Ok.... I stand corrected about BOI.

Errrr, what?? What are you talking about, you are making no sense at all. The BOI is an "investment visa" and "nothing to do with real companies operating in Thailand"?? Do you even know what the BOI is and what it does? It is not a visa. Seriously, why keep going?
"I stand corrected but then I'm going to say something immediately afterwards which means I clearly don't."
QuoteEvery single company needs 4 Thai staff to 1 foreigner.
No exceptions,
....and there you go again, repeating the same falsehood after I just gave you the most clear information and examples, and after you said you stand corrected. Wow, just wow.

My current wife deals with many Japanese companies and they struggle every time Thai staff leaves because they immediately have to look for a replacement.
So thanks for confirming that that you don't work for BOI company and probably don't work at all and just making up stories.
OR
Your company is doing something illegal.... oops
Another one who has no idea what they are talking about.
I run a BOI company and have done since it was established (I did the BOI application myself so I know them and their rules very well). We have never needed four Thais to each foreigner, nor do we need 1m THB capital investment for each foreigner (as non BOI companies do). For the first year we had more foreigners than Thais, now we are about 40-60 foreigner-Thai, way short of a 4 to 1 ratio. And we are a 100% foreign owned business. We are also allowed to buy land although we haven't and won't.
You have to rightly justify each position and we have never had a refusal or a question and all our foreigners have had multiple visa and work permit renewals. And yes, they encourage you over time to train Thais which we also do, but that 4-1 ratio DOES NOT EXIST for BOI companies. Please don't post false information.- 4

Well you'd be wrong, again. I was the one who did the BOI application, I set up the company, I know exactly who the shareholders are and that we are in no way a partnership with any Thai company.
QuoteI say again, it is not legally possible for a wholly owned foreign based company to operate in Thailand without following the BOI restrictions, requirements and criteria.
Hmmm, now you state you have to follow BOI rules, well done for sneaking that in to weaken your stance. Yes, we do have BOI rules to follow but actually they are not restrictive - the BOI exist to encourage foreign investment. See, before you said this, so well done on softening your ludicrous stand:
QuoteThere are not 'loads of international wholly owned companies' in Thailand because the Law doesnt allow whole foreign ownership operation. They are all partnerships in one form or another.
....which is 100% untrue.

Completely and utterly wrong. I also work for a 100% fully foreign owned business here and it wasn't difficult to make happen.
QuoteEven giants like international Law firms and accountancy firms have to abide by employment quotas and restrictive practices, which is why many don't stay, Tesco being one, Carrefour's another. Guess why Toyota assemble cars here, under partnership?
Tesco sold up as part of a global restructuring, nothing to do with employment quotas at all. How would employment quotas even affect a company as huge as that? You can imagine the board meeting: "We need to hire one more foreign executive in Thailand". "But how would we do that? We'd need to have at least four Thais working for us?".

Yet today, i have been asked "what job do you do", "owners wants to know what business you have in the UK", "owner wants to know income", "owner wants to know address in the UK", "owner wants to see this and that" etc
I am almost laughed in disbelief. Despite the fact they don't even verify anything and i could say anything, i just find it all rather disgusting and a complete invasion of privacy..
I know the answer - walk away. But i just find it all rather frustrating, after agreeing price and preparing ourselves mentally to take the property on (which has been empty for a long time).
My brother in UK is currently trying to rent a place for his daughter. Must prove income and it has to be a minimum of three times the price of the rent, proven with pay slips, letter from employer, bank statements. Also it is not possible to take it without a viewing as the owner needs to vet each potential renter, interview them, and then select the chosen one.
It's pretty normal. An owner wants to know you are professional and responsible, you'll not fall behind with payments, you'll not do any dodgy in the property. If you find that pretty disgusting then you are going to struggle in the real world, sorry. Just answer the questions and rent the property if you want it.
And would you trust your property to anyone of the street without knowing they can afford it and will take care of it?- 3

This is what I get when I try to upgrade a Star Alliance flight with Royal Orchid miles. When I wrote to them about it they replied with all sorts of arguments about classes and unavailability.
It's almost impossible. I have bought the most expensive flex tickets but no upgrades online. When I call them to ask they say my class of ticket is not eligible. I have tried so many flights that I have pretty much given up. I understand not letting super saver tickets upgrade, but the most expensive flex tickets? Still can't.
Maybe as someone else suggested I should next time book another Star Alliance airline if they fly to the same destination and try that, but not many choices unless I am flying to Singapore, and then who cares about upgrading a two hour flight.
I have hundreds of thousands of miles but can't use them. Tried flying to Japan - nope, not available on any date. UK, nope not on any date.
I am not a Thai Airways basher, I generally like flying with them (regionally), but their Royal Orchid points program is really really poor.- 1

