  2. Well I flew back last week on a Thai Airways flight, fully booked and it was the most expensive flight I have ever taken.

Also the biggest queues I have ever seen at immigration. So it all depends on when you arrive

    Tony

Same here, a couple of weeks back flew Seoul - Bangkok - London and back. All the planes were as close to 100% as I could tell and immigration at Suvarnabhumi whilst not the biggest queues I've seen were close.

Currently I am working out of Seoul but due to cutbacks will not be transferring to site as planned so will be out of work come end April. If I get a new contract by then I'll go where ever that work is (but not UK for tax reasons) if not I'll return to Thailand. My money will go a whole lot further there than virtually anyplace else, I am comfortable there, I can still be available for work via the internet and I can fly direct BKK to virtually anyplace I will need to.

do you think the planes are full because the airlines cut back the number of flights?as i posted before, someone had remarked that phuket was very busy now.

I am retired, recession, inflation ,exchange proof, :o:D:D party time.Going no where fast.

  5. Be prepared to do a runner and abandon the apartment if you want to break up with her.

Theres been so many a story here in LOS about this type of thing. Most people start off with that ole "Naa, it won't happen to me" type of attitude.

By the end of it they are wishing they lived in fort knox with armed security personnel. :D

Happens all over the world not just here. :o:D:D:D

  6. I would like to try and stock up on some things in Bangkok before moving up to Mae Hong Son, can anyone tell me a good shop where I can find (or best neighborhood to look for):

    - some specialty groceries, i.e. good olive oil, parmesan, maybe some canned things like anchovies?

    - cheap new or good used electric guitar and amp

    - nice suits for hot weather (tailor maybe? is that doable in a few days)

    - designer perfume, bath products

Also, is it feasible to ship some of this stuff up to MHS using Thailand's postal service? Is there some sort of preferable delivery service? Or should I just fly it up with me as excess baggage?

    thanks!!

Critical ... Jeremy (top) and Guy Webster.

Sydney teen boys critical after Thailand balcony collapse

TWO Sydney teenage brothers are fighting for their lives in a Bangkok hospital after plunging 5 meters when a rotten balcony railing collapsed.

Jeremy Webster 18, and brother Guy, 14, from Ingleside, were celebrating their mother Linda's birthday at Baan Samui Resort at Koh Samui.

The family was having breakfast when the railing gave way and the boys fell two storeys. Both were rushed to a local hospital before being flown to Bangkok.

Jeremy sustained head injuries and a possible spinal injury while Guy was to undergo surgery overnight for a shattered femur.

"They had just given me breakfast," Ms Webster said last night. "They came out to talk to me about what they had organised for me today - I was to have a massage.

"Then they went to the edge, looking downstairs to talk to my daughter and as my older son leant on the railing it just gave way and my other son went with him. He hit his head on a rock when he fell and my other son ended up in a pond."

Her sister Julianne Vincent said Jeremy had just turned 18 and was celebrating finishing his HSC at Northern Beaches Christian School. She said Ms Webster and her daughter Kelly, 20, were forced to fly on a commercial aircraft to Bangkok because there was not enough space in the medical helicopter.

"All we are trying to do is just try to get them some help," Ms Vincent said last night.

A Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman confirmed the Australian consulate in Thailand was aware of the incident but he had no further details: "We are aware of it and our post in Thailand is checking it out."

Baan Samui Resort is popular tourist destination along Chaweng Beach and boasts that all suites lead to balconies overlooking the beach.

No one to sue for big bucks.

  8. Saw CC for the first time last week .It had many people ,95% Farang in posing stance .Standing and sipping as if they were at a cocktail party .Saw nothing that would make me stay for a drink .

CC is not the name of the bar it is the customers name.

    :o:D:D:D:D:wai:

  9. Was walking by Soi 11 yesterday and hadn't been to Cheap Charlie's in about 6 months, so decided to stop in for a beer. Before ordering I looked up at the drink menu and they had covered the old prices with new prices. Now 70 baht for all local pisswater! No air conditioning, horrible splintering tree stump seating, a toilet where " you can pee but no shit". I voted with me feet and will not soon return.

Now at Soi Cowboy happy hour can be had for as little as 40 baht a beer, sitting in air condition comfort surrounded by dancing damsels. See ya " not so cheap charlie's"!

hmmm, what was their price before? 60 baht mate? Unlike bars at Cowboy, CC and the like are reliant on booze sales for a profit.

I wonder how you reacted when the taxi fares went up for the first time ever a few months back - do you now use your feet?

Are you calling him a cheap Charlie?Just curious.

  10. I was walking along Surawong road at the top end of Patpong last night when I heard the sound of cheering and clapping. There was a large tour bus parked offloading elderly Scandinavian tourists (Scantours I think) and the market stall holders were greeting them enthusiastically.

So who says we are not welcome in LOS.

I can certainly vouch for some young women on Patpong who made me feel very welcome, they gave me a right dose of the clap. :D

Do you have to put in writing that you are not too smart? :o:D:D

  11. For 2008 the Foreign Earned Income exclusion amout is $87,600. You can either use the Bona Fide residence test (if you have a foreign address) or the 330 day rule (need to be out of the US for 330 days out of a 365 day period). Note: that it does not have to fall under one calander year for the 330 day rule, it can be pro-rated for 2008-2009 or which ever years. You can go to the IRS.gov. website and read Pub. 54 and Form 2555. You can also file for an extension to file for up to 6 months if you are overseas, see Form 4868. Note: that an extension to file is NOT an extension to pay any tax that may be due.

