  1. I read a book called 'Plentiful Energy' promoting this type of cooling in the integral fast reactor which was around in the 1990's (co-written by 2 scientists who had worked on the project) . The whole program was very well advanced, and the technology was found to have numerous advantages over traditional water cooled reactors. Unfortunately it was cancelled by the Clinton administration of the time. There is a detailed discussion about the pros and cons of liquid sodium v. water cooling in it, which is very worth a read, along with the whole book in fact.
  2. When I lived in Bangkok I used the 'real' Mitsubishi service department to fix my water pump a couple of time. Their service was excellent, the guy would come out with a pile of spares and fix it on the spot. Not expensive either, from memory. No idea if there is a branch in Pattaya, but might be worth a few minutes on google.
  3. My 17 year old son caught Dengue in April. He had hardly been out of the house (in Phrakhanong) let alone Bangkok for many months because of school remote learning. So yes, you can get it in Bangkok, and it is serious. He was in hospital for 5 nights, and for a time his temperature was over 40c. Very dangerous, and obviously very worrying at the time. Thankfully fully recovered and is fine now.
  4. Hi all, As no interest, price reduced to 349,000 THB.
  5. Hi all, One owner from new (me!), genuine very low mileage 44,000 km, as I have been working out of the country a lot of the time. Regular yearly service every year at the Toyota dealership I bought it from. Very good overall condition, although there is a small recent scrape on the rear left lower wing. Happened in a car park while I was inside shopping! 375,000 Thb. PM me for viewing etc.
  6. Sorry, but I am neither trolling or ignorant. A simple google search will show you that arapaima (and a number of other south american species) have been stocked in a number of places in Thailand. I have personally seen them rolling on the surface many times while fishing at Bungamran, and have caught many pacu and amazon red tail catfish over the years at pilot 111. I asked an honest question on what has always in the past been a pleasant and helpful forum. Please keep it civil. Thanks!
  7. Hi everybody, I'll be returning to the UK permanently later in the year, and one thing I want to do before I go is catch an arapaima. I've never really bothered about them before, preferring more affordable (and still enjoyable) places like Pilot 111 and Bungsamran. But I have now decided having some exotic photos to show my mates back home will be a nice keepsake as well as give me some bragging rights! So, If anybody has any recent experiences or suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I'm based in Bangkok, but am retired now so have plenty of spare time for multi day options, such as Hua Hin etc. I don't really want to go much further than that though. I've seen a few videos of Jurassic, which looks amazing but with a price to match. Also Elton view has some good reviews. But I'd much prefer some recent first hand experiences and/or suggestions if anybody has any. Thanks, Steve
  8. I've been sending a fairly full A4 size envelope domestically (Bangkok->Bangkok) via EMS every month for many years. 42 Baht usually. Never had a single problem, invariably arrives the next day if posted in the morning. Great service.
  9. Rama 9 MRT station, entrance to Fortune town very close to exit of MRT station. As you look at this entrance to fortune town, Tesco is at the end of the building on the RH side.
  10. I have been using a shop called 'pro corner' there for a number of years. Have had nothing but good service from the guy, who is (I think) half-thai, half Japanese, and speaks excellent English. He will give you a free evaluation and suggestions. If you are walking from the MRT entrance towards the Tesco/IT city end, when you get to near the end where it splits into a square before the food court, if you look to the left where it splits you will see the shop. The sign is in English. I'm also not 100% sure what floor, I think it is 2 up from the ground floor. I know, I'm hopeless, sorry!
  11. I had a similar problem with a different foreign financial institution (not Australian). I had been receiving the otp via sms to my AIS (08 prefix) number for years, and it suddenly stopped working a few weeks back. Luckily their customer service was very helpful, and they very quickly moved the otp delivery to email, which works better for me to be honest. I had nightmares just thinking about the issues you describe with the two different 'not me' responses, so was lucky I could sort it out with a couple of emails. You have my deepest sympathy.
  12. I don't read or speak good enough Thai to contribute to the language discussion, but I had a similar problem. When I started my job the Thai staff put their interpretation of how my surname should be spelt in Thai on the WP documents. When my son was born a few years later, the hospital put their version on his Thai birth certificate. Surprise, surprise these were different. Fast forward another couple of years to my permanent residence application, and immigration noticed this. We ended up changing my sons surname in Thai (on his birth certificate at the local amphur office) to match my WP version, so that they were all aligned. This was apparently easier than changing my WP and other documents in my name. According to my ex-wife the hospital version was more accurate, but I didn't care one way or the other. My son is also more likely to be using his English name more in the future for work and living outside of Thailand, so he doesn't care either.
