  1. A while back , when I wasn't on retirement extentions , I did as you do , 'till I moved to Phrae.

Nan immigration was very angry at me for not reporting , even though I gave my address everytime I did a re-entry in Mae Sai.

It all depends on which immigration office. First 4 years in Thailand I never went to any immi office , but back then no motel/hotel I stayed at ever reported to immigration. How do I know ? Because the mom 'n pop motels never asked for my passport. Times have changed .

  2. Right across of the soi of the busstation to the main road , is a big hotel , they must have wifi.

    https://www.google.com/maps/@18.1484662,100.1491336,3a,92.4y,317.13h,72.2t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sytYr87xFGFNFuRZ-7uy2lQ!2e0

I looked around for internet/game "shops" to print googlemap for immigration , but it is slim pickings in Phrae . There was a small one in the street of the market , but that's a longer walk and I can't locate it on google maps >> streetview.

So yes , hotel or coffee shop is best bet.

  3. I went twice ( 1 y & 5 y) , but they were not interested in my international DL. They needed the pink belgian DL , which has only 1 language , but clearly shows which vehicles I can drive. They copied it and want to know how long it is valid , because it only has the date of issue on ( and my birth date). Belgian DL's are for life , no BS renewals like here. No translations . Of course it wasn't in Bangkok.

  4. This question has been asked before on this forum.

You want a quiet one and small .... contradictive.

For enough airflow and low noise , you need a big fan at low speed.

Thai fans nearly always come in 3 speeds . Put a large enough capacitor in series with one of the power cables and a switch over the capacitor and voilà : 6 speeds with a quiet , soft breeze at speed nr 1. ( Plastic cap , no electrolite one , suitable for 240 V ac , depending on the motor power around 4,7 to 10 uF). Capacitor acts like a lossless resistor and limits the amps to the motor.

  5. I've done 3 extensions in NAN , and they never asked for that. Last time they did ask for same day update next time. If it is only to see an update in the 3 months before the extension , why deposit at least 100 B ? Now I do withdraw every month from that same account for monthly expenses and the account has monthly interest payments , so that is automaticly more than 100B/month...

May I ask when your last extension was ? My last one was on the 6th of October. I agree with you, why ask for at least 100 baht deposits every month for each of the three months before the extention application. Just doesn't make sense but that is what was clearly stated by the very nice lady who spoke very good english.

May 2015. So in 4 months I have to do the dreaded extension again. But if that is a new requirement , I guess I'm covered by the monthly interest payments.

  7. I went to town today (Phrae) , and in 3 big petshops they had nothing. I found one veterinarian and he had only 1 little bottle . Looked like self made , all in Thai (80 B) and he said it was Albendazole. Not for preggies either.

Asked him for sterlisation , he only takes out the overies 1600 B , He keeps cat for a week...after care and to give anti-biotics. (because Thai don't understand after care --he said). Back home you take the cat home same day , but keep it inside the house for 2 weeks. Can't keep my stray cat inside for a week. Male cats 1000 B. Not really confident in that vet.

@Schondie , how do you use such a pack for only one cat ?

  8. How is it that EGGS at Tesco are 4.5 Baht and not your price of 2.5. Where do persons go to get eggs at 25 baht for 10-----prove it.

orange drink to dilute up from 48 baht to 53 baht (queen brand) Bananas increase. and so on.

Spending has increased because prices have risen, NOT because people are buying more.

A week ago , 77 B for 30 at makro (= 2,56 B/egg). Nice big ones too with a date to early januari.

  9. Aussiesteve63: I get the defamation lawsuit risk , but for us living in Phrae , you could give a little more information. Was it a typical Thai brand gas station , or one of the foreign brands ? Was it on the highways or in town or N ( Rong Kwang) or S ( Denchai).... Or just PM me !

Phrae has a lot of gas stations, and they are building more....do they ever do market research ?

A lot of them don't have much customers , although Phrae is the last stop before the price goes even more up , going to Nan or Phayao . A scheme like this , however unlikely , could help some stations to stay in the black numbers.

  10. Last 90 report , Nan immigration only gave me 85 days. Probably an error. No biggie ,I'll just do my next one earlier because I don't want to be late and pay.

Normally its 89 days after the date of reporting (which can be earlier or later than the due date).

If you report early and compare with the due date then you "loose" some days.

For internet reporting its 89 days after the approved date (following the online application) at least in my cases.

I always send my TM by post a week before due date , and it always comes back with the normal 89 days (counted from the due date on the TM document, except this time....so they made an error.