    Hope that helps,

    WS

I think that exemption will disappear as Obama takes the axe :o:D:D to the working class.

  12. 30,000 for one piece of plywood? you sure about that? they never seem to be doing that good. plus, different tourist seasons would have to have different rates. sounds like conjecture honestly.

A Thai friend of mine asked what the price of a stall was last week and was told 'sam muen' i.e. 30,000 a month. Now you can understand why most items on sale in Patpong are available at Chatuchak Market for less than half price (even without haggling!)

And the price at Chatuchak is?

  13. Deopending on how much you want to pay, but I find UDS on Sukhumvit Soi 103, Tel NO: 02743 2288

Husband and wife operated, both speak English, the wife better. Skilled and competent pratitioners, the clinic is also very modern, with all the facilities required of a modern dental surgery.

Prices I have found to always be very good. Nearest BTS is On Nut, and it is on the left hand side, before soi 15 if I remebr correctly.

Implants are expensive all over the world, not much difference between Thailand and US prices.I guess the Thai's haven't been able to copy them, yet.

  14. :o:D:D

Just renewed box and it now cost 500 baht per year. Although this time they also gave 4 extra months free. Perhaps because of the big leap in cost from previous years which I think was 150 baht.

PO boxes in business and tourist areas have gone up to 500 baht but other areas just increased to 200 baht I think.

Nice to know I have a box in Nana for over 10 yrs, paid 150,now I won't think they are ripping me off.You have to be lucky, sometimes they are all rented.Sometimes I send a friend to pay now I will believe them if they say the price is higher. It is still cheap ,changing addresses every time you move is a pain.

  15. $150 million?

    Way to go! :o

Nothing like a bit of white collar crime, hope he has a load stashed away somewhere, helps to sooth your soul when you do your time.

Are you serious? you do realise that this sort of crime actually increases the prices we all have to pay, credit card fraud has to be paid for! and at the end of the day it is the average consumer who foots the bill!

    FF

Ahhh poor us eh?....we may have to pay 1p a year more then again the banks make enough profit from credit cards for them not to be bothered with investing more in anti fraud measures.

I hope the guys get away with it.

Hopefully your card number will be acquired by one of these groups and then you can ahhh poor us. That is if you have a credit card. :D

They can take a simple step like putting your picture on the credit card but they don't.

  16. Spend a week or so in Seoul, or Hong Kong, or Singapore, or Tokyo, or Macau and when you come back to Bangkok and get in a taxi to take the ride to Bangkok and the first thing you are hit with is all the sprawl, graffiti, and how ugly the city is overall. the unfinished ghost buildings. what the people on the street look like. the endless motorcycles. the powerlines hanging all over the place. the sidewalks all cut up and filled with puddles. roads that look like there was a war. crumbling over passes. the terrible infrastructure. homeless people. make shift squatter housing. granted, western cities tend to be just as bad, but man oh man, are there some really nice, clean, wonderful cities in Asia - and no, bangkok is not one of them.

    ....but its cheap, right?

Somehow I don't think you improve Bangkok.I am here because I like it,and I have the time and money to live anywhere in the world. :D:o:D

  17. I have a worrying question which i hope someone can help clarify for me-

I have a long outstanding debt to a UK Bank, not big, but enough. The debt collecting agency got my number here and has now said that if i don't pay it will be passed to the courts in UK to get a court order to approach immigration here and request the cancellation of any visas i have to stay in Thailand. I work here on a non B. Is this really possible ? Needless to say, I am very worried about this!

Outstanding debt is usually a civil court matter. Criminal court convictions are what gets everyone's attention over at immigration.

I know a lot of ex-pats that would have to start worrying, especially if they start collecting over due child support. :o:D:D:D

  18. First of all I am not complaining about living in Thailand and making just a little money I ask the question

how would you survive on just a little income. As I mentioned before I worked all my life but I will

not recieve, or very little pension from my country where I paid as a worker or when I had my business

for over 22 years. Just ask the expert Gunga Din. And as you all know I talk about Australia.

Check up www.news.com.au from yesterday and you will find Australia is the second poorest

country on pension payments and the poorest in unemployment payments in the developed countries in the world. And to get a pension over here is almost impossible or very little. But this is besides the question what I ask. I just ask you guys how would you survive? And I am not driving a Benz I am driving an old Toyota which is 20 years old.

The question you ask is irrelevant because most ex-pats living long term in Thailand have financially planned well for the rest of their lifetimes here.

I do not consider visa runners as ex-pats or residents. Only as tourists trying to stretch their funds to the limit so as to hang on here as long as possible.

The OP, would be better off going back home, as he has become a charity case. And that's what happens to those who rush to reside in Thailand and do not have funds enough to sustain them for the years they wish to remain here.

    Sad but true.

How true I am retired and set for life.My pension has a full COLA and I am hoping for high inflation back there.I planned my life,I see ex-pats here not planning on old age and before they know it they are old.If you can't handle it :o:D:D:D head out .

  19. I bought a security wallet with incidents like this in mind.. It has a loop on it which your belt passes through, and then tucks inside your trousers. Feels like a normal wallet, but would take brute force to steal.

I had a Lady boy try to steal from me while I was walking late at night,I kicked it's arse and then it went to the police. The police found me and I showed them my police ID,they asked me if I wanted it in jail.I told them it is up to them,I didn't care because it lost. They took it away,I imagine to kick it's arse again. The nerve to try to steal from me and go to the police. :o:D:D