  13. Quite a few years ago, (I'm guessing 7 or ???? when I bought my last set of Irons here in Bangkok, I spent several afternoons at the All star golf complex (its on google maps). At the time they had a lot of different brands shops, and all of them allowed you to take a club on to the range and try it. I found the service there was great, and ended up buying a set of Callaway irons that just 'worked' for me after hitting a pile of balls with them. I tried Ping, Titlliest, Taylor Made, Callaway, Mizuno, all with no problem. It is a bit of a pain to get to, but if you want to try before you buy I can recomend the service. However, I haven't been there for a long time, so it may be worth making a phone call before coming up from Pattaya for the day! Hope that helps.
  14. Not sure if this is any help, but if you still have a bank account etc. out of Thailand, you might look at Kraken. I opened the account and transferred money to it to start trading from a UK bank account in less than a couple of hours. I've been trading with it for 6 months, and it all works fine.
  15. Yes exactly, not clear at all. If you read the article it seems to say that this is in addition to the existing m-pass/easypass, if I read it correctly. I have been using an easypass for years, and will not bother with this new extra, unless it links seamlessly with the easypass. Fat chance, considering its Thailand.
  16. It was as slow as a lazy dog first thing this morning, and timed out on me 4 or 5 times before I gave up. Was ok when I tried it later, around 11am. Ok over the week end though.
  17. Interesting. At the time my son was born (17 years ago) I investigated and was told to get the birth registered at the Embassy, which I did. Several different people told me they had done this, and that it should make things easier generally in the UK, not just for passports etc. I have just checked the document we have and at the top it says 'Birth within the district of the British Consul at Bangkok', and after the details the bottom part says that the registration officer confirms that it is a true copy of the entry in the register. I don't know if something has changed since then, or if this is indeed just the document mentioned in the ukgov register-a-birth link further up the thread. I remember it was a simple enough thing to get though, just a trip to the embassy, filled in a form and a week or so later collected the document. My approach was always to do anything like this that might help to make things easier for him in the future. We have certainly used it a couple of times where his UK birth certificate was asked for, and it's always been accepted as one, including for his British passport application. Hope this is of use.
  18. Why don't you just get him a proper British birth certificate? That's what I did for my son, no problem at all. Dual nationality, British and Thai, Thai mother, born in Thailand. I did it at the Embassy just after he was born, admittedly 17 years ago now.
  19. If you are talking Sukhumvit area, I assume you will be renewing your tax at the DLT on Sukhumvit road near the Bang Chak BTS, a bit further up from On-Nut? If so, for the last few years I have got my car inspection done at a place on main Sukhumvit just before the aforementioned DLT place. I do it on the way to the DLT drive through, it takes about 30 minutes in total, including waiting and paying (few hundred baht, can't remember how much), depending on the queue of course. There is a big yellow sign, you cannot really miss it.
  20. Update. The ex has now agreed to reduce the price. 16 million. I doubt you will get anything like the space anywhere near the location for this price.
  21. Hi all, Basic Details: 4 bedroom town house on a private moo baan for sale (Regent 71 Place-check for it on Google maps), within easy walking distance to Phrakhanong BTS and W-District. Approximately 7 minutes walk to the BTS and 3 minutes walk to W-District. 2 Large double bedrooms, 2 average size double bedrooms, all en-suite. Large split level living room with additional toilet. Large Kitchen/Dining room, with another toilet. Smallish garden on 2 sides of the house. It is what we call in the UK an ‘end terrace’ house. 46 sq. wah of land, approximately 250sq m of living area (excludes the garden). The moo baan has 24 hour security, private car parking, leisure area and communal pool shared by the 38 houses. Other information: Great location. Very easy walk to both the BTS and W-district. By car you have fast access to main Sukhumvit (via Soi Pridi 3 and Sukhumvit soi 69), or alternatively via Soi Pridi 5 and Sukhumvit 71. Sukhumvit 71 also allows quick and easy access to the Chalong Rat expressway, approx. 5 mins drive (if no traffic!). Sukhumvit 71 leads directly to Petchaburi and Pattanakarn roads, and further on to Rama 9 which connects with the number 7 motorway to Pattaya. This is a great house in a fabulous location. I have lived in it for 15 years and I don’t really want to sell, but after our recent divorce the ex-wife wants to sell up and move back to buy land and farm in Nakhon Nowhere. I have attached a few (not very good – my problem, not the house!) photos, just to show the basics and give you an idea. The big selling points though are the size and location. If anybody is interested, please PM me. Price: 18 Million THB.
