  1. On Saturday Morning, the grand opening took place of the Annual Pattaya Long Boat Competition, shown live on Channel 3 on Sophon Cable TV.

This two day event is taken very seriously by the competitors who are competing for the Crown Princess Sirintorn and Pricess Somsawalee Trophies.

Khun Sontaya, former Sports and Tourism Minister officiated at the grand opening of the two day event and on the first day of competition at the Maprachan Reservoir, large crowds turned out to cheer on their favorite teams.

The racing, backed up by some high energy commentary, was fast and exciting and if you have the time, we suggest you visit the Reservoir on Sunday for the second and final day of racing.

To add to the entertainment there is also buffalo racing and plenty of food and drink stalls to make it a really fun day out for you, your friends and family.

  2. In the early hours of Saturday Morning, Police Lieutenant Colonel Chayaporn from Banglamung Police Station was called to a constructor’s campsite behind the Pattaya Indoor Stadium in Soi Chayapreuk 2 in Jomtien following reports of a serious fight at the campsite which reportedly left one man dead and a second seriously injured.

At the scene, Police inspected the body of Khun Tawai aged 24 who had been fatally injured. He was reportedly attacked with a knife and then a plank of wood.

A second worker, Khun Neung aged 25 was rushed to Hospital in a serious condition.

According to work colleagues a long running dispute between two sets of construction workers, one from this site and another from a nearby site has led to a number of physical confrontations which culminated in a deadly scuffle on Saturday Morning.

Police are now investigating this case as a matter of urgency but for now the attackers remain at large.

  3. On Thursday afternoon police and rescue services were called to Center Condo in South Pattaya after being informed that a foreign man had fallen from one of the floors and was lying badly injured at the base of the building.

The man, an American national later identified as Michael John Bruner, aged 58, was lying face down and clearly in a very distressed state with multiple broken bones.

Although he was attended to at the scene and then rushed to Pattaya Memorial hospital, Mr Bruner died a short while later from his injuries.

Initial theories are that Mr Bruner committed suicide as residents and workers at the condo said he was suffering financial problems and had recently begun selling off his assets.

Even so, it may be that his fall was an accident. Although the deceased’s room was on the 13th floor of the complex, Mr Bruner fell from the third floor.

Locals said he liked to sit near an open window on the third floor to catch the sea breeze on most days.

For some strange reason police were unable to gain access to Mr Bruner’s room on the 13th floor because it was locked and the keys to the room were not, apparently, on his person.

Police said there was no evidence of anything unusual around the third floor balcony area and they believe Mr Bruner committed suicide due to stress.

The American Embassy has been notified of the death.

  4. School children and other members of the public and the media were invited to the Sea Turtle Conservation Centre at the Sattahip naval base to view what some are calling a modern marvel: a matching pair of white baby turtles.

The hatchlings are part of a collection of green turtle eggs gathered from nearby Kram island and brought to the conservation centre to prevent poaching by people looking for a dietary change from chicken eggs.

The white turtles are the first of their colour to be hatched in Thailand.

This fact is causing great rejoicing among people who think white turtles are a portent of good future for Thailand and are some kind of mystical sign of heavenly approval.

There is a suspicion some of the people ascribing mystical properties to the white turtles may have been smoking unusual substances.

White turtles are apparently quite common in countries like Mexico and Australia and have been seen in Vietnam, but finally Thailand has had its turn. The schoolchildren certainly enjoyed the entire experience of gazing at the turtles.

  5. On Thursday afternoon approximately 1,000 protesters from the People’s Alliance for Democracy, better known by its acronym PAD, descended on the grounds of Banglamung City Hall in a show of support for their colleagues in Bangkok.

The demonstration was organized following the death of one PAD protester and injuries to 23 others after a bomb blast at the main PAD protest site in Bangkok in the very early hours of Thursday morning.

While PAD protesters in Bangkok brought the body of the man killed in the blast to the Metropolitan Police Bureau and demanded justice be done, local PAD protesters organized their rally to centre on Banglamung City Hall.

Although the Chief of Banglamung District was not present when the protesters arrived, the PAD demonstrators stayed in the grounds for a few hours chanting slogans and making a general nuisance of themselves until it came time to clock off and go home.

  6. In the early hours of Friday morning police based at the booth at the corner of Soi Chaiyapreuk 1 and Jomtien Beach Road were roused from their slumbers by the sound of a single bullet being expelled from a pistol.

Recovering quickly from the shock, officers were galvanized into action and took after the shooter, who was on a motorbike, catching up with him at the entrance to Soi 4 on Jomtien Beach Road.

They arrested the man, a 35-year-old Thai national, who then produced a ‘get-out-of-jail-free’ card in the form of a warrant card, revealing he was in fact a police corporal attached to the narcotics bureau.

Despite this fact, the officers still placed the man under arrest and brought him back to the station to explain his unauthorized use of a firearm in a public place.

The corporal claimed he had lent another firearm to a fellow officer and wanted it back. He said he had been unable to get an answer from his friend’s mobile phone, suggesting that even though it was around 4:00am, no self-respecting person would ever turn their phone off. The corporal said he became angry and decided to fire a single shot into the air to express this anger.

Senior police officers have decided to forward a report of the proceedings to the corporal’s superiors for their consideration. It is not certain if this will result in the man being promoted to captain or given a slap on the wrist.

  11. In the early hours of Wednesday Morning a 200-strong protest of Beer Bar owners and employees took place at Pattaya Police Station led by Khun Chardree, the President of the Beer Bar Association of Pattaya.

The complaint was registered with Police Lieutenant Colonel Anan and was prompted by an incident which occurred earlier in the night at the Dream Beer Bar located in Soi 3 off Pattaya Second Road.

The owner of the bar, Khun Pien aged 41 was taken to Pattaya Police Station following a raid of her bar by plain-clothed Police Officers who are responsible for copyright offences and representatives from a Music Publishing Company who license Thai and International music here in Thailand.

The case was referred to Police Lieutenant Colonel Wunlop and during the investigation the record company stated that they would accept a cash payment of 30,000 Baht to avoid any further action.

The Beer Bar Association were then contacted for advice on whether to settle or to take the case to court.

This sparked an angry protest in the grounds of Pattaya Police Station by bar owners who claim that these licensing companies are taking cash payments which are mostly unrecorded knowing that most bar owners would take this option rather than to take the case to court.

The matter is now under investigation by Pattaya Police. :D

  16. Pattaya One News has received a number of complaints regarding unfinished cabling work on the South Pattaya Road outside the Chaimongkol Temple.

Emails and Telephone calls from disgruntled ex-pats and Thai Residents highlighted the problem which we investigated on Saturday Morning.

Recently the electric cables were replaced along the entire stretch of the South Pattaya Road which caused major inconvenience to local businesses and residents who were without power for long periods of time.

This was essential maintenance according to the electric company and was completed just two weeks ago.

The large cement pylons also accommodate cable TV and telephone cables which in some areas were ignored by the electric company.

At this location cables are obstructing the pavement causing inconvenience to pedestrians.

Although there is no immediate danger as the cables are harmless, we understand they have remained in this state for many weeks and it appears that cable and TV companies are either unaware of the problem or do not intend to rectify the problem.

We have today sent a copy of these pictures to the Mayors Office at Pattaya City Hall for his consideration.
