  1. Yep now coming thick and fast on Thai media (Boonlert, the PAO)

But still some minor contradictory reports. Most recent seem to say that he is gone via S 44.

Although suspension is mentioned ...an immediate investigation is also mentioned which is to go to the PM.....who signed the s 44 order (copies of which are floating round as well assuming they are legit)

Cannot see him coming back from this.

  2. The related searches of the well known furniture shop (and owner of several hotels) has been well covered in Thai media. Apparently owner is MIA overseas (per some reports). Owner who is named is also described as a friend of a unamed but famous politician whistling.gif

Good news is they caught the delivery driverscheesy.gif

Poor sod...look at the Red bike (what a coincidence colour wise). Can't see him having shekels for any fine himself.

  3. in general chit chat with a friend today we both commented on the reduction in Chinese tourists on the road.

Coincidentally the Bangkok Post has an article today on this and its flow on effect to Chiang Mai tourism, economy, and employment.

I have always had a bit of wonderment at statistics in Thailand. Sometimes entertaining, sometimes questionable, and sometimes a fantasy (thank you TAT).

The Post is suggesting that since the June 27 changes for Chinese vehicles entering Thailand, border crossings through CR (and then mainly onward to CM) are down from 600 per day to 10 per day.

The article suggested that vehicles on average had 3 passengers who were spending 5000 baht each day facepalm.gif

Local CM tourism honcho is looking at 3000 to 5000 job losses in the next 3 months.

Guess not a good time to get your income from, or work for, 7/11 whistling.gif

  4. God doesn't exist, he's a figure of your imagination.

    God You doesn't exist, he's you're a figure of your g-o-d's imagination.

I think this scans a little better.

    ~o37;

Nicely put but please please please, capital G in God. I am having flashbacks to my Jesuit education.

To digress the other unforgivable was "happy xmas". Always corrected by the good Brother Tim as, "What right do you have to substitute the name of our blessed Lord for that of the unknown quantity"?"

  5. I would have thought the stock standard easiest to use and service and buy would be the Honda Clicks.

I test drove both and the Yamaha is a much better bike.

Sent from my Redmi Note 2 using Tapatalk

Matter of opinion.....but in favour of the Honda's is that there are a heap of them about second hand and dealers....far more than Yamaha.

The Yamaha is quite stylish, and I do like it, but its not to everyone's style. It is the styling that leads you to be able to put two "Thai" helmets in.....it is a much bigger compartment than the Honda for sure. A full mask helmet does reduce the space available for a second, and I would not be sure it could fit in sideways like the smaller Thai helmets it promotes,

Because the Yamaha model is fairly new there are not much options for used ones, whereas Clicks are everywhere, again only an issue if budget is a consideration. New price both are fairly close. It takes a while to get used to the automatic cut out on the new Clicks.. Only mention the used as yesterday OP posted about where to find a cheap second hand motorcycle.

In CM, to me, Honda are much more available, new and used, and serviceable in a lot more places

  6. There was a nice quote by Stephen Fry a few years back

“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so f*****ing what."

  7. Seems the Karaoke scams are still going well in Chiang Mai. This is an from a Bangkok Newspaper. For one guy who had been in Thailand for a few years, spoke decent enough Thai, and stayed for four hours, total bill 47000 Baht. Now I really do not have a problem with the bill so much excessive though it may be. If he went in an occupied the time of many ladies for 4 hours, plus drinks, nibbles, etc he was going to be up for some serious baht....but 47000 is impressive. The thing that irritates me on this is there is an abundance of info on these scams in Chiang Mai....simply stay away from them in CM.. Likewise upstairs Patpong....well known.

    https://www.facebook.com/team.news007/videos/1138522909537898/

What does strike me as odd is that it seems to happen only in Chiang Mai, or much more regularly in Chiang Mai, and bills are enormously higher in Chiang Mai....just my experience. I do go to Karaokes in CM but mainly the smaller hole in the wall places and have never had a problem....the larger venues I stay away from like the plague. Larger venues in other cities never had a problem.

Bright side is that there was no violence this time. If there are "good" larger Karaoke clubs surely they suffer by association from the violence and bill disputes. I am aware of some Karaokes that are owned by BIB.

So my questions....is this scam just a CM thing.....does violence only occur at those venues without BIB ownership and therefore access to a sympathetic dispute resolution person, is the BIB resolution phase just a CM revenue earner, and is this because there is in CM a lager amount of establishments owned by BIB?

It just seems to be so much more common here in CM than elsewhere.

  8. Is some of this a function of Thai Economics 101 whereby if you have a reduction in customers you simply increase your prices. I ask this as even with Farang businesses I have noted some sizeable increases with no apparent increase in supply or labor costs. As a small example (that hopefully will not drag out the "it's only ten baht brigade") a local farang bar for me increased the price of your standard "bar" coke from 30 baht to 40 baht. This was not done to move on those who "sit" on drinks be it coke, water, or beer, or increase rent etc, it was freely admitted that it was to maintain income with reduced customers.

