  1. I too worked in Scotland for two years and it was only then I came anywhere near understanding the troubles in Northern Ireland. I have never experienced in the British Isles such ill feeling towards others of the same nationality on account of their religious convictions. It was a well known that for a long time no catholic would ever play for Rangers at least on that count I believe things have improved. I heard views expressed about the English which when I looked at the present campaign left me ambivalent as to whether they remained part of the UK or not.

It is not that no Catholic would play for Rangers, the old Rangers (that's the ones who no longer exist) would not sign Catholics until 1986 when Graeme Souness took over.

I probably wrote that in a misleading way when I should have stated that it was the unofficial policy at Rangers not to sign any Catholics, I am not sure what they might have said if Pele had wanted to play for them, I assume coming from Brazil he would have been a Catholic.

I see that trouble broke out between the two sides last night in Glasgow. It reminds you a little of the make up of Northern Ireland, 60% Protestants, 40% Catholics but no Christians.

  3. Oh I get it , guns are the only way to kill people, so we ban them and know they use knives, oh we ban that and they start using forks!.... It's not the instrument of murder, it is who commits the murder

I think your reply really sum up the situation in the USA and why it is impossible to have a sensible debate. I don't think I have ever read one post on here which has ever suggested banning guns. There have been many that have proposed sensible controls but the debate never gets of the starting block because of that sort of response.

  4. No gun control would prevent this kind of insanity. When children are the victims, he could have used other equally effective methods to end their lives. Very sad. As a US citizen, I'm a strong believer in gun ownership, but also a strong believer in the regulation of firearms so that only defensive firearms are sold, with sales only to people who pass stringent background checks. I think gun education and target practice are worthy investments. I enjoyed going to police firing ranges growing up, as it was similar to archery practice. No reason to bash the US or its people. It's just something that needs to be solved in the political process, like immigration. But, good luck with that, as the media has intensified the voices of extremists on both sides of these issues.

However I am sure you will agree that any mention of controls no matter how minor is met with the response, "they are trying to take our guns away". Go to Alex Jones's channel and I daresay by now he is already claiming it is a plot by Obama to take the guns away.

  5. And also the Kingdom of Northumbria, including a large part of southern Scotland, within it's area Edinburgh.

    ===================>>

Northumbria was originally one of the Scottish Kingdoms

Cannot agree with you on that point, it was an Anglo-Saxon (sasonach) kingdom, with it's capital firstly in Bamburgh and latter York, both of which are in England.

Anyhow don't worry we don't want Edinburgh back.

The Treaty of York (1237) fixed the boundaries with England close to the modern border -- do you really want to go back further when England was controlled by vikings and French? wink.png

"YES" hundreds of years before when there was no England,no Scotland but a kingdom of Northumbria.

I guess you can say that every nation is a result of someone with a bigger stick coming along at some juncture and taking over. China, The Soviet Union are good examples of this and many more recent ones. I always get a good laugh at the so called Scottish hero Robert the Bruce. The idea that he wanted independence for Scotland is another myth that we get. The only thing he wanted was to oppress the Scottish people without interference from England. All the leaders of all these countries were at some stage totalitarian dictators no more concerned with the lot of the common people than is Alex Salmond and his £3000 night hotel and his expensive tartan trews. The corrupt Westminster regime is going to be replaced by the corrupt Edinburgh equivalent.

  6. is it exclusively Scotland's oil? its part of the assets of

the united kingdom, everything and I mean everything of any

worth will have to be negotiated,of course the lawyers are

    rubbing there hands with glee.

Salmond won't live long enough to see any sort of Scotland

    that's remotely independent.

I am baffled by this so called independence. We want to keep the pound so that the Bank of England and the UK government will continue to dictate and we want to be free of Westminster control but join the EU so that we can be controlled by them. One thing positive that will come out of it is that they rid themselves of the ridiculous nuclear deterrent. The sooner we follow suit the sooner the UK economy can begin spending its taxes on things that really matter.

