  1. The requirement is that you have "met in person" which means you have been together at some point in the past two years. So you are OK (assuming you haven't gone the past two years without seeing her). If you met her four years ago, moved back to the USA and hadn't seen her in over 2 yrs, then you would not qualify for a K-1. If you met her for just one day and it was one year and eleven months ago, you would qualify to file a K-1. Clear?

Also, the K1 is for a fiancee with the intention of marrying within 90 days of entering the US and then filing for adjustment of status to obtain a green card. Is this your plan?

If you both reside in Thailand, then a tourist visa may be the way to go (although that might be easier if you two were married).

That is clear, thanks. My intention is not to marry, just to get her over to the USA for a visit. We tried a tourist visa a couple years ago and were denied. My g/f has no money or assets in her name, works a low-paying, seasonal job and on paper does not look like someone to give a tourist visa to. I did open her up a bank account, so maybe that will help. But I have a feeling no matter what I do the tourist visa won't work so I'm looking at other options.

I never thought of marrying to up the probability of getting her tourist visa approved. Do you know for certain that would make a tourist visa easier? Any other thoughts are appreciated.

No that won't make the tourist visa easier. my wife just got one, we live here together in Thailand and she showed house, land, car, dogs, bank and a copy of my Retirement visa and my yellow house book. they want to make sure she has a reason to return....and if you live in the states, with the child, would not give them a warm and fuzzy feeling.... It does open the door for the K1 though....

  2. If you do the figures on the cost of these EFTS to Bangkok Bank versus a normal E*trade Wire at $25 it doesn't appear to be a very good deal IMHO

I'm not sure about E*trade ACH costs -- are they more than $15 per transaction? Otherwise, the $10 BB NY fee (for amts $2001-$50000) saves you $15 over a wire transfer (even more over the majority of banks charging more than $25 for wire transfers). Receiving end fees are the same for both wire and ACH (EFTS)transfers.

    What am I missing?

With SCB I do not get receiving end fees....(wire transfer)

  3. Lopburi... I don't do one of those direct deposit govt paycheck arrangements with BKK B. (One reason is, I don't choose to have to make a bank branch visit every month with ID in order to collect the deposited funds). But since the issue's been raised, maybe you know the answer...

If someone has made the arrangements to have their federal pension or SS payment direct deposited to BKK Bank, with all the requirements that go along with that particular arrangement, does BKK Bank charge the same handling fees on those funds that they do on regular U.S. to Thailand transfers???

i.e., a handling fee by the New York branch, and then a 0.25% (minimum 200 baht, maximum 500 baht) commission on the Thailand end...

Or do they handle the federal direct deposits simply at the day's buying TT rate with no surcharges tacked on?

they are the same...you get the 2 fees.

  4. I use Wells Fargo, but not Bangkok bank. I had a bangkok bank account, but the fees started adding up. Each deposit in the NY BBK was $5 off the top, then another $8-10 when it got here. these were direct deposit check, so I got 2 per month. I do a wire transfer to SCB from Wells Fargo for a fee of $25 no matter how much it is, and SCB does not charge anything at this end. Dong this 1 x pr month and I pick the date of the transfer works out better for me.

  5. Why does it matter where you are born as long as you're a citizen.

I will pass on your opinion to the founding fathers. biggrin.gif

Maybe the law needs to be updated to reflect reality in the 21st century. Back when it was made people didn't fly on holidays several times a year, did they?

Would feel the same way about Kings and Queens....are they still needed in the 21st century.....

  6. What business is it of yours or anyone elses to see someone's school records? I'd block nosey people from seeing my record too.

What's next a daily report on how many times he goes to the loo?

Its no business of mine as I am

    A not American

    B couldn't give a toss

But for an American to ask to see these records as he is the POTUS and there is some question as to the legality of his position Then I would say they have every frigging right !

Also just like the rest of his disciples you cannot give me a justifiable reason why any right minded person with nothing to hide would spend millions of dollars keeping them hidden ?

    Let's review;

How does Mr. Obama's academic record have any bearing on his position as President? What exactly is the legality of his position as you term it in respect to his academic records? Where is there a law that states a President of the USA must make public his academic records? He has not applied for a job in the capacity of a specifically qualified candidate as the Surgeon General might do. Mr. Obama worked as a lawyer before he entered politics and he passed his state bar exam. His bar exam status was public knowledge. The state bar maintains a record of all those that are legally qualified to practice law.

How many U.S. Supreme court justices are compelled to submit their academic records? Yet, these are people that are ruling in the highest court of the USA. . Mr. Obama was considered sufficiently qualified to enrol at Harvard and I think the Harvard admissions office is better suited to decide who enrols at its university than some of the intellectually challenged people demanding access to his records.

Now, if we return to the subject of the academic records, what is the reason why the general public should be given access to personal information of that nature? What business is it of anyone's to know if he received an A in constituional law? I hope Obama keeps fighting the demands for his academic records because he's also acting to protect the right to privacy for millions of people. The fact of the matter is that this latest dispute comes from the same people claiming that he wasn't a natural born U.S. citizen. Now that they have lost the arguement over his origin, they are refocusing on an invasion of his privacy. it is just a roundabout way for some people to say that he graduated with a J.D. from Harvard magna laude because he was black and benefited from affirmative action. Sour grapes from losers. Jealous losers at that.

I don't think the issues is his grades as much as how he registered, did he registar as a forgein student, I could be wrong, but what I have seen it more along these lines not his grades....

  7. [

"Network traffic" meaning something like: Too many users at any given time and not enough capacity of the provider to handle the amount of traffic ?

Also I heard, that it makes a big difference how far away the next "tower" is (?)

    Thanks & cheers.

yes that is network traffic, signal stregth is for the distance to the tower,

  8. I use a dongle, have an antenna on the house to help with the signal.....rain is theleast of my worry, mostly the network traffic in the rural areas….

  9. what I do, is I keep my US bank, I set up a bank account here, SCB, and did a recurring wire with my bank in the US before I moved. then when I need money, make a phone call, and the money is moved here no problem, set it up for moving US dollars, better rate here. I did the Bangkok bank but the fees per month I thought was to high, a fee for having a account in NY, then fees when the money hit here, SCB does not charge fees, and my bank in the US is $25 for any amount....

  10. My wife had her interview today, we arrived at 6:30 for a 8:00 appointment, No need for that, never listen to Thais.... you get there about 30-45 minutes early, they come out and put the times together, and check paperwork, then like cattle they are taken in. She was finished about 10:30 with her 2 minute interview. But all is good, Seen several people not pass, you can tell when they come out still with their passport.

If you wife goes, make sure she takes your yellow book and passport to show them that you live here.

  11. Don't forget the taxes in the U.S. There's property tax (state, city, county, community college, water district, fire district, limited district, etc.) ranging from about US $5,000 to $10,000 per year depending on where you live, sales taxes (State & city) 8.25% of most anything you buy, income taxes (how much do you make?- fine send it in), city franchise taxes on your land line, cell phone and cable bill, fees on your water and sewer bills so that average water/sewer bill is $115 per month, franchise taxes on you natural gas bill, road taxes on your gasoline, federal excise taxes on tires you buy, etc. Even though Texas does not have a state or city income tax like many places in the U.S., I guess that by living in the state of Taxus...at least 25%+ of my annual expenses are taxes. How much are your taxes in Thailand?

Understand, but for that tax you do get something in return. Here you pay VAT at 7% on everything, US income tax, pay it anyway here or there, same. you pay VAT on cell phone, UBC. Water is cheap here, but so the quality. I never had taxes on property or water.sewer has high as you are claiming...different part of the states I guess.
