  1. i will be renewing my 5 year car drivers licence, at Nakohn si Thammarat. Thanks for all the posts, which makes it easy to prepare. During my previous application, I was told by the officer that they did not need a medical cert. Some current posters say yes, others don't mention it. Is there a listing of paperwork required, posted at a government website? I will post of my experience, once I've been and done. Tia. Pat.

No need for a medical certificate when renewing a 5 year license.

Here is a link to the required paperwork from the Department of Land Transport.

My 5 year renewals are coming up soon. Can i just check if you are applying for a new car and bike licence is one original residency certificate enough and one copy (to save 300 baht).

One certificate is enough, and it is free, there is no charge for a certificate of residency, you may tip them if you like, or not, if you dont , they will still renew your retirement visa (one year extension of stay).

Interesting, I haven’t been able to get a free residence certificate in Pattaya since immigration was located at soi 8.

    What's your secret?

I know some immigration offices do issue these for free but on the flip side, some won’t issue them at all.

Yes 1 original and one copy is fine.

You probably get pushed at immigration to "buy" two residence certificates if you mention your renewing both bike and car licenses, so say you're only renewing a bike license.

  3. seen them at Makro they start at ฿ 2000 upwards

Went there today. Out of stock, but 2k is a lot better than 4k for the smallest deep fat fryer I've ever seen.

Banglay is correct, I saw them at Makro today as well. They are close to the entrance where the TVs are on display.

Saw two different types, both 3 liters, priced at 1,990 and 3,990.

I don't doubt you are right. I will take another look.

It's remarkable how 3 pairs of eyes plus a Macro shop assistant, ('if not there' - pointing - 'no have'), failed to spot them yesterday.....obviously all looking in the wrong place.

Wouldn't send you off on a wild goose chase would I whistling.gif

Makro sells Princess brand kitchen appliances. This one looks like cheaper version they had.

  5. I am wondering if the requirements are the same for the five-year license renewal in Chonburi if you have a license with an address from a different province. I moved to Chonburi a while back and my present Thai drivers license has my old Bangkok address and will expire soon.

Yes, the requirements are the same, makes no difference where you got your old license.

  6. They said the same thing about the big PVC water guns last year. Plenty were walking down Beach Road with them, right in front of the police stationed there.

We drove home around 7PM. Suk was a nightmare, especially for scooters. People running into the road just to splash them...normally right in the face. And of course, few scooters riders had helmets. Police were nowhere to be seen.

Yes they did, and they’ve been saying that about the PVC Water Guns for at least the last 8-10 years.

However, as usual with announcements like this, seems like there’s no interest in any enforcement.

  7. Can't quite understand how this thread can keep on going after post 18, it's all there.

I always squirm at the British broadcasters pronunciation of Thai names, last time around for me was the report of the Burapha Bike week, wasn't quite sure if I was supposed to laugh at or feel sorry for the narrator.

  8. Don't understand where all the winers or maybe I should say besserwissers come from, it's been a while since we've seen a boarder run report, this could very well be useful for some readers on the forum. Additionally if you're looking to strap yourself in, take a look at Five Star Visa Runs or 1st Class Visa Runs, they both run six seater vans equipped with seatbelts.

With "up-market" names like "Five Star Visa Runs" and "1st Class Visa Runs" do either of these company minivans have onboard toilets with quality tissue?

Would make a visa run far more pleasant knowing you had that security as opposed to unpleasant surprises when it comes to using a squat toilet at a service station.

<deleted>...? Does the elevator go all the way to the top?

  9. Good sentiments and please do not think I am in any way undermining your posting, but, there was the driver and a further six people in the pickup who were injured. Maybe there were even more passengers that luckily were not injured -- my Isuzu 4 door had only four seatbelts. If this was a kingcab, the likelihood was that it only had two seat belts fitted, one to each front seat.....

I've just had another look at the photo and see that this was a 4 door Isuzu G Max, so probably only four seatbelts for the seven ( plus ) occupants. If this vehicle was insured, by over-loading the vehicle with passengers the insurance company may well refuse to pay anything should a claim be made.

There are two types of insurance you can have for a pickup, one is classed as a sedan type vehicle (usually for 4 door pickups and covers 5 people) the other is for 2 door pickups where 13 people are covered by the insurance.

    There’s some misinformation here.

finnomick, regarding seatbelts. I too have a 4-door Isuzu pickup and it’s fitted with seatbelts for 5 people. There is a lap belt for the center passenger in the back. Either way, you can still get insurance coverage for more passengers than fitted seatbelts.

basmlb, regarding insurance, my pickup is classified as a sedan (white plates), and my first class insurance covers 6 passengers plus the driver. So there are more options than just the two you’ve listed.

  11. I agree totally! My fiver expires next month. A few Q,s please

I got my first fiver in bkk, but now have a condo in ptya. Can I renew in ptya or have to go back to bkk office?

Where do you do the renewal in ptya?

Where do you get a residence certificate in ptya, and what do you need to take to do so?

Thanks in advance for any responses,

Yes, you can renew in Pattaya.

You renew at the LTO, map is linked in this post.

