Asian "face" is simply Western "reputation" but the anonymity of Western society reduces the importance of reputation. Try losing face in a small European or English village. You'll understand the importance of it.

Although i understand what you mean, and i've lived in small villages most of my time, 'face' and 'reputation' can have the same meaning sometimes, and sometimes not.

I know people who have a big face, but a bad reputation.

Why is this subject approached in a manner that it only applies to the Thai people.

Have you never back home seen fights over the same thing...one person making a "show" of another or making him look stupid. How many Farangs will Never admit that they could possibly have been wrong about something. Older ones with totally "closed" minds.

What about our so called "Leaders"....politicians. Have you ever heard one say, in an interview for example...."You know what ..you have a good point there, I never looked at it that way...now I see that you are correct and I had got it wrong"?

I think you are right to point out that the "face thing" exists in the west and most likely everywhere.

I also don't see it as completely negative.

In my country, for example, it's very bad etiquette to punish your children in front of others, as they might deserve the punishment, but not a public humiliation.

As another poster said he may well have had depression, let me tell you no amount of money, property,or love can stop it i know this well i have black spells than can last for days, this is no fun at all for your wife/gf,many Thai's don't understand it,from the sound of this the poor guy was distraught and killed himself,at least now he is at peace,a truly tragic event.

Yes, he could have been depressed or terminally ill for what we know, we should be careful with assumptions.

witnessed this lot in Bangkok,  just go up to a girl and try to put their tongues down their throat, brought up to treat women as second class. and bring that shit here, nice one girl

The last time i was in Pattaya, some 12 years ago, i was walking down the street, and watching girls sitting in the bars.

Suddenly, a bus parked in front, and some 50/60 tourists, i will omit their nationality, swarmed down from the bus, and started grabbing girls as if they were seafood at a buffet.

    Disgusting.

Which is the root of the problem. The South Asians travel abroad an think that they can treat women the same way as they do in their own countries.

Most bar girls in Pattaya will tell you horror stories about Indians in Pattaya. I've seen a few unpleasant incidents myself.

That's one of the reasons i don't like bars anymore, too many sad stories behind the ubiquitous smiles.

If it's the teachers fault then we can work out the thinking behind this.

Lets examine it a little. The teacher has been fired.

Why would the teacher be fired for what is surely a one off and completely unexpected incident ?

I can only think of one reason the teacher would be held responsible and that's because something like this is not completely unexpected.

For sure something like this could have happened many times, and conveniently swept under the carpet.

Bullyism in various forms has always existed, i guess.

Only the magnetic poles will shift, over a great length of time. As a matter of fact they are always shifting, but flipping north to south will happen over a few thousand years very gradually. It doesn’t happen overnight. Our ancestors were walking around last time it happened. Massive destruction doesn’t happen. So don’t worry about it.

You have a very unreal imagination and watch too many Hollywood disaster movies.

I don't watch many movies, but i have read a few theories which are still debated among the scientists.

As far as i know, the frozen mammoths found in Siberia are yet to be convincingly explained.

There are many legends of massive destruction, and scientific evidence of it.

Well, my point, regarding this topic is that, whether humans are fully or partially responsible for climate change, our existence is based on many factors which we can't control.

This indeed is a horrific, unforgivable crime indeed.

But what surprises me is when adults here in comment and bash Thailand and it's people as if this type of crime, or worse, doesn't happen in their homeland. Scum, in human form exists everywhere.

No, I dont condone this crime in any way.

True, it can happen everywhere, perhaps in western countries the justice system is just a bit more reliable; still, it's the first time i hear about teens raping a 4 years old.

I wish we could end this stupid 'RIP' nonsense.  They are dead, they aren't resting.  They don't have some way of hearing your RIP sentiment and then acting upon it.  They are either reduced to cinders or rotting in earth.

Please can we say something sensible and of this world, perhaps like, "I hope they did not suffer too much, and that their families find the strength to continue".

Both  'RIP' and  "I hope they did not suffer too much, and that their families find the strength to continue", are ways to show compassion for the victims, including their relatives.

'RIP' is the short way to show compassion, personally, even if i didn't know the victims, these kind of news, specially when little children are the victims, make me so sad that, more often than not, i have no words at all.
