  1. April 4 (UPI) -- The March death of a 28-year-old Black man who died while being admitted in police custody to the hospital has been ruled a homicide, officials said Monday. Irvo Otieno died March 6 while police were attempting to admit him to the Central State Hospital in Dinwiddie County, Va., for treatment. Video of the incident released late last month shows sheriff's deputies and medial staff drag a handcuffed Otieno into a room at the medical facility before upwards of 10 people pile on top of him for more than 10 minutes as he died. https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2023/04/04/Irvo-Otieno-death-ruled-homicide/1981680578542/

  3. Last Friday, the Commerce Department released its monthly update on personal income and spending, and as it does every month, the latest release, covering February, includes data on a key measure of inflation that’s closely watched by the Fed: the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, both in its overall “headline” version and an array of variants. Over the past two years, we’ve gotten used to hearing about record-breaking inflation readings; last June, for example, the Consumer Price Index rose at its fastest twelve-month rate — 8.9 percent — since the peak of the 1970s–early 1980s inflation wave that was finally brought to an end by former Fed chair Paul Volcker’s brutal reign of tight money. But this month’s record is a little different. READ MORE https://jacobin.com/2023/04/inflation-falling-volcker-summers-housing-pce-cpi

  6. Exclusive: Trump to be charged Tuesday with 34 felony counts, but spared handcuffs and mug shot Donald Trump will be placed under arrest on Tuesday and informed that he has been charged with 34 felony counts for falsification of business records, according to a source who has been briefed on the procedures for the arraignment of the former president. A New York City Police arrest report summarizing the charges against Trump will then be prepared and entered into the court system before he is led into a courtroom to be formally arraigned on the charges, none of which are misdemeanors. But, the source said, Trump will not be put in handcuffs, placed in a jail cell or subjected to a mug shot — typical procedures even for white-collar defendants until a judge has weighed in on pretrial conditions. https://news.yahoo.com/exclusive-trump-to-be-charged-tuesday-with-34-felony-counts-but-spared-handcuffs-and-mug-shot-001241750.html
  7. Trump Should Not Take the Stand, Lacks 'All Self-Control': Bill Barr While speaking on Fox News Sunday, Barr was asked if he would advise Trump to take the stand. Barr responded, "generally I think it's a bad idea to go on the stand, I think it is a particularly bad idea for Trump because he lacks all self-control." While speaking to Newsweek, trial attorney Jim Hattaway said, "Trump will likely not take the stand, as I advise my clients, every word out of your mouth is a bullet that can be fired back at you, in Trump's case, it would be a machine gun of incriminating statements." "If a client is going to testify, they have to know everything about the case, they have to be prepared for every contingency that the prosecutor will throw at them. Trump doesn't have that ability," Hattaway continued. https://www.newsweek.com/trump-should-not-take-stand-lacks-all-self-control-bill-barr-1792061
  8. Former President Donald Trump has arrived in New York City a day before he is expected to turn himself in to law enforcement and face more than 30 criminal charges in a Manhattan court following last week's historic grand jury indictment. Trump's lawyers told a New York judge Monday they oppose the request by media outlets to broadcast Tuesday's arraignment. The judge said he expects to issue a decision tonight. Several media outlets, including CNN, have also asked the judge to make the indictment public. 9. Former President Donald Trump has hired a top white-collar criminal defense lawyer and former federal prosecutor, Todd Blanche, as his lead counsel to handle the Manhattan district attorney’s criminal indictment of the former president. Blanche, until recently a partner at law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, said in an email obtained by POLITICO that he was resigning from the firm because “I have been asked to represent Trump in the recently charged DA case, and after much thought/consideration, I have decided it is the best thing for me to do and an opportunity I should not pass up.” Blanche declined to comment Monday. Trump is also represented in the case by Susan Necheles and Joe Tacopina, lawyers who represented him during the investigation that led to the indictment. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/04/03/trump-todd-blanche-indictment-attorney-00090157

  13. Parents who harshly discipline their young children may be putting them on a path toward lasting mental health symptoms, a new study suggests. Researchers found that among 7,500 children followed from age 3 to 9, about 10% fell into a "high risk" group where mental health symptoms -- ranging from persistent sadness to acting out -- worsened over the years and children whose parents often used harsh discipline, including yelling or physical punishment, were about 50% more likely than their peers to end up in that group. Experts said the findings, published recently in the journal Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences, underscore an important reality: Some parents need to learn better strategies for managing young children's behavior. https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2023/04/03/parenting-mental-health-children/9751680272384/
  14. On 3 April 1973, Marty Cooper stood on a corner of Sixth Avenue in New York and took a phone book from his pocket. He then punched a number into a large, cream-coloured device and put it to his ear while passers-by stared at him. Mr Cooper, an engineer at Motorola, rang his counterpart at rival firm Bell Laboratories, to triumphantly tell him he was calling from "a personal, handheld, portable cell phone". https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-65112048

  16. Justice Department and FBI investigators have amassed fresh evidence pointing to possible obstruction by former president Donald Trump in the investigation into top-secret documents found at his Mar-a-Lago home, according to people familiar with the matter. The additional evidence comes as investigators have used emails and text messages from a former Trump aide to help understand key moments last year, said the people, who like others interviewed for this article spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing criminal investigation. The new details highlight the degree to which special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the potential mishandling of hundreds of classified national security papers at Trump’s Florida home and private club has come to focus on the obstruction elements of the case — whether the former president took or directed actions to impede government efforts to collect all the sensitive records. https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/04/02/trump-mar-a-lago-obstruction-classified/ READ MORE (no paywall)

  19. A federal judge in Texas ruled that at least 12 books removed from public libraries by Llano County officials, many because of their LGBTQ and racial content, must be placed back onto shelves within 24 hours, according to an order filed Thursday. Seven residents sued county officials in April 2022, claiming their First and 14th Amendment rights were violated when books deemed inappropriate by some people in the community and Republican lawmakers were removed from public libraries or access was restricted. The lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas in San Antonio claimed county officials removed books from the shelves of the three-branch public library system “because they disagree with the ideas within them” and terminated access to thousands of digital books because they could not ban two specific titles. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/04/01/us/texas-book-ban-removed-library-replaced-judge/index.html

  24. Vladimir Putin's decision to forward deploy tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus has made headlines around the world - but forward-basing of nuclear weapons has limited military benefit. Intercontinental ballistic missiles have virtually unlimited range, so forward-deploying nuclear weapons to Belarus territory is not driven by military necessity. However, the primary benefit is maintaining the omnipresent threat of nuclear confrontation at the forefront of Western leaders' minds, to deter continued western military support for Ukraine. https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-war-the-boy-who-cried-wolf-should-putins-nuclear-threat-be-believed-12846648
  25. A judge on Friday refused to dismiss Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.6bn defamation lawsuit against Fox News, clearing the way for the case to proceed to trial beginning in mid-April. The judge denied Fox’s motion for summary judgment, instead granting Dominion’s motion in part. “The evidence developed in this civil proceeding demonstrates that is CRYSTAL clear that none of the Statements relating to Dominion about the 2020 election are true,” the judge wrote, “therefore, the Court will grant summary judgment in favor of Dominion on the element of falsity.” https://www.theguardian.com/media/2023/mar/31/fox-news-dominion-voting-systems-case-trial