Attributing rises to increasing expat numbers with no regards to the actual finances of those expats makes no sense, especially given the recent CEC doggy bag episode, and now the bar episode with the other group (rubbing stamps of business cards to get another free drink). I have lost count of the amount of threads that mention the word "cheap" for food, transport, border runs.....perhaps the increase in digital nomads is a factor here. Quantity may be up, but quality in an economic sense may not.

I think generally rich or poor people are not spending their money, a bit of a world wide issue now. Then you have the specifics of Thailand, going into ASEAN as less than competitive, issues with fishing industry for EU and others, factories reducing production and laying off staff, exports reducing, political uncertainty of referendum, ageing monarch, junta government, increasing household debt and defaults, property glut and length of time to sell, questionable education standards, Bangkok verses North, the list goes on and on.

Appreciating that generalizations are a bad thing but to me many Thai are not good financial planners, and when it comes to work attend rather than perform. They are simply not competitive with neighbouring nations on productivity or labour costs and multi nationals are taking note when setting up businesses. On top of that Thailand is not the bastion of democracy any more and other countries have much more stable regime/governments with which to do business.

To me for Thai or Farang the uncertainty or risk volatility (economics wise) is way up the scale here now. Causing people to spend less, curb lifestyle, and try and have a bigger (or any) safety net. Those that have dollars are perhaps not spending or spending as much adopting a "wait and see" approach. Perhaps this has a flow on effect to Thai attitudes and general happiness. Even the junta noticed this when they started off with the "bringing happiness back to the people" campaign.

At least it's not hot any morebiggrin.png

  9. i see pattaya has a expat club there books and finance open to all to see
if you have a expats club you hold a annual general meeting
the books open and profits divided to members
if you have a expat community
you have a annual general meeting books open to finance
after expenses remaining money going to the community
if you have a private company the money goes into there own pockets
what one do you run nancy l[/quota

God knows I am not the biggest fan of the CEC but my gripe is mainly with the constant criticism of Immigration and Agents etc.

But to suggest some financial impropriety is going way over the line. The AGM and Constitutional changes, and active membership, with fully disclosed financial records are beyond doubt.

Whilst I have concerns with some actions by the CEC executive and think some misguided I have absolutely no doubts on the integrity of the executive.

The CEC is a Lot more professionally run and accountable than what it was years ago. Give credit where it is due.

If you have evidence of any pocketing put it up or take to BIB......

A little investigation by yourself will find the answer to your post easy enough, it's publicly available, and the changes made well needed and fully implemented.
  10. A rewriting of history worthy of the Stalinists.

Link suggests that Nancy was on the board for three years prior to becoming El Presidento.

This was while the LM and PFM investments and such like we're being promoted very actively by the club. Was also per link singing the praises of Alan, and his unfortunate ( cough cough) illness that necessitated his urgent medivac to the warmer climes of The English North,

The "club" has changed via constitution from what was essentially private ownership.

    http://www.chiangmaicitylife.com/news/changes-at-chiang-mai-expats-club/

It really ought to consider renaming or rebranding perhaps as a retiree club rather than expat. Looking at the very nice photos of the breakfasts it really does look like an older demographic. Perhaps the employed, self employed, digital nomads, married with family, Thai speaking, more socially able, etc do not need the support mechanism or friendships the club may offer. As is much effort immigration wise is focussed on retirees. The linking of Lannacre, health insurance, end of life arrangements, social security discussions etc is more consistent with retirees Even the name Expat unfortunately is an elitist throw back to largely male Caucasian based clubs and may put some other off. An expat was usually an expat worker getting expat pay and living conditions, but no need to digress on that.

Perhaps time to draw a line and the club focussing rather than attempting and promoting itself as a catch all.

  11. Well put Winnie. I too was more than a little disapointed in respect of the local hole in the wall dump comment.

It does not reflect well on the club at all.

Having been to all venues I would suggest that after that comment the hole in the wall dumps clearly offer a much classier and honest company than the CEC buffet kleptomaniacs and ill mannered CEC TV postings like that referenced.

How can one espouse to be a welcoming and informative club with such behaviours beggars belief.

The River Market is very nice...it deserves so much better than to be associated with the behaviours displayed by some at the breakfasts.

Dave, please keep an eye on the cutlery and condiments......

  12. Might be worth posting in a more appropriate forum than just Chiang Mai.

Not trying to be a smart arse just I recall a similar post (to me) by Caps very recent.

