  3. The Biden administration has asked the Supreme Court to restore full access to an abortion drug after a lower court imposed restrictions on its use. The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed an emergency appeal to restore access to mifepristone, the drug used in more than half of all US abortions. The case has nationwide ramifications not only for millions of women but also on the future of drug approvals. READ MORE https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65260880
  4. WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump has asked a federal appeals court to take immediate action to block former Vice President Mike Pence from testifying in the Justice Department’s probe into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. Trump filed an appeal earlier this week in the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington, and on Friday he asked the court to take immediate action. The motion, which is under seal, is for a stay of a lower court judge's ruling requiring Pence to testify and comply with a subpoena from special counsel Jack Smith, who is investigating Trump's role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election. 5. Former President Donald Trump vowed to defend and expand gun-owners rights in a speech to the National Rifle Association's annual meeting here Friday. "I was proud to be the most pro-gun, pro-Second Amendment president you've ever had in the White House," Trump said to an audience that leapt to its feet, cheered and chanted "U-S-A" when he was introduced. "And with your support in 2024, I will be your loyal friend and fearless champion once again as the 47th president of the United States." 6. Daniel Perry, the man whose prospective life sentence the Texas governor indicated he would nullify last weekend, wrote of wanting to kill protesters in the years before he was convicted of killing a man at a 2020 Black Lives Matter protest in Austin, a newly released set of court documents show. The 76-page filing, unsealed by a Travis County judge on Thursday, is stuffed with private messages and social media posts in which Perry shared racist “white power” memes and talked of a desire to hunt and kill people. “Black Lives Matter is racist to white people… It is official I am racist because I do not agree with people acting like monkeys,” Perry wrote in one message, according to the Austin American-Statesman. 7. A major security breach from the Pentagon leading to the disclosure of military documents has shone the spotlight on how the US looks after its secrets. A 21-year-old has been arrested in the latest investigation. But the new revelations are far from the first high-profile classified leaks to embarrass the US. Here are some of the other cases that have hit the headlines in recent years. 8. Ghost guns are coming under fire from gun-control advocates. But why are these weapons so difficult to trace? And can anything be done to keep them from getting into the wrong hands? Manuel Yambo had never heard of a "ghost" gun until his 16-year-old daughter was killed by one. He was at home, getting ready for work, when he got a call that every parent dreads. 9. Florida Republicans are pushing forward a bill that seeks to ban drag shows from allowing someone under the age of 18 to be in attendance. But the bill is so vaguely worded, using the term “adult live performance,” that even Republican lawmakers have admitted it would prevent a high school kid from watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show or even the musical Hair. The bill also explicitly targets Pride parades and celebrations, by preventing a government entity from issuing permits to an organization that may put on such a performance. https://newrepublic.com/post/171638/floridas-anti-drag-bill-extreme-ban-rocky-horror-picture-show-hair-musical

  11. UPDATE: Billionaire Harlan Crow Bought Property From Clarence Thomas. The Justice Didn’t Disclose the Deal. The transaction marks the first known instance of money flowing from the Republican megadonor to the Supreme Court justice. The Crow company bought the properties for $133,363 from three co-owners — Thomas, his mother and the family of Thomas’ late brother, according to a state tax document and a deed dated Oct. 15, 2014, filed at the Chatham County courthouse. A federal disclosure law passed after Watergate requires justices and other officials to disclose the details of most real estate sales over $1,000. Thomas never disclosed his sale of the Savannah properties. That appears to be a violation of the law, four ethics law experts told ProPublica. https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-harlan-crow-real-estate-scotus
  12. The Florida House of Representatives on Thursday passed a six-week abortion ban that would replace the state's 15-week ban. The bill now heads to the governor's desk for his signature. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has said he would sign a six-week ban should it be sent to his desk. The ban would prohibit all abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, before most women know they are pregnant. 13. During debate Tuesday on a bill banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors, Missouri State Senator Mike Moon suggested children as young as 12 should have the right to marry with parental permission. "Do you know any kids who have been married at age 12? I do. And guess what? They're still married," Moon said in response to questioning by Democratic state Representative Peter Merideth. A clip of the interaction has garnered attention on social media. READ MORE https://news.yahoo.com/sen-mike-moon-reiterates-support-160408202.html
  14. The numbers: U.S. wholesale prices sank 0.5% in March to mark the biggest decline in almost three years, potentially a sign of further easing in inflation in the months ahead. Economists polled by the Wall Street Journal had forecast no change in the producer price index. The drop last month was the biggest since the start of the pandemic in early 2020. 15. My roots in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania run deep. Growing up here it was rare to see businesses open on Sundays. It was the Lord’s Day. We spent the morning in church, the afternoon with family, and honored God by resting from our regular labor—something God commanded we do in the fourth of the Ten Commandments. I never thought I would lose my job for honoring the Lord’s Day. As I matured, I looked for jobs that would respect the Lord’s Day. The United States Postal Service seemed a perfect fit. 16. Former President Donald Trump is expected to answer questions Thursday during his second deposition at the offices of New York Attorney General Letitia James, according to a source familiar with his legal team's planning. Trump previously invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 400 times during an August 2022 deposition, about a month before James' office sued Trump, three of his children, and their company, alleging years of fraud. This deposition, which is part of the civil pretrial discovery process, is expected to go differently, with Trump declining to invoke the Fifth, the source said. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-deposition-new-york-city-today-letitia-james-fraud-lawsuit/
  17. Federal prosecutors probing the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol have in recent weeks sought a wide range of documents related to fundraising after the 2020 election, looking to determine if Trump or his advisers scammed donors by using false claims about voter fraud to raise money, eight people familiar with the new inquiries said. Special counsel Jack Smith’s office has sent subpoenas in recent weeks to Trump advisers and former campaign aides, Republican operatives and other consultants involved in the 2020 presidential campaign, the people said. They have also heard testimony from some of these figures in front of a Washington grand jury, some of the people said. 18. Already drowning in legal trouble from his recent arrest and two other potential criminal indictments on the horizon, former President Donald Trump continues to delay the New York attorney general’s attempt to bankrupt him—this time, by finding Republican-friendly accountants in Texas. His family company, the Trump Organization, was forced to scramble and find new accountants early last year amid accusations it regularly faked business records to inflate assets. The shunned Trumps settled on Whitley Penn, a relatively unknown accounting firm that doesn’t even rank among the “Big Four”—not even among the big four in North Texas.
