  1. This topic will hopefully help out us newbies or people new to the village life.

I have been lucky enough to have visited my wifes village on many occasions but having never lived there I would imagine it to be a lot different.I have bought beer and whisky for people and really enjoyed the company and questions that come with it.Also I've had food cooked for me in return in abundance.

So, I am asking for the old timers(you will catch up with me one day for calling you this) to post what they have contributed to the village.

It can be from buying beer(or Lao Kao) for the locals to helping with temples or schools. And how often.

  2. Dummy Dummy Dummy

The only thing you get credit for is the language thing.

Apart from this it sounds like you got burnt by a girl, had a run in with the cops and couldn't make any

    friends.

Oh and can't handle your beer!!!!

See you when you come back. :o

  3. Hi there, l was awarded a Residency Permit last year! If anyone one wants any tips then let me know... It takes alot of patience, lots of interviews, tests, VDO interviews etc etc, ........Good luck.

    Hi Krismat89

Hopefully this is a easy one for you. What would you recommend if I wanted to stay in Thailand for 9 months of the year.I am married to a Thai and we plan to base our lives here. Not ready for retirement yet.I work offshore and can only show proof of my weekly pay(no taxes).

    Thanks a bunch mate

  4. Wear a helmet at all times.Dont wear flip flops with a kickstart bike.I had only just passed my bike test in the states when the wife and I went "home"(sakon).I had to to use the brothers bike to go somewhere not important and yes you guessed it,it had a kickstart. My foot slipped whilst wearing my flip flops and of course everyone was looking on to see the farang ride this contraption, this almighty golf ball size lump appeared on my shin.I managed to keep my face straight as nobody seen it.As I got down the road I let it all out. AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGGGG.

If you ever see some farang with shin guards on, then you know why!!!!!!!

  5. There is a falang bar in the town, it was called Neds bar and now is called Toon Army. They have many English books that you can borrow.

    Geordie.

By the way it's not my bar

    Hey Geordie

Can you give me some idea where this bar is in the town.I take it were talking about Sakon Nakhon?

Will be out the later in the year for hopefully a long period of time.I know Im gonna need some normality from time to time.lol.

  6. My wife and I lived in my Jomtien condo. It is a nice condo and we walked to the beach several times a week. I spent entirely too much time in the bars and was bored with the whole tourist thing. I missed having a workshop and toys to play with that were impossible to have while living in a condo. I like to have animals around too. My wife had a house and a little land in Loei province. We started taking regular trips up there and little by little I westernized her house. After a number of trips I decided that I liked the mountains and the farm country. We made the move. I left the condo empty for about a year to make sure I would like it upcountry. I now have many toys and plenty to keep me occupied. I highly value my privacy and that was understood by my wife. I don't enjoy spending time with the village drunks and don't enjoy having Thai visitors in the house. My wife is free to visit her parents in the next village and I am quite content to stay at home doing whatever appeals to me. I am very content living up here with my wife and have no desire to give it up. I should add that if anything were to happen to my wife or our relationship, I'd pack up head back to the farang ghetto. This life I live is what retirement is all about and what I worked for all my life.

    Hi Gary

Just reading your post, thought it deserves a pat on the back.

I dont mean to patronise you as I am only 33 yrs old.

Its the idea about living close to family but not to close.

We have both decided to move to thailand(Sakon Nakhon).

Her family live about 30 min drive from the city. She will be going to

university,so I have her looking for a house near by.Couldnt bear living

    with all the family 24/7.

  7. Holy moly

Ive been reading some off this stuff guys and it makes you think!

Well hats off to some of the guys advice.

Fortunatley I only have to deal with her 28yr old brother who is a hard

working family man.Gutted for you though.

  8. Thanks Insi

That would be great if you could forward me the builder info.

I have land out in Phu Pan but I would like to be a little closer to the city.

Do you live there full time?

    Thanks again mate

  9. No

You can get an extension of stay for 1 year for retirement, marriage to a Thai, or to support a child that is Thai at immigration.

You then could get a mutiple rentry permit.

    Hi Ubonjoe

I am married to a thai.I will be coming over later on in the year.

I work 3 months out of the year offshore.

Is it possible to come over on a marrige visa?

I dont have a monthly income and proof of tax receipts will be

    hard to come by.

Will a certain amount of money in a Thai bank account be enough

proof for them? If so how much?

I am the man with many Q's

    Many thanks mate.

  10. Hi,

I live in Nong Mek, 8km East of Nong Han on the Udon-Sakhon Nakhon road and have built a house here recently (moved in Late Jan) with a local builder from Nong Hang. We did visit many builders and houses before we decided for this builder.

If you wish we could bring you in contact with this builder, you will need to visit some of the houses he built though.

We used some of the house books you can buy at any good book shop to find what we liked most.

    PM me if you like.

    Hi Tartempion

The book shop you talk about,is this in Sakon nakhon?

May seem like a stupid Q but I want to do as much research as I can

    before I buy.

    Thanks mate

  11. roietjimmy you a builder?

No but this is my house which was just finished. If BeauGeste wanted something like this I would recommend the excellent builder I used. I did design the house and participate daily in it's construction but really not interested in being "a builder".

    Hi Roietjimmy

Who was the builder you used?

And where is he/she based out of?

  12. Hi to all Sakon Nakhon people.

Does anyone have any info on builders or decent sub divisions/estates in Sakon?

Is there a nice or not so nice area to live in Sakon?

Also some idea of a rough price for a western style house (2-3 bedroom).