Residence certificate, at immigration, Jomtien soi 5, see post #61 above for requirements.

Cheers thx for the reply ...time is here , plan is to go Monday

My Pleasure, hope all went well last Monday.

  12. Sorry to hear that, never been to Muang Ake myself, but reading on this boards there have been a few good reviews about the place.

I’ve taken my dog to Siam Country Pet Hospital for about the last 6 years or so. Haven’t had any serious problem, however the two vets there seems quite knowledgeable and are also very caring.
Would definitely recommend you taking your dog there.

Additionally, before I used Siam Country Pet Hospital, I took my dog to the Na Jomtien Animal Hospital for about a year, that place has also got a few good reviews on this board.
My only gripe there was their pricing, but I understand that Muang Ake is even dearer. It’s located on Sukhumvit between Soi Watbon and Makro, same side and south of Muang Ake.

  13. That joint does extensive manual testing as I already indicated.

I don't wish to say more on the matter.

    Up to you!

As far as I see, this is the first time you mention manual testing, extensive or other.

Concluding from this, with your previous comment about computerized analysis machines that would not be good enough for a vision test.

I'd say extensive manual testing should be a good thing then, right?

  14. Appreciate your efforts but your link is to F1 at Sepang in Malaysia.

For a grandstand ticket it will cost about 6600 Baht.

Don't think I'll be going though, seen F1 a few times and while its ok on TV, it can get quite confusing / boring to watch at the track.

Off course the link is to F1 at Sepang, that's the whole point I've been trying to make. See post #6. It cheaper to watch a formula 1 race in a neighboring country than watching a motocross event in Sriracha. (oh, and since you mentioned it, there are quite a lot of grandstand tickets at Sepang for 3.5 - 5 K Baht).

Therefore I asked the OP if there are any discounts for foreigners with a Thai license or a work permit. I doubt there will be many locals paying these prices. I used to watch the rally cross up in Ban Bung before they closed the track a few years ago, entrance there was B20. biggrin.png

  15. I initially recommended Euro Optics for a prescription, with another viable option in Sriracha, that I've personally used. I've to say that you're definitely off the cuff stating that they only sale children frames, besides since you're not interested in frames, what do you even know/care about this?

Additionally, it would be quite interesting to hear what jintig has against this shop, as he's already pissed on it twice.

OK. I am feeling pressured to say a little more and I can say this as a general item of suggestion.

For people who only need READING glasses, you can go to any place that has computer analysis or just test different strengths yourself.

For more complicated needs, such as progressive lens, ask yourself, which would be a better choice to provide a prescription, an actual EYE DOCTOR (Ophthalmologists), or a person that is not an actual EYE DOCTOR? Your choice, your money, your risk. Say no more.

Another advantage of getting an eye exam with a DOCTOR is there you can be screened and diagnosed for specific eye diseases beyond just the practicality of correcting vision with eyeglasses.

Note: no, I am not suggesting the place in question uses instant computer analysis machines.

I agree with most of what you're saying, however don't understand why you're putting down the recommendations for Euro Optics. The OP needs a prescription, and an Optometrist should be more than capable of doing so, and I'd say just as well as an Ophthalmologist. OP's not looking for a complete eye checkup.

Of course they have an instant computer analysis machine at Euro Optics. Most places do, as they start off with that to get a baseline on your vision, just as they get a reading off your old glasses. If memory serves me right, they even used one of those at Phyathai, when I went there for a complete eye examination. Why start a vision test from scratch, when you have these tools available to you?

However if the analysis machine is all they use, then of course that's not good enough.

  16. The cheapest ticket I can see for the F1 is 205 ringitt about 2000 baht so I dont quite get your point?

Wow, you're needling me while you've obviously haven't checked the prices in the link I supplied. Please do so and you'll see that the cheapest tickets are 80 Ringgit, and that's for a 3 day pass. If you buy them early, it's only 49 Ringgit, i.e. 500 Baht.
I did, and I have again, and the cheapest prices I see for the F1 is 205 ringitt, are you sure you are looking at F1 prices? Appreciate if you could give a direct link to the 49 ringitt price/tickets.

I provided a direct link in post 8 above. Here it is again, for your convenience: Link.

  18. There food is disgusting.

All you can eat there = all you can puke.

    i disagree entirely

i have been for lunch a few times when shopping in that area

its not gourmet but its not disgusting and has never given me a delhi belly

Never had breakfast there , but often have Thai food for lunch and it's usually quite good. Have noticed lately that the portions have begun to shrink in size. Had Massaman Neua recently and the number of potatoes had increased while the beef was less than before. Also have ordered the Penang Kung, which used to have a more generous supply of kung. Last time I had the Penang Salmon it was quite good.

Not sure if the reductions in sizes are meant to increase profits during the high season or if this is a permanent feature.

Still the food is generally decent quality. The childish comment about puking is unwarranted for any Thai dishes I've had. Never tried the non-Thai offerings, but the other diners I've seen all seemed to finish off what was served them.

Have to agree. The Thai dishes I've had there have been quite good. I've also enjoyed the Paneng Salmon there.

Over all, I'd say food is above average, however so is their pricing.
