  3. Was talking to a guy today who told me that, though this idea has turned into a fad, it was started by people who had accidents especially fatal ones and believed a ghost of the accident followed them.

This doll is to warn off would be ghosts.

  4. Again statistics from Thailand can be taken with a grain of salt( not credible) just like the 2% unemployment figure.

I would love to find out where they get all these figures from.

I'm sure it isn't accurate nor does it take into consideration all the people who roll their own or the imported cigarettes.

  5. I have seen many 3-4" dolls hanging from cars/pickups near there back bumper underneath.

Why, it kinda looks satanic to me. I have run over many of these dolls that have dropped

off there hanging place. What is the deal with this ritual???? :o

Have seen them often and thought they were an anti static type of device.

  6. hello takingavacation

please pm me again and give me your

    phone number.

    thank you

    khun naamjai

Don't know if the moderator will allow it but here are some websites for accomodation in Chiang Rai.

    www.thailandpropertysolutions.com

    www.adventure1.com

but I would advise coming here, getting a cheap guest house for a few days and check it out yourself.

Most of the Thai lets will not be on any website.

  7. I'm afraid that a life experience degree is just as useless as a fake degree.

Any kind of degree that you get without, at least a few years study wouldn't be any good.

If you have a TEFL and a few years experience then you should have a reasonable chance of getting a job.

Government schools are easier because they have the clout with the local labour office to get a work permit.

Also there are plenty of private language schools who employ anybody, without qualification if your face and accent fit.

Good luck in your job search

  8. Thai Rak Thai escapes dissolution

    BangkokPost.com

The Thai Rak Thai party was aquitted of charges that it cheated in the April, 2006 general election, and will not be dissolved, the Constitution Tribunal ruled

Judges said the party had "done a lot of good for Thailand" and also said that the barrier for dissolving a party was set high by the 1997 constitution and by human rights standards.

Thank God there's some sanity left in this country.

    Your full of crap.

    The verdict isn't in yet.

  9. A lot happening in Chiang Rai in the near future.

The Lychee and Fruit fair starts on the 1st May until 3rd May( not sure of location)

also there is an expo(trade stalls) open for two weeks near the flower market.

Little Duck hotel has a computer exhibition from 1st to 3rdMay.

  10. Nice to see this post which I originally started, re-activated.

Ohhh, are you and Limbo same person? Sorry, I did not know!

Why do you ask such a stupid question :o when you personally know both people?

  11. Guinness good for you - official

The old advertising slogan "Guinness is Good for You" may be true after all, according to researchers.

A pint of the black stuff a day may work as well as an aspirin to prevent heart clots that raise the risk of heart attacks.

Drinking lager does not yield the same benefits, experts from Wisconsin University told a conference in the US.

Guinness were told to stop using the slogan decades ago - and the firm still makes no health claims for the drink.

The Wisconsin team tested the health-giving properties of stout against lager by giving it to dogs who had narrowed arteries similar to those in heart disease.

They found that those given the Guinness had reduced clotting activity in their blood, but not those given lager.

    Heart trigger

Clotting is important for patients who are at risk of a heart attack because they have hardened arteries.

A heart attack is triggered when a clot lodges in one of these arteries supplying the heart.

Many patients are prescribed low-dose aspirin as this cuts the ability of the blood to form these dangerous clots.

The researchers told a meeting of the American Heart Association in Orlando, Florida, that the most benefit they saw was from 24 fluid ounces of Guinness - just over a pint - taken at mealtimes.

We already know that most of the clotting effects are due to the alcohol itself, rather than any other ingredients

    Spokesman, Brewing Research International

They believe that "antioxidant compounds" in the Guinness, similar to those found in certain fruits and vegetables, are responsible for the health benefits because they slow down the deposit of harmful cholesterol on the artery walls.

However, Diageo, the company that now manufactures Guinness, said: "We never make any medical claims for our drinks."

The company now runs advertisements that call for "responsible drinking".

A spokesman for Brewing Research International, which conducts research for the industry, said she would be "wary" of placing the health benefits of any alcohol brand above another.

She said: "We already know that most of the clotting effects are due to the alcohol itself, rather than any other ingredients.

"It is possible that there is an extra effect due to the antioxidants in Guinness - but I would like to see this research repeated."

She said that reviving the old adverts for Guinness might be problematic - at least in the EU.

Draft legislation could outlaw any health claims in adverts for alcohol in Europe, she said.

    Feelgood factor

The original campaign in the 1920s stemmed from market research - when people told the company that they felt good after their pint, the slogan was born.

In England, post-operative patients used to be given Guinness, as were blood donors, because of its high iron content. This practice continues in Ireland.