  11. After a five month wait , finally went to Makro Phrae. Hopes not too high. And it is like MickTurator says : Spacious inside and the aisles are wide and well laid out , but it is nothing compared to european makro's.
Bakery , pretty weak , but the 40 B whole wheat bread (650 gr) is much better than Farmhouse 37 B (500 gr) , and cheaper too. I don't share MT's impression about fruit & veg. It is not that much different in price /quality as Big C. Yes I saw the real yellow lemons , but oranges where just about as expensive as bigc and looked about the same too. They had bigger bags , like in the markt street. Potatoes now 32 , I bought some. Going further , meat and fish , that as a vegetarian can just be swallowed up in a sinkhole , but essential for the devout Buddhist.... . The space could be used for a better fruit & vegetable departement. Behind them , eggs and lots of them and cheap too , 80 B for a 30 pack. A lot of frozen food , too much meat/fish corpses again but also prepared meals and veggies.

Behind in the store , a small section of butter and cheese , but very limited and pricy. If you expect euro prices , 555 , you're wrong. Too high priced for me. I'll just have to wait another 14 months to eat cheese at home at around 75 B / 500gr dutch gouda.

Yoghurt , same too high prices as bigc/lotus. Drinks , enormous choice , but the water is just a few THB less
than others. Like Mick said : "Grocery section had a good selection and everything seemed to be slightly cheaper than BigC or Tesco, only a few baht per item but by the time your trolley is full I guess it would be a worthwhile saving."

Aro mayo in plastic bag.. 1kg or liter , 68 B , but having no fridge , didn't buy it , and you can't open it in the car to check that it tasted right like with a glass jar.

Makro does have a lot of canned food for a (any) Thai store. Petfood very disappointing , less than the bigc aisle and the same fish crap for cats. Thai cats much feel as food frustrated as some ( me! ) foreigners. Electrical appliances , are not that much , but I don't buy any , and I don't go to Makro for it , so couldn't care less. They did have an electrical cookerplate 790 B , but with a pan and a pot , I'd be out of 2000B so I finaly bought a stainless cooker at Home pro.
Parking ok ,not that big ... just watch the rubber cones ( I didn't...) ....

The big advantage is that Makro opens at 6.00 ! This means you can already go in the cooler morning hours and still beat the Thai invading bigc from 10 to 11 and thereafter.
Paying was no problem without a card. Bring your own bags. Like makro back home , prices on the labels can be confusing, BUT there is more English on those labels , something clearly missing at bigc/lotus. ( and yes I know I'm in thailand and Thai is their language).
Makro is definately an amelioration to shopping in Phrae. But I still be going to Mark four, especially after the big investments they made , to make their supermarket more appealing. In many things they still are cheaper than the big
companies . The detour to go to Makro is not big. I'll sure buy less farmhouse bread, and now Bigc has very brown bread (97 cool.png and some different other sort of bread but the day I pay 97 B for bread by bigc , will be the day gold is 60.000B/B. I've stopped buying their croissants , because they raised the price again. For fruit & veggies , the Phrae market will still be better , but no parking and no airco...
Oh, for those coming from the north ; the road resurfacing is making your car dirty, so take a small detour : take the road to town from the north not staight ahead , then in Toeng Hong , a left back to the 101, and you don't have to drive through the dirt. I think maybe another 2 weeks, but with all he holidays begin december , who knows.

Later went to lotus : potatoes around 22 B/kg in fast sale , but are still good for cooking or baking.

  12. The potatoes were 35baht a kilo.

Not the best spuds I have seen but better than the awful green ones that BigC and Tesco sell.

The best spuds are in Muang Dang market.

There is one shop there that sell them in 10kg bags for about 300 baht.

Fruit & Veg is the best dept, excellent selection and good quality.

Prices were good, and better than elsewhere.

Best if I don't quote prices because they will vary each week.

The wife was particularly pleased with the mushrooms she bought.

Outside the parking is good. Inside the aisles are wide and well laid out so it doesn't feel crowded like it does in Mark Four.

Obviously avoid weekends if, like me, you don't want to mingle with the natives.

    Yes it was well stocked.

The only omissions that I noticed were Allbran, Queens fruit juices and razor blades.

2kg cheese blocks come in three brands, Anchor, Pauly and Aro. The Anchor brand wins every time and same price everywhere.

I also recommend the Schrieber parmesan cheese, it's the only one that doesn't smell like vomit.

I already have a card so can't help with what happens if you don't have one.

Makro is the only shop in Thailand where I have seen liquid eggs for sale.

Great for folks who can't crack an egg but like scrambled eggs.

    Good info , thanks.

What is it with thai mushrooms , you just cook them and use them in Thai dishes ?

Is the resurfacing of the 101 , north of Makro finished yet ?