  7. You can't deny you voted Thatcher into power three times.

Three tines you should play it to soothe yourselves.

Alas another myth like so many things said about Thatcherism. In fact, Scottish support was crucial to her coming to power. At the 1979 election, the Conservatives won over 31% of the Scottish vote, an increase of almost a third on the previous election In 1979, the Tories also won 22 Scottish seats; had these gone to other parties, Thatcher's 44-strong majority would have disappeared entirely.

  8. Hate preaching has been around for some time and Paisley was very good at it, all masked by a clerical collar.

He was a fake priest who invented his own religion and then set him self up as a preacher. He was a bigot who preached hatred towards the Roman Catholics. He was no better than the Muslim extremists preaching hatred towards all infidels. The world is better off without him

I think the Jews would take you to task over that statement and both the Jews and Christians would probably say the same about the Muslims, Mormons, and every other religious tribe that there has ever been.

  9. For the UK lottery the only rule for winners is that they must be over 16 years of age so anyone of any nationality can be a winner.

and be resident in the UK ( not sure if or how they verify the residency status ) .

Wrong - no residency required for the UK lottery. Not sure about Thai lottery though!

Sent from my iPad using ThaiVisa app

Apologies, I stand corrected.. You are correct for buying UK National Lottery tickets at a shop. I was referring to (but didn't specify) playing the UK National Lottery online, which does require the player to be a UK resident. No idea about Ladbrokes.

I guess that will be one consequence of Scottish Independence, they will have to start their own lottery as they will no longer be able to take part in the National Lottery. Probably means a small National lottery jackpot as well without Scottish participation.

  10. "Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond said the leaders could not be trusted"

and he can be clap2.gif cheesy.gif

Alex - we'll just tell the Westminster government, NATO, the EU parliament and President, that we are special, a special case and they will all re-write their rules to suit us". Dream on Alex, you have been for years.

Given Salmond's track record the saying those in glass house etc does come to mind.

  11. It appears to me that the Scots lack any conviction for wanting independence. At least when the Irish expressed the same wish they set up their own currency and they had their own head of state. All we have had from Scotland is a shopping list of what they want to keep while telling us that they really do want independence.

Have to agree. All I see is I want, I want, I want, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme. With absolutely no substance.

Reminds me of that little trollop in the programme " Just William "

Here is a pretty hard hitting, and I believe unbiased article.

    http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article47228.html

Great article and has cheered me up no end, now even I am hoping for a YES vote, good luck to the Scots with their journey into the unknown I am sure that Alex Salmond a former RBS banker is going to be a very popular man in Scotland a few years from now.

  12. It appears we are all in for a bumpy ride I am sure that those now advocating this course of action will not want to complain when they get considerably less baht to the pound.

Why would we complain? My pensions will continue to be paid by the FUK taxpayers in FUK Pounds (or whatever they choose to call their currency). wai2.gif

I am sure you are right and that all those guys working in the money markets are bluffing.

  13. Well here is a delightful article that shows very clearly what may well happen if Scotland goes it alone.

Note though the Scots are not going it alone the remaining piece of England and its peoples are liable to pick up the bill.

However the short term may be a breeze for the Scots but long term, indeed a very bleak future socially and politically for the Scots.

The S.N.P. are indeed going to be inflicting a serious wound to themselves and the Scottish people in general in their quest for power.

The Irish had a currency long before they got independence, but always pegged to sterling. Even after independence it was pegged for many years. Scotland too had a currency but in the same way - it has been pegged to the pound and over the last 300-odd years it has been superceded. Returning to the old Scots Pund is an option, but it would probably be done with the same pegging to sterling as Ireland did before and HongKong still does today.

Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland and Clydesdale Bank all print banknotes anyway.

Good so no need to keep the pound they can adopt their own currency and peg it to whatever you like. Also make good old Alex your head of state, what is this thing with keeping some outdated monarchy?
