yakka is a small baitfish also know as Yellowtail, scad, in the local markets you will see tables full of them about 4" to 6" inch long.

Gar fish also know as Ballyhoo work well. Use a circle hook on a 80lb 10ft leader (fluorocarbon is the best) no weights: place the hook behind the head just through the skin as any deeper will cause the fish to die quickly. Above the leader put a small Styrofoam float or balloon. You have to be in the right location, deep water near rock structures, offshore, etc. You may not get tuna as other large palgics will take live bait. Be prepared, a good rod and overhead reel is quite essential, fishing for game fish land based means you can't use the boat to chase the fish when it does its first run. A shimano TLD25 is minimum with 10kg line, lots of it. :)

Here in Thailand far offshore you may find large tuna occasionally but you have a better chance of getting sailfish or marlin.

Off the rocks here in Phuket I have hooked up and lost one large sailfish, after three days of fishing, running the rig described, except the day I got hooked up I was using a 12" queen fish for a live bait.

  4. This comment in a separate forum enticed me to start a new Topic.

Quote: "thefalang" I'd love to see the police enforce the traffic laws and ticket motorists for moving violations (driving on the wrong side of the road, improper passing, speeding, failure to yield the right of way, drunk driving, reckless driving, etc). These are traffic violations that I witness almost every day in the Nai/Rawai area.

    My response:

The chaotic synchronicity of traffic flow in this country is a mind bender for westerners, once you get used to it, the flow is quite effective and other than the reckless and driving drunk I regard the road rules as a functioning system.

Learn to behave like a local: unless you have an accident smile and be thankful the accident did not occur.

How can you expect a developing country with the volume of traffic and assemble of sidecars and other dilapidated modes of transport to adhere to western road rules. The country would come to a grinding halt. There would be riots.

ok i am having a bit of a laugh here....

  5. :D excuse me I was going to comment then changed my mind, ok I will make a comment, price for bars anywhere on the island depend on the owners state of mind/bank account. If you are buying an existing operating business the keymoney/rent price involved will reflect the success of the bar. A successful bar will not be cheap. Vise-versa.

50k month would be low for good location with 60-100sq. meters floor space. 1m to 5m key money

10k month go-go bar 10sq. meters one dancing pole ten bar stools, block of wood to drive nails into :) , icebox, shared stereo system side by side with 20+ other identical bars. 100k to 500k key money

be careful, make sure the contract is bombproof, ie have a reputable lawyer check it.

  6. Next door Chalong Tesco If your going towards Tesco from Chalong circle you will see the 2nd business before the entrance to Tesco there is a small bakery they make good buns and bread. 076381458 "The Bakery Soft Buns"

  7. This flower is meant to bring luck to people born on Tuesday. I am not able to put a name to it as we can't remember, but, I remember when we bought it it was for me because i was born on Tuesday. I have seen it bloom once in two years. I believe it is a native flower.

  8. There is still a very high majority of farang that live here that have not yet experienced any crime against themselves, or, their property.

When this changes, maybe something will happen (though, I won't hold my breath).

Last year i personally apprehended a burglar in my business 2:30am who was high on Ya baa. Fortunately she was alone and submitted with out a struggle. I called my wife who called the police, who arrived within 15 minutes. The burglar was young lady whom had worked briefly as a server for me. She was taken into Chalong station where we spent the better part of the night filing a report. Over the next few weeks she and her family appealed to have the charges dropped. With a word to the police it could of all gone away for her, we would of received some compensation. She was addicted to Ya Baa and I we felt this would not of helped her. Facing her actions would maybe give her a chance. We met with a community service worker for young offenders and drug related criminals. The worker asked if we would accept a reduced sentence if she were to enter a drug rehab program. Obligingly we did. She did serve time and went into the program. What has become of her i do not know.

On a lesser note I had a small bungalow built, got three estimates and went with the middle one, halfway through the construction I realized they were doing a botched job and told them so. They quit without completeing the job. I hired a new crew to finish, to make a long story short In the end after threats of going to court I ended up going to court. The court heard the case and ordered the builder to repay the 100,000B in payments over a two year period. With the first payment starting two months after the court date and a minimum of 10,000 baht first payment. He has paid.

Some people claim the police and the courts don't work here. Its not true. In many cases they have there hands full or there really is no way to catch a burglar/murderer/rapist unless caught red-handed.They slip into the night never to be seen again.

In many cases community response/assistance will assist in catching criminals but it is not as easy as the cop shows on television make it out to be. Finger prints, car number plates etc don't mean a whole lot.

I have a number of expat friends living here for many years that have experienced crime at home and elsewhere. Most of them moved to safer neighborhoods, installed security bars, systems. This doesn't mean they will not fall victim again but it does help.

I have also heard stories of paying the police motivation money to get results.....

Phuket is a great place to live. I too tire and fear the situation here. I often say lets move to the country or some other island..... just for the peace and serenity and honesty of country folk. I grew up in the country and there is not much country feeling left in Phuket.

KarenBravo, sorry to say but it's not going to change.

  9. Hi i have three older PCs i purchased here and they all have copied Windows. Am I able to take my original XP windows out of my old laptop that I do not use and put it into one of my PC's?

OR Anyone know where to buy original system at a reasonable price. i do not need newest version as the PCs are for personal and customer internet access use.

  10. The truths behold, yes the Island is understaffed with underpaid Police, and by western standards much criminal activity does not get dealt with.

Crime happens in all countries Phuket is no different than Sydney, New York, Rome.

In the relatively crime free small country town I grew up in rural Canada about 10 years ago the choice of inebriates turned from marijuana to speed (methamphetamine) All hel_l broke loose: violent crime went through the roof, Break and Entry, murder etc as it has world wide.

Based on per capita statistics Phuket is on par.

Drug related crime has gone up because the drug of choice world wide is methamphetamine: Ya Baa

    Translation

    "Crazy medicine".

Violent crime against Westerners has increased as there are more of us here, more of us to fall prey.

In the past, the news, if reported was mostly Thai related.

    Sensationalism sells.

Recently, on the ABC (Australian televised news) I watched an interesting report that Thailand is now training for the first time in history Thai women to become police officers in order to deal with woman related crimes as it is difficult for men to address the crimes due to respect of privacy.

Men are not able to ask questions about rape/abuse etc in order to not loose face/show respect. Congratulations to Thailand. Gently the country moves ahead.

Interestingly enough I have not seen anything in local news on the matter. Maybe I missed it. Asked my wife who watches the news regularly and she has not seen any mention.

I read so much of the same here on TV, may I suggest each one of you send a well written letter to the Phuket Governor. Request a response.

I need not suggest your questions to him as we all have the same thoughts about crime against women; it must be dealt with swiftly. (Oops I guess i just did).

When we have all done this lets start a forum on what his responses are.

Recently he has publicly made an appeal for help to address the unlawfulness of his Island.

If you have the time to write to each other on TV why not take the time and write to someone who might be able to do something about it.

  12. One of my papaya trees has two fruit from each stem, i pointed this out to my wife and she got a bit excited, not having seen anything like it before....telling her friends as well, I suggested they look for lottery number... :)

yes they do like good drainage and moisture, poor drainage makes for root rot. This particular type of papaya is old school/native), the long ones are hybrid?

Mine are 50 meters from the beach and the soil consists of sand and some concrete rubble with very little soil mixed in. I will occasionaly throw a few 20-20-20 pellets and run the hose on them when it's extra dry. Lovely flavour, if i had a horse i would make give natural fertilizer. Guess i could put some fish heads, too many flies...