My candidates for first electric car is ex30 and seal (AWD versions) because I am excited about the power and amazing acceleration they have. The handling performance probably will not reach the power performance though .
I'm with you there, ex30 is my first choice but Seal AWD is really interesting too - very similar performance figures, but I think the Volvo looks cooler. The MG4 seems a little slow but everyone says it is a lot of fun to drive so will give it a go as nothing to lose and I have an open mind. I do want speed and some luxury touches though so think the xe30 ticks most boxes.
Spent a few days with an electric XC40, also a C40 and the performance is addictive. The xe30 takes it up a couple of notches - I know someone who has driven one and they say it is phenomenal. Switching to a 170bhp mg4 that is slower than my petrol XC40 doesn't sound appealing but JBChiangRai's review has made me at least consider trying it as it does sound like it's fun to drive and outright acceleration isn't everything (although for me it is a large percentage).
I have no interest in Teslas.- 1

Or was it just another small-member'd idiot speeding, texting and driving, not paying attention, not wearing a seatbelt, and not caring? That's not a "heart wrenching tragedy" that's cause-and-effect. Somehow, given the driving behavior here, I doubt this was an unavoidable tragedy. It's on a well lit-straight road. A semi truck is so huge, it's hard to miss.
They don't care about their own traffic deaths / safety standards, so why should we? You call it tragic, I call it business as usual in the land of no-driver-safety-learning-required
It is still tragic. No-one deserves to burn to death in a car, must be an unimaginably horrific way to go.
Stupidity or not it is still tragic and heart wrenching - it was someone’s young son.

Flying to Manchester from Bangkok this Wednesday with Qatar as usual. A380 to Doha at the front of the aircraft, I am in economy but with legroom seat and then in business class to Manchester from Doha.
Looking forward to it.
I gave up with Thai a long time ago, I was a fan of EVA at one time but since I now prefer Qatar, followed by Etihad and Emirates.
You can't beat the Middle Eastern airlines at the moment, although all flights to the UK from Bangkok at the moment tend to be eye watering with the prices, except for Lufthansa and Austrian airlines who I have never flown with.
Agree, have just come back from the UK on Emirates. Would never consider Thai for long haul as they are so far behind the middle eastern carriers. Poor IFE is a major factor.
I like them as a regional carrier though. If I’m flying to Singapore, Manila, Malaysia, Jakarta or anywhere less than a four hour flight I will choose Thai. Usually new planes (A350, 787), decent service, decent food - better than most regional competitors. But long haul? No way. Not even a consideration.

Interesting - ditching Boeing 737s in favour of AirBus 320s?
Nope, not ditching anything. Neither TG or Thai Smile fly 737s. They only have A320/321 in their narrow body fleet.
If I’m flying short haul on any airline their aircraft type is a deal breaker. Airbus A320/1 or I find another airline.

