  1. I think KBB would like to know who will attend so he can approach TV and see if they will partially sponsor the event.

If everyone stops the bickering and just post if they will attend by themselves or with a partner he will have a idea,

He can then contact TV and if they are interested start a new topic on a official get together

This makes good sense as this topic is turning into the usual pissing contest which normally results in the topic being closed. Perhaps the mods should only allow posts related to those who are genuinely interested in the event.

  2. Last time I renewed I had medical certificate in hand & they said I did not need it although my twin daughters did need one when they first got their licence late last year. I do not recall ever being asked for proof of residence.

  3. I always thought of Soi Bangla as the boulevard of broken dreams. I have not been on the road behind JC for quite a while but imagined the whole road would be built the same as the bit on the southern end with the northern end being where the "tunnel" will emerge. Up until the late 90's Patong still had a chance to become a world class destination but the rampant greed put paid to that.

  4. The hill in Phuket town with the phone, TV towers on top of it, drive them up to the top and let them ride down.

Very little traffic, monkeys and great views, you may have to check the monkeys out they seemed friendly enough last time we were there

Good place for a picnic there is also a restaurant half way down the hill..

Some of those monkeys have been known to attack people.

  5. If you go early morning you can walk back past the SCB & enjoy the best roti in Phuket while you wait.

A bit off topic, but, that's the second best roti in town. I know, I've been to most of the roti places.

Still the best in my opinion is Abdul's on Thalang Road.

Should we start a roti thread as the whole Phuke Forum is quite boring of late although there is no chance to get a best shopping cart thread going considering something similar was canned a while back but Big C have the best & Lotus the worst? Anyway, I have not tried Abdul's so cannot judge but the other is very handy while awaiting windshield repair.

  6. what is the purpose of the get together and what do foreign residents stand to benefit or learn from the meeting to improve their well beeing such as new immigration laws, usefiul contacts, debates, clarifications etc

There are other groups such as IBAP which fulfill that but the TV get together IMO is to get to know some members personally & have a social outing. Peter tried it by having a some lunch get togethers but his idea was to meet couples of similar interests.

  7. I need to be clearer. I need a complete replacement. Anyone have the number to the shop?

I don't have the number but they generally have on the shelf windshields for all the main car models. Livin could be referring to shop which is after you turn right at the above mentioned junction but this shop has been closed for a long time. The one I mentioned is opposite Esso but back towards the bank a bit.

  8. If you go from Chalong on Chao Fa East to Phuket Town & you see Siam Commercial Bank on the left which is before the junction with the Esso petrol station. Just past SCB, towards the junction & on the same side is a small shop which does windscreen replacements & film if you need it. They can do it while you wait & the pricing is fair or at least it used to be. If you go early morning you can walk back past the SCB & enjoy the best roti in Phuket while you wait.

  9. I remember my early days in Thailand & watching kids walk out of a clinic with several bottles of coloured water where cheap paracetamol would have sufficed. It only served to give a warm fuzzy feeling to the parents & to the clinic's coffers.

It never ceases to amaze me at the way people rort the system. Going out of their way to get prescription drugs in order to sell should be some kind of criminal misappropriation & the miscreants charged accordingly. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for the doctors to close ranks on this as I am sure many of them are guilty of getting commissions for prescribing certain drugs. BTW the English in that article is deplorable.

  10. Some years ago I went to a world expo in Brisbane which turned out to be quite spectacular. There were, however, some long queues waiting to get into some of the exhibitions. I particularly remember walking in backwards through the exit of the French pavillion & no one stopped me.

  11. It does clearly state in the article that it's his car.

Some these 'famous' monks pull in 10's of millions of baht a month through donations and amulet sales.

We could get onto the topic of amulets and some of the money they command but that would be dragging this off topic.

Yes I did read the article but not sure if you have seen the photo & yes I understand there are many monks & temples making vast sums of money & yes we all know how liberal with the "facts" are the reporters from our esteemed newspaper. There is one particular monk who occasionally comes up our soi asking for money & I do not believe he is a real monk.

  12. On the local cable channel there has always been a fair amount of rugby shown on Australia Network but I fear this year will not be the same especially for the World Cup. Astro could be the best bet as they have been showing 6 Nations, I saw it on cable, but will they be showing the World Cup which would be great to know in advance as then I might consider getting a satellite dish.

  13. There was a big thread on them last year. It seemed there were some dodgy dealings surrounding this group but whether it was of their own making or caused by someone else I have not a clue. Perhaps they have been forced to closed down or have fled the scene as it seemed there would be court cases pending. It would be interesting for someone to comment who actually has dealings with them or has in the past.

  14. Think it was around 6000 when the missus managed to pry my fist open and start buying gold so I guess over the years it is an investment.:)

8000 Baht when I started loosening up. Despite the opinion of some on this forum - listening to our Thai wiveson the wisdom of investing in "Thai gold" whilst in Thailand may be a good idea every now and then. ;)

I still get complaints as to why I did not buy some for her birthday a couple of years ago when the price had dropped to 12,900. However, I guess the other gold which she has averaged out at around 7,000 to 9,000 when purchased so at the current rate it is a good investment. In the late 70s gold spiked up to around $800 but then dropped to around $300 several years later. It then meandered in the 300 to 500 range until the early 2000s & apart from a big dip a couple of years ago it has continued to climb. I feel it will drop again but have no idea when.

  15. valentine, i found the australian version (vitamin B) at a little pharmacy on soi saiyuan in nai harn (next to ocean geo divers on the way to the beach). they cost me 210 THB.

Thanks & glad you had success. Next time I am down that way I will check it out.

  16. Of course my fundamental question is what was their real reason for going there? Was he an idiot stooge prompted by somebody to go and provoke the Cambodians with some promise of something if he did that? Was he a rogue operation? Was he just seeking attention? Was he a misguided patriot thinking this would somehow help Thailand?

Whether the Spy charges are legitmate or not, I don't know, and that is secondary to the issue. He and the others knew they were going to Cambodia, they knew they were in Cambodia. I am sure Thailand would not like it if somebody went into Thailand without proper documentation or permission, i.e. visas.

I hope the man is content with his situation. It sure seems like he was determined to go to Cambodia for whatever reason.

From his statements he seems to firmly believe he was in Thai territory regardless of any past agreements or ongoing negotiations & because of this does not believe he is guilty of any crime. In that his actions were purely nationalistic. IMO it was an extremely foolhardy move which has escalated tensions on the border & some seem to be quite happy to go to war over it. <deleted> are they thinking, not rationally. There always seems to be some conspiracy or ulterior motive for all things political & quite possibly the case here. If he showed some remorse right at the start he would probably be home right now. Despite that the espionage verdict is spurious at best.
