House services / builders /repais etc

Any Store (that doesnt display prices)

    Csr/bike services

    Hospitals / Dentist / Vet

Just about anything that involves cash that doesnt have a ticketed displayed price I find an attempt is made to extract more money if you are not Thai.

    That's about right.

One time though, i had the satisfaction to see a couple, probably from Bkk, being overcharged at the local mom&pop store.

I am quoting Thai law and not my opinion . The finger of guilt could be pointed at the dog owner , the guardian of the girl,  the local neighborhood  and authorities who fail to address the soi dog problem .

If I had been the parent the death of the dog would be my first action and probably not the last .

Well, i think the parents have to share part of the guilt too.

While is good for the little children to enjoy a lot of freedom, the parents should be reasonably sure that the environment is safe.

I think from 0 to 6/7 years of age a child is not responsible, the parents have to carry 100% of the responsibility.

I wouldn't sanction them anyway, the loss of the poor child is painful enough.

I have a set of high end clippers and self crop my hair monthly but I cannot get a cut as good as hers.

Maybe if I tried struggling with myself during my haircuts I would get a better result.

Why not contact the Iranians, guess the guy needs some extra money now:coffee1:

Seriously, the girl could have spent half an hour with a hairdresser before taking the pictures.

if this was an Ex American or British boyfriend, i am sure many here will be questioning the story of the Thai girlfriend.

But bc the guy was Iranian, no questions! Bc he is from Iran and it is a bad place and they are all bad people?

No, you are prejudiced. and this is followed by nonsense generalizations plus discriminating comments.

    shame.

I never heard that Iranians were all saints.

Lots of degrees letters behind one’s name is no guarantee of honesty and high moral standards.

All those letters do is get you your first job.

Remember it was not long ago, relatively, that almost all scientists in the world claimed (“consensus”) that the continents did not move, and were fixed in place. In elementary school in the 1950’s we were still taught that it was only coincidence that it looked like Africa and Europe and North America and South America might have once been joined together.

Agree on the first part of your post.

In the 60s we were told that S.America and Africa were once united, i never took it for granted, and apparently they are still debating about that.

Since you are not a scientist perhaps it's best to take for granted that what people who are scientists say is true, unless of course you don't trust anyone or anything, in which case there's no point in enjoining any debate on any subject.

Nope, i don't take for granted what people who call themselves scientists say.

Of course a degree of trust is necessary to enjoy a debate, as you say, still i prefer to remain very skeptical about a few things.

Yeah all the bellboy had to do is ask meter/no meter until he found the 3rd taxi himself.

I'd expect that from a 5 star hotel, to hire bellboys intelligent enough to do so. If they don't, it's the hotel's fault in recruiting.

But you should not tell them, otherwise they lose face :whistling:

Well apparently, something to do with Quantum Mechanics/Physics....reality consists of multi-verses. Universes without end. And we already exist in some of them, as well as this one.

It’s been a while since I read about it. I should spend some time and learn the latest in the subject.

Funny how Theravada Buddhism seems to have no big problem with Quantum Mechanics/Physics.

yep, maybe we are a bit off topic, but in the end we should not worry too much for climate change, as long as we practice self awareness.

I grew up in Hong Kong, lived there 35 years and so grew up with the concept of face.   To me face is about many things, the simplest is not making someone look foolish especially in front of other people.   That applies when you and the other person are the same age and social level.

A more serious loss of face would be when the other person is older or your superior, so for example you would never question instructions or ideas put forward by your boss, even if you thought he was wrong.  Doing so would make him lose face you would result in your career hitting a roadblock.

Losing your temper is a loss of face for you, as it makes people around you embarrassed for your lack of self control.

There are certain losses of face that don't bother me and others that I take very seriously.  It depends on the situation.

The nuances of face are complex, but not limited to Asian countries.  In the West most people subconsciously try to avoid making other people look stupid, or doing things that make themselves look stupid.

    Good post.

As you say, the nuances of face are complex, and there are probably lots of grey areas.

I guess that living in Asia makes one, slowly but steadily, more and more 'face' conscious.

The Sun will eventually go Nova and reduce the Earth to not much more than a melted over lump of iron and rock.

But even before that.... in only about 500 million years... the Sun will increase in temperature enough that it will be too hot on Earth for life.

We neet to develope Interstellar and Integalactic space travel before then.  Or perhaps ways to "jump" to other alternate universes capable of sustaining our form of life.

    You mean parallel universes ?

If a taxi that doesn't want to use it's meter drives upto the 5 star hotel, do you think that is the fault of the bell boy?

How would he know that "all taxis around here don't do meter"?

You must have very high blood pressure getting worked up about something so trivial as having to try 3 cabs before one accepts the fare on it's meter.

Well, maybe he's not used to travel in Thailand and Asia as you or me.

After a few years travelling around Thailand, in this case, you become street-smart, and you learn not to take a 'yes' as a 'yes' , but more likely as a 'maybe'.

Another thing i learned, every time i enter a taxi, is to be sure that the driver knows exactly where i want to go, because if he takes me to the wrong place, it's my fault.

I think what a lot of the problems is that many falang do not get out and mix with other falangs so that when something like a marriage breakdown they have got no one that they can talk to. I believe that every falang should try and have other falangs as friends but I do know that there are some on here that are against that type of thing, so it would be interesting to see how they would cope with no one to talk things over with. Every day I see falangs in shopping centres and some will say hello and others just stick their nose in the air and think they are better than any other falang, but will they be able to handle a sudden marriage breakdown with no one to talk to.

Very true, but i guess many people fall into difficult relationship just because they don't have any trusted friend to talk to.

It can be a vicious circle.

But in Asia, where people try to maintain harmony by going out of their way to not publicly humiliate someone, a person engaged in such behavior would be looked down upon.

All seems fair and nice, but would you spare a thought for the victims of the "face" obsession ?

Like patriotism and religious faith, the "face" thing has a dark side when people become obsessed with that.