    Posted 2016-06-15 11:33:57

I am with the HSBC and they are good doing transfers, never really had a bad one. But after I have paid the £4 internet fee I get charged another £16 ish. When I rang them up they said that the money goes via HSBC Thailand (which I found out is only Commercial) as they don't have a direct link to SCB in BKK. So I end up paying because HSBC in the UK has to use an intermediary Bank (even though its the same Banking group), has anyone else found this?

  13. That full list of ideal requirements is going to be a real struggle I imagine.

McDonalds at Thapae covers most :)

I always thought Gymkhanna had a lot of potential to do/be a lot more but seems to float along in its own contentment. Would that we could all be like that.

I see Khualek has been mentioned in the thread, could do a lot worse than that, a view from the other side, and not so traumatic a change.

  14. Too many years ago I was working with a Psychiatrist who had a level of disdain for Psychology.

He opined that Psychology 101 could be summarized in three sentences and thereby save a semester of study.

    1.) Folks do strange things.

    2.) We don't know why.

3.) The test is on Friday.

In the end what I take away from this tragedy, is not the service at the consulate, or the Islam verses hate crime, but I will recall the immediate queuing of hundreds of people around the hospital, waiting for hours, to donate blood, No matter how bad an individuals acts may be, humanity always rises above it. In time I will forget his face and name, ..i will remember the queue.

  15. Nancy, nice of you to clear up your inconsistent approach to Thai defamation laws.........oh wait.

I certainly have no problem with Thai immigration, have not paid 15000 baht, am not sponsored by competing agents.

What I am suggest is that the experiences of you and some members are not reflective of all expats. The same " difficulties" are experienced by some in banking, health, access, Internet access, food choices, where to live, transport, and on and on. While their experiences are real that in no way diminishes the good or effortless experiences of others.

If you want to help them, to gain more members and plaudits then so be it. But do not expect a free pass when you universally dismiss good experiences to validate your position. The constant fear mongering and hysteria serves no purpose other than promoting yourself and your post count. It is simply not productive in a practical sense even if there are some that have problems.

Some of your posts and criticisms of immigration are almost creating further demand for the agent that you criticise.

Edit. My apologies to OP for sidetracking. I have used embassy letter from outreach service that was just over four months old for my extension.

  16. Chiang Mai Immigration is a law unto itself and I'd suggest that anyone who is planning to use an Income Letter more than one month old in Chiang Mai download, print out and bring the Immigration Directive with them to CM Imm. that UbonJoe so thoughtfully provided in Post No. 13.

What is acceptable in Jomtien, Phuket, CW or other places has no bearing on what happens at CM Imm. Recently, CM Imm has really stepped up their program of pushing all applicants to use agents and they're looking for any excuse to disqualify someone who is trying to to handle their own business related to retirement. Perhaps it would help to have UbonJoe's "directive" with you if you have an "elderly" Income Letter.

another scaremongering post by some one with god knows what agenda or crusade they think there promoting, just sounds like a bitter person to me.ive done 10 ext of stays with income letter, sailed through easily every one,in fact seems less problematic than the cash route.

    It's a funny old world.

A poster can make defamatory unproven allegations against immigration and put it forward as a public service yet on another post the mere mention of the factually questionable history of a certain club brings the same poster out quickly with public service warnings on the strict Thai defamation laws.

I guess there are no mirrors at that club.

It appears that the club members perhaps lack the understanding or abilities that the significantly wider expat community has when dealing with immigration.

We also have a chicken and egg scenario. Which came first the problems with immigration for club members or the vested interest saviour within the club that promotes these problems.?

The more things change the more they stay the same it seems.

  17. knew that u would be first , please read my opening post again, and get a good grip of yourself,(if poss)

your above post and answers are not in any way, shape or form related to my questions

    you are full of windsmile.png

Wow Weeeee you have 3 properties you are trying to sell and have dropped the selling prices by 15 to 20%. This reeks of a sales job to me and you make it so obvious.

Are these your properties or do you sell on commission? 3% I think is the going rate. A property valued a 5 million baht that`s 150000 baht in your pocket. Nice one.

Got to wonder after his blind promotion of the Green Valley condo he had money in.

Yes that was funny. I wonder if that is one of the properties he is trying to dump?

    <deleted> read post 11

for clarification purposes, they are not E/S propertys at all , just three that i know ,which have been on the market, etc etc

do not even know the owners etc etc

    many thks

So......They are not his properties. He does not know the owners. He is unlikely to get 3 percent given does not know owners, not in real estate game, and has not sold yet. It is a casual observation. One no doubt that many of us have noted, I posted yonks ago about a property near me that went for a third of its original asking price. There was a post bya TV member earlier explaining difficulties of selling a new property in Doi Saket.

If people are interested in these properties they can pm and ask for location or GPS and look the,selves...no ES no owner.
