  1. I guess if you can get a drivers license with a tourist visa I should be alright but I am asking to double check.

I have a one year license that expires August, as does my present extension of stay. As I need a new passport and also to be in and out of Thailand several times this year I was planning on starting the whole visa process over again as it gives me a multiple entry and I don't need to keep a bunch of money in a Thai bank until a year later when I get a new extension.

But I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to get a 5 year license with a new visa in a new passport. It would seem I should be able to. Any differing opinions?

You can only get a one year temporary dl on a tourist visa after which you must be on a long stay extension (marriage or retirement} or a B or O multi with or without a wp to get your 5 year dl.

I was planning on getting a new O visa based on marriage. So essentially I was asking if I can get my 5 year DL after my 1 year DL expires on a new visa with no extension. Or will I need the extension to get a certificate of residence from immigration?

No need to worry, you’re eligible to apply for the 5 year license on a brand spanking new long stay visa.

Edit: Noticed you're currently holding a 1 year temp license, therefore your "applying" for the 5 year license, (Semantics...)

  2. I remember the Asian economic crisis, when the Baht was 68-70 to the pound. What did the bars do to make up there losses? They doubled the price of a beer from 40baht to 80 baht. Thailand is vastly overpriced. The Baht is overvalued and the service is getting worse.Greed is overtaking common sense.

Ya that's why one bedroom condos rent for $120 dollars a month. Lots of better deals by the beach in Florida.

A 1 bedroom condo for less than 4K a month, where do you find that in Pattaya? Or did you mean Florida, if so, then no need to provide a source...

  3. Why is everybody on this guys back ? Are you jealous ?

Whats the issue with a farang volunteer with an official vehicle ?

Surely he too has to play by the rules. Unless he did pull you

over all alone and play a big shit, why is everybody jumping on him ???

    luudee

To each his own, but if you put yourself out there like that for ridicule, you'll most likely get what you deserve...

  4. hi does anyone know if you try to renew a five year driving license without an ( "O" 1 year visa ) and only have short * visa on arrival * you will only receive a 1 year renewal (instead of the 5 year renewal ).......apparently this happened to a friend 9 months ago ....is this correct ? ..thanks

Correct, with a visa exempt entry you will only qualify for renewal to a one year license.

  5. What time does the afternoon session of the examinations commence?

Is there any advantage to going in the morning (I only hear people rushing to be in the morning queue)?

    Thank you.

I too prefer showing up in the afternoon. They open at 1 pm again after the lunch break.

However if not renewing, but applying for a new license, I’m almost certain you will have to be there in the morning.

It’s been reported to be quite crowded these days.

  6. Are those balls fried?

    They look fried.

    If so, that seems weird.

I guess we can assume they are pork, not beef.

I had a look at their menu a while back and noticed the Finnish stuff but decided not to try it at least that time.

    Maybe later.

Frying meatballs is a very common way of cooking them in Europe, so nothing weird with that considering they are serving European food.

Additionally its also very common to use a mix of pork and beef so your assumptions there could very well be off.

Yes I'm aware frying meatballs isn't unusual but it matters to some who are avoiding fried foods.

I'm also aware of mixed meat meatballs, but considering the beef quality situation in Thailand, I think it's a fair guess those are pork.

    Just curious.

I too try to stay away from fried food, it was just your comment:

    They look fried.

    If so, that seems weird

That threw me off, I figured the TV food critic would be well aware of fried meatballs and not considering it being weird.

As for the beef, I sometimes buy the ground beef at Makro, makes great meatballs when mixed with ground pork.

  8. Could anyone please confirm that if I renew my 5 year license after my birthday/expiry, I will receive nearly 6 years until next renewal? Thank you.

    Yes

I can also confirm this is absolutely correct smile.png

Yes, always worth waiting until after expiry. But don't leave it more than 6 months or you have to do a full re-test.

Would be interesting to hear where you got that information. I know some LTOs diverge from the published rules of the DLT, but that’s an extreme diversion.

If you renew more than 1 year late, you will have to retake the written test. If renewing more than 3 years late you will also have to retake the practical test. Source.

  9. Does that mean motorbikes will no longer be able to use the motorway between Phan Thong and Pattaya?

Never seen a motorbike legally go through a tool plaza on thailand

As is the norm in Thailand, things are never crystal clear. There is a sign at the H7 slip road in Pattaya, which would suggest to the uninitiated that either motor bikes (or bicycles and lorries with trailers) aren't supposed to use the 7 motorway, or that they aren't allowed to use the slip road at this point, but can enter the H7 further along. As you might imagine, either way no one takes a blind bit of notice (as the attached shows). I live a click from the Nongprue H7 exit and can't as yet figure out what the final configuration is going to be. There are no toll booths so far on the BKK bound entrance and a couple of well known options to avoid the new toll coming off the Pattaya bound carriageway as it stands. All will be revealed I guess.