Pregnant women and nursing mothers were at one stage advised to drink Guinness - the present advice is against this.

The UK is still the largest market in the world for Guinness, although the drink does not feature in the UK's top ten beer brands according to the latest research.

Mobile roaming costs expected to fall

    Wednesday, 23 May 2007 10:37

The European Parliament in Strasbourg is expected to approve a deal on mobile phone charges today.

The agreement will cap roaming charges meaning cheaper calls for users travelling in the EU.

If the deal is agreed, mobile phone bills could fall by as much as 75%.

AdvertisementMembers of the European Parliament are expected to approve the reduction in roaming charges today.

It is thought that new laws will be rushed into place so that holidaymakers can benefit this summer.

The agreement will also reduce rates even further over the next three years.

  13. Seems to be a lot of confusion over this.

I got this e-mail from the Deputy Commissioner two days ago.

    Dear xxxxxxxxxxx

I am directed by Deputy Commissioner, Strategic and Resource Management to acknowledge receipt of your e-mail dated 18 May 2007.

To obtain Garda clearance, you should write to the Superintendent of your local Garda Station (or local to the last address you lived at in Ireland).

    In your letter you should;

    1) Outline you reason for requesting the clearance

    2) Include your full name, date of birth and every address you have lived at in Ireland

    Regards

    Gráinne Shortall

  14. Nice to see this post which I originally started, re-activated.

I had requested that it would be pinned to the top of the forum where it could be added to, as various activities occured in and around Chiang Rai but it was denied.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing you all at the exhibition.

  15. Hi PeaceBlondie,

Are we to take it that the Police Checks issue is still as clear as mud?

    Regards,

    Hill16

PS Any of you Irish lads in Chiangmai? :o

it's just rumour, and his school doesn't know what it's talking about.
It's most upsetting to expats who teach in Thailand, to be told first one ignorant thing and then another, by expert educators who don't know the first thing about what applies to foreigners.
As an expert educator and teacher recruiter of many years in Thailand, I can assure you that any males applying at a Thai embassy or consulate abroad for a Non-Imm Visa B, based on accompanying documentation for the employment as a teacher in mainstream primary and secondary schools, they will be required to produca a Police Clearance Certificate not older than six months. That is the ruling even if some consulates or their clerks decide not to insist on it.
It's great to have an expert educator; you probably weren't one of the educators I was referring to. As for your assurance, could you please back that up with a direct quotation from a named official at the central office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs? What about an Irish citizen who's lived in Thailand for the last ten years? Which of the two levels of 'police clearance checks' from the United Kingdom meet the requirement? Is this clearance from the citizen's own country, or from the Thai police? How many employees of the MFA and its honorary consulates know a clearance check when they see one? Is there an approval on a case by case basis, or is anybody with a reckless driving offense from 32 years ago automatically denied a visa?

Whilst we're on the subject of police clearances, is this only for visas issued abroad? What about visas extended within Thailand by the Immigration Police? Is a police clearance check required for a longterm teacher and resident in Thailand who merely changes schools? What about work permits issued by offices of the Ministry of Labour? What about teachers' licenses issued by the Ministry of Education?

Thank you for your definite assurance. Such precise statements, however, are rather thin on the ground in these parts.

    1 Irish in Chiang Rai.

    Up Donegal.

Nobody asking in my school( 4 farang).

  16. Hello , I am an Indian and have 15 years of experience in the field of education . Have taught at all levels of school education and BEd college level too! I have done BEd, M Ed, MA ( Economics) and MA English . What is the process of getting a job in Thailand? I had visisted Thailand as a tourist in Feb and found a lot of similarities in culture between Thailand and India.

    Please help Thanks.

I think that is your problem and one that is shared by the many other Asian (ie Phillipines) teachers.

Unfortunitly, especially for the more qualified Asian teachers, most of the schools are looking for native speakers.........some insisting that you are caucasian, regardless of the qualification reason being that the parents are paying a little bit more to be taught by a farang.

Hope you are successful in your search for a job.

Check out www.ajarn.com a good job site for teachers in Thailand

  17. The volunteering business can be very profitable.

Changing Worlds prides itself on being a small organisation that knows each volunteer; assistance is always available in-country and in the UK. Prices start at £1775 and include return flight and transfer to the placement, courses, accommodation, and all UK and overseas support. Volunteers must budget for visas, insurance, pocket money and food in some cases. Fundraising advice is given at interview.

  18. This requirement is so stupid .

In Europe you can get a police certificate fairly handy but all it will say is that the holder doesn't have a conviction.

There will be no fingerprints on it ( against civil liberties ) so whats stopping someone knocking up a photoshop copy of something and handing it in. No way to get it checked .
