  1. I've always found that the best bars are away from the tourist areas especially midweek when they are more peaceful. Some good ones over the river, mainly staffed by vietnamese girls , very friendly and not too hard nosed

  2. My old candy bar has finally expired ( RIP ) and I was thinking of getting a Nokia 520 as it seems like good value. However, the battery life seems poor. Has anyone got one of these phones and are they happy with it ?

    Thanks in advance

  3. At last. an informative thread where everyone is in complete agreement ...................um ....not to agree on anthing .

My ten cents worth. I was always told that is the car that is insured not the driver. However, there is sometimes a difference between third party policies and fully comprehensive policies. Some fully comp policy holders opt to save a bit by only insuring a named driver. If anyone else drives and has an accident in the car they are not covered.

I hypotheticaly asked my insurer what would happen if my neighbors 8 year old son found my car keys, went for a drive and had a non fatal accident. He told me I would be covered despite the kid not having a license. But this was an old car that only qualified for third party cover.

As for an international driving permit., providing you leave the country every 90 days and re enter is should be revalidated and you can use it for a year. I went to my insurance companies head office in Silom and asked for this to be confirmed to my face by someone in authority. They did so. Do I trust them ....no. Like most insurance companies they will go to great lengths to try to get out of paying....whatever they say. In Thailand you can often find two people with identical cases but different experiences both willing to call the other one an ill informed idiot. TIT.

  4. All the beaches along this coast are fairly similar looking. Not to many coconut trees mostly pine lining the beach. All empty midweek and busy weekends. Busiest is probably Hat Mai Pim but even that is pretty quiet. For some reason this coast is not noted for its fine eating, a reputation I can agree with. Never had a truly decent meal anywhere ( compared to Bangkok ) along this coast. Seafood is the worst you can get anywhere and not especially cheap....pretty odd considering all the fishing done.

  5. Not true at all.

You can still easily get an extension of stay from immigration if you can meet the financial requirements.

    The magic words.

Presumably, if you can meet all the requirements, financial and otherwise, you should have no reason to fear when applying for a multiple entry visa from the London embassy.

As for Penang, there is another thread on here somewhere where a member tried to get a multi based on marriage from Penang and was asked for proof of finances .

  6. Appart from a Sporty Intake Roar, do they make a difference.?.thumbsup.gif

I spent a lot of time surfing the net to answer this question. Almost everyone using them ( in the States ) said they noticed an improvement in performance and some noticed better fuel economy as well. The reason given was the improved air flow and more efficient combustion produced by the K&N filters.

However................. one researcher pointed out the following. If you hold up a conventional paper filter to the light you'll notice no light coming through. If you do the same to a K&N filter apparently you will see lots of minute holes in a grid pattern across the filter. These holes, as well as improving airflow will also allow more minute particles of detritus like dirt and dust to pass through into the combustion chamber. In America where the roads for the most part are not as dusty as here this should not be a problem . However, prolonged use in a country like Thailand might increase engine wear.

This is NOT my opinion, just passing on what I read on the net so if you feel like tearing this opinion to pieces.....feel free to do so but leave me out of it coffee1.gif

  7. ^ Jack Golf no longer in business due to decline in demand. It was taken over by his former employees but I believe they only use minibuses departing at 5.00 a.m. now

Probably the best now is ' Thai Visa Run '

    http://www.thaivisarun.com/

I used them a couple of times and were o.k. although the owner is a bit miserable and blunt. I think they still use a big coach but best to phone and book first. Don't try a DIY job to Aranyaprathet ............... too busy. If you want to do it yourself best option is to head for Mae Sot and stay overnight there before heading back. Makes a pleasant trip.

  8. Thanks for the detailed information. Hidden treasures like this are always good to know.

I'm afraid if there are threads on Thai Visa about it it is no longer a hidden treasure. Without wishing to be negative, it was an excess of success that finaly led to the clampdown at the Hull consulate. When a place becomes too popular on account of its leniency, it is usually only a matter of time before it is brought into line with the policies at other consulates. Nothing good lasts for ever and in these matters , notoriety heralds an eventual demise to a very useful alternative. Enjoy it while it lasts.

  9. Sounds like you really didn't enjoy it wink.png

I loved teaching the masses and will be back at it in a few years

Good luck and hope you have fun anyhoo!

Hmm.....these days the only way I can conceive of the word ' teaching ' and ' fun ' appearing in the same sentence is :

    " It's fun when you quit teaching " wink.png

I guess when the students were a nice bunch it wasn't so bad but what I really don't like about it is that you have to stay focused for long periods. I think I'd rather be pushing a broom somewhere....less invasive of the mind.

  10. Immigration Detention centre if he works without a permit.

Yes, but he will be joining thousands of other people who do the same thing--including a person I know who teaches the child of an immigration officer!

But that said, it is true that it is technically against the law.

I would suggest that you go to work for one of the language schools that are located around the city. Even if the idea isn't exactly what you want, you may be able to use it as a springboard to private work that is suitable to your needs and schedule.

Thanks for that Scott. Yes, that's what I figured but I thought I'd fish for any alternatives to see if the scene had changed. Oh well, guess not so unless my online shop picks up , I'll be facing the grim whiteboard again.sad.png

Hard times , killing floor revisited. Never say never again.

  11. Where do you live?

    Bangkok.

As for the work permit, I have read that they are unlikely to be given for part time work so not much point trying to get one. Yes there are some risks but as has often been mentioned, relatively small. To be honest I don't think I could stand full time teaching again, especially given the low wages. I taught full time for several years at AUA ,The British Council and finaly Khon Kaen university but in the end it spoilt the pleasure of being in Thailand so I returned to the U.K. to get some real money. As we all know, that is not an option any more so I was considering desperate measures.

  12. With the pound in my pocket not going as far as it used to I was considering beefing up my finances with some part time weekend teaching.

I don't have any of the necessary paperwork ( work permit, degree, tefl certificate etc ) but do have several years of teaching experience, albeit from about 20 years ago when I last taught in Bangkok.

I don't want to teach classes, just one on one conversational students , and I'm only thinking of about 5 hour a day for Saturday and Sunday ( making a maximum of about 40 hours a month.)

So....... where would be the best place to look for that amount of work and what sort of hourly wage could I reasonably expect.

    Thanks in advance ......................... T

  13. Going back to the OP, I am in the exact same situation, ie, 55 years old, here on a multiple entry non immigrant visa.

My partner and I have been together for 9 years and are thinking of getting married. However, like the OP I am unofficialy retired and living on my savings so I have no job ( don't need one ) or proof of income although I do make a little from work on the internet.

So,back to the question about income. I was just going to put retired down. Has anybody actually done this or is it all just paperwork that the British Embassy are'nt too fussy about ? I have read the other answers and from what people are saying it shouldn't be a problem.