This is an honest account of my experience with EV’s.
My first experience was with a Mercedes E350e back in 2018.
I loved the silent e-drive but grossly underpowered and often ran out of electrons, real world e-range was 19km.
I ordered a Porsche Taycan in 2020 and got one June 2021. A fantastic car and my first impressions were why would anyone want so much power? Within a few weeks I was using all that power and loved the car. It had to be trailered under warranty back to the authorised dealer in Bangkok twice for air conditioning failures.
When MG offered the incentive on the MG EP+ I ordered one for my eldest daughter, I knew I would save a lot of money with her going to another province for University.
It came when she was at Uni and I used it for a week and was so impressed I ordered one for myself. I normally do about 5,000km per year which is important for depreciation on a Porsche and I was now doing nearly treble that visiting my daughters at Uni every fortnight.
Ordering an MG EP+ was simply to keep the miles off the Porsche.
I was invited to the launch of the MG4 and still couldn’t get a delivery date on my EP+ but could get an MG4 instantly. I took the MG4 but struggled with whether it was really worth almost 25% more than the EP+. Similar performance, smaller car but rear wheel drive.
I started using the MG4 for the drive to Chiang Mai to see my daughters and began to love the car and especially its suspension and handling. It’s not without its faults, sometimes pulling away from the line it loses traction and the electronics kick in before full power again and this can be repeated 3 times up to 40-50 km/hr. The car is overpowered for the tyres and that is in the dry! I began to love the MG4 driving it spiritedly. The closest I can compare it to is a VW Golf GTI. If you’ve driven a hot hatch you will know how much fun they are - for the driver anyway.
I found I was mostly choosing my MG4 over the Porsche and instead of being my alternate ride once a fortnight, it had become my daily ride.
Don’t misunderstand me, the Porsche is a far superior car, but it’s 10x the price and maybe only 2x the fun.
I had ordered an MG Cyberster for Q3/Q4 2024 and decided to sell my Porsche at it’s 2nd birthday June 2023. I like the MG4 enough to daily drive it until then and a Porsche out of warranty is like playing Russian Roulette with your bank account. Porsche’s have 12-18 month delivery times and are one of the slowest depreciating cars you can buy if you keep the miles off. I lost 10% in 2 years.
Driving the MG4 still puts a smile on my face every time I get in it. They got so much right with the car.
EV’s are getting Hypercar fast and the struggle I think will be to get the handling and braking right. I did read MG used an F1 guy to get the handling right on the Cyberster, I am hopeful.
Yeah, but but but fake British heritage etc.
Really interesting post, thank you. I have been waiting for the XE30 before making my choice to go electric but am now definitely going to try an MG4. I might book a test drive for next week and will report back.
Can't wait to hear how the Cyberster is whenever you receive it. I am guessing you've put a deposit down without knowing the final price? Have they given any indication?- 1

No racist stuff from me, that's your mistake, just my thoughts on the use of the MG name and Union Jack on the boot to sell a 100% Chinese creation.....????
Righty ho. So in previous threads where you bang on about MG "stealing heritage" and I pointed out my Volvo has a Swedish flag stitched in to the seat and they play on Swedish minimalist design language, you didn't seem to have the same hatred. Oh, but Volvos are designed in Sweden maybe? Where are MGs designed?
Then I pointed out Minis have union jacks on their taillights, you can specify them on the wing mirrors or roof, they play up on the British heritage massively even though they are German. But no, that's not an issue for you.
Rolls Royce are quintessentially British in all their heritage and positioning. But they are German too. As are Bentley.
As it seems you only have a problem with the Chinese brand playing on the Western heritage of their marque but don't mind when European brands do it it leads me to draw my own conclusions, sorry if you don't like that. You really are the worst broken record on this entire forum and I have no idea what motivates you (well I do, but I don't need to say it again).- 1

120kph on a one metre track? No thanks.
Why?
120kph is nothing special on metre gauge. Even in Thailand the red line does 160kmh on metre gauge, Elsewhere around the world 130, 140, 160 is common.
I am no fan of metre gauge and think any new line should be standard gauge - I have no idea why the red lines are metre gauge as they are electric and were built from scratch - but these are upgrades to existing lines so metre gauge it has to be to maintain compatibility. If built properly with good signaling then 120kmh shouldn't be a problem. -

I can understand the A380 being better than the 777 in economy but does the same apply in Business as 777 are shown here with 12 inches more leg room and 2 inches more seat width
https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Emirates_Airlines/fleetinfo.php
Emirates A380 business is 1-2-1 with tons of privacy (especially in A or K seats). Emirates 777 is generally 2-3-2 which is very poor for business class as you don't have direct aisle access. Their newest 777s are 1-2-1 in business too but these are pretty rare and don't fly from here.
Just flew back from the UK today on Emirates - unfortunately in economy as with the whole family - and we had a 777 from Stanstead (it was significantly cheaper than Gatwick or Heathrow) and A380 from Dubai. In economy there isn't much difference although the A380 is a better / smoother / quieter plane. But in business there is a huge difference. Also nobody has mentioned the bar on the A380 which is a brilliant place to spend time. If I am flying business it is A380 or nothing.
Amazingly there were maybe 60 people on the flight so it was a huge empty A380 and we could all pick a row to sleep on.
After Covid when Emirates were asking 170-180k for business return to the UK I went instead with Oman on their 787-800 and 787-900. A better seat and cabin then Emirates, better food (I don't particularly rate Emirates' business class food) but the service not as good as Emirates, but worth considering as it was good value and had a similar layover time but they only fly to Heathrow I think.