    © Google earth

The sign at the entrance you mention doesn't allow certain types of vehicles because it is a flyover, they are allowed on the highway though, they should only use the u-turn and enter from the Northside

As soon as it has become a Tollway, those vehicles will not be allowed passed the tolbooths, but as I assume that it will still be toll free between Sukhumvit and the Nongprue exit, they will still be allowed on that stretch of highway.

By now I'm still confused if there will be toll booths at the Sukhumvit entrance as well.

U-turn will not help. Same type of sign at the Sukhumvit south bound entrance. You are not, and have never been allowed to drive a motorbike on this highway.

Here's a link to the southbound sign, if you want to check it out.

  10. Guy opposite Kiss restuarant on SSCC repairs fridges etc he may be able to fix and he is not far away. Collinbournes auction house often have freezers in that sell cheap.

Glad to hear it was not the neighbours tapping into your electric.

Which KISS please? Second road soi diana? What is SSCC? Phone number?

That would be the Kiss restaurant on Soi Siam Country Club rd.

  12. I'd say that quote is about accepting private health care insurance.

Did you read this part of the article?

Pattaya residents in Moo 10, 11 and 12 villages can register for free medical care at the Soi Buakaow hospital or by calling 036-103-900

Additionally there are two posters in the link I provided that state theyve already signed up.

Missed that one, but reading the replies, some people stated they live in the zones but were not successful at signing up.

Would be good to hear from those who have signed up and were successful.

Agreed, would be good to hear from those who successfully have signed up.

Havent tried to register myself, just recently read this news article and figured I pipe in.

  13. This one does not accept social security or 30 baht scheme, its cash and insurance clients only. Might change in the future but nothing in social security news letter.

All the people now get assigned to Banglamung Hospital

This has recently changed, at least for some Pattaya residents. Link to news article.

Do not think so, quote from the linked article

A spokesperson told Pattaya Mail that the hospital is fully equipped and ready for patients, but they dont accept any source of health insurance as of yet. In the future they will, but they havent declared as to when.

I'd say that quote is about accepting private health care insurance.

  14. When I moved from Bkk to the darkside, the SSO in Nonthaburi told me the closest was Laem Chabang 20-odd kilos away. No other hospitals were mentioned back then (3 years ago), they basically gave it to me as a fait accompli. I'm not impressed with LC. Recently a new hospital opened at Soi Buakaew, but I know nothing of it other than what others say - it's an SS (smile.png) hospital but probably very light on facilities because of its newness - can anyone expand on that?

  15. The 5 years can be renewed 3 months before expire, when you come 1 day late then you will have to do everything again.

The lady called them a couple of days ago ...

    So be aware!

Have her call again, you'll probably get different information.

Yes, could be. 5 Years ago she called and they said you have to go after the license is expired. We forgot what we actually did.

Now she has a new license, got it 7 days before exparation so that 3 mnths period seems to be right.

Had to do the video and eye test. Not the brake test cuz they were crowded. :-)

    Pattaya.

Yes, you can renew your 5 year license 90 days early, as opposed to the 60 days for a temporary license.

I’ve always recommended people to renew their 5 year license after expiry, as you will then get close to 6 years of validity instead of 5.

Early or late renewal, you will have to watch the “safety” video, and do the eye and reaction tests. However if you’re more than 1 year late renewing, you will have to retake the written test. If more than 3 years late you will also have to retake the practical test.

Here’s a link about renewal in English.

  16. Are you sure? I never heard that this is changed.

    Yes, I’m sure.

If you’re fluent in Thai, you can check this link, unfortunately I don’t have one in English for you.

Granted, every LTO is run by their own rules so exceptions are likely to be encountered. However Pattaya, where I reside, do abide by these rules.

Thanks for the link, My Thai is good enough to read it wink.png

Maybe it is something locally as so far i know Phuket LTO does not allow it.

My pleasure, sounds like the Phuket LTO are still governed by the old rules then.

  17. My temp licence expires in dec.

Should I go for renewal just days after it expires?

Yes, if you before the expire date you will get again a 1 year temporary license.

Oh, that changed years ago... You can apply for the 5 year license 60 days before expiry of your 1 year license.

Are you sure? I never heard that this is changed.
