1. This guy will end up in jail pretty quick.

But what about the drunk, Ferrari driving, energy drink heir, is he in jail yet ?

No, just caught it on this morning's news, a 500 baht fine and the cop says he forgives him.

    Hardly worth all the trouble

Ha ha! 500 baht is about the same as not wearing your helmet.

I can't believe how the police officer backed away and went for his hat. An officer in the states would have taken his teeth out. Seems like they have little training in how to defend themselves.

He would be dead if he had a good suntan.

  2. We built a nice house in my wife's village in Ubon. We lived there for 2 years then moved to Bangkok and now the UK so the house is sat empty. At the time it seemed like a good idea cuz we were pregnant so it would always be there for them in the future but at the moment the place is virtually abandoned and is just a hassle for her dad to look after and maintain for nothing. We also pay a cleaner to go round once a week cuz being out in the countryside it's dusty and gets full of insects quickly.

Overall it was a massive waste of money. My kids will never live in Isaan. Maybe in 30 years I will retire to there but by then the place will probably be ruined with age. Also, we can never sell it because Thais don't buy 2nd hand houses and we'll probably never find any expat who wants to live out there.

Like someone else said, young Thais primarily want houses, cars and gold just for face. My wife's sister lives in Bangkok and cannot drive but her and her husband are trying to get a bank loan so she can buy a new car to leave in Isaan just to show everyone how well they are doing. Bonkers.

Save your money to look after your real family, or give it all away forever to your new wife. You buy her a new house you will give her the means to leave you and live by herself in her house, this will get brought up and threatened at every argument you have.

So the women he marries is not his "real"family. If you go into it with that attitude you deserve to be done over.Just because you were a fool doesn't mean the rest of us are.

  3. I'm beginning to think you are schizophrenic. Sometimes your posts are very sensible, other times it's <deleted>?facepalm.gif

I don't think I've ever posted throwing money away is a good idea.

Which is effectively what building in a rural Thai village is doing.

Even the villagers wouldn't live there if they had a choice.

Any building there is valueless because,

No work, no money, no school, no medical, no roads, no buyers, no hope.

Now if you had posted, 'I gave her 600,000bht to build on her family land in Chiang Mai'

That would be a completely different matter, as it would benefit her and her children.

That property would have resale value, decent schools for her kids, good hospitals, good infrastructure & employment opportunities.

But Issan people don't want to live in noisy, polluted, crowded CM. or Bangkok or Pattaya. They are happy to live with their friends and family.

  4. My advice in one word, ... Don't!

I did this several years ago. the house was supposed to take 6 months to build and cost 1.5 to 2 million Baht, ..... it took more than two years, did not quite get finished before I ran out of money, .... it cost me over 7 million baht. the land was in her mother's name and we were going to transfer the title to my wife, ...... the land was not properly registered with the Department of Land, so no transfer could be made or lease given until it was properly registered. They said we had to get permission from the three people that owned adjoining land, ... one lived outside Thailand and was impossible to contact, ... it also needed to be surveyed, ..... when they discovered a farang was involved the cost to survey shot up to 100,000 baht.

Take my advice, .... buy a condo in your name, ..... get a Thai will made and make your wife the beneficiary. You can live in it yourself or use it for rentl income and when you die ... she can sell it and go through the headaches of building in her village herself.

What can i say, sorry i wasn't on the end of the line to get my piece of pie.2mill to 7mill.You gotta pool.

  5. I've had the same question posed to me. Looked at many house plans and decided on one. Then the little issues started to creep in. First we had to build up the dirt, initial estimate was 20K, a month later 30K, now 50K+. In the middle of the increasing dirt cost was the 'need' to purchase a welding machine for the builder (didn't get a price), then we had to purchase something else, and then something else for the builder. Then she wanted to take me to the bank and get a loan for appx 3 million. Have yet to move on anything. Like previously said, you will pay for the house and you will pay for all the extras that the Thai in-laws, neighbors, friends, etc... want to kick in. Good luck. What I would do is have a will splitting up your life's savings between your kids and your wife. What she does with that then is up to her; however, I would highly doubt she would use the money to build a house!

Some of you blokes need to take control.Get a new builder, couldn't built much without tools.Did you look at his previous work.

  6. If i was you i would do some resurrect on this site Some scary story's about. Take care of your Four children , if you cannot afford to look after them and build a house , don't do it, look after your four children . also you would never own the land or house ,

Are the kids useless, why can't they look after themselves.Who is going to wipe the ops arse when he is past it,wont be the kids.

  7. The topic of this post is the failure of tourists to get travel insurance when visiting Thailand costing the Thai Gov. Hospitals to provide care for them. We have all heard of foreigners over here who have been assaulted at bars and their family now asking GoFunf me ect for $$$ to get their loe one back home or cover the expenses of reconstruction of mouth (sound familiar) or facial damage. Had another guy come over for wedding came down with dengue and needed hospitlization and funds to get home. We hear the stories all the time so stupid when they could get the insurance when they booked the flites but cheap charlies try to save a buck, not a good idea. We are not taliking about expats living here and over 65 thats another deal.

I am in favor of a proposed law that would make anyone who arrives for VISIT to Thailand to prove they are covered by travel insurance and if cannot prove upon arrival pay say 1,000 to 2,000 baht which will go to Gov Hospitals to cover their expenses treating farangs without insurance.

I always took out travel insurance when traveling those that don't are stupid and that.s what the post was saying so many travelers to Thailand without travel insurance which is good for 3---9 months. If living here thats a whole other story.

"We are not taliking about expats living here and over 65 thats another deal".

You need to read the OP again because you've missed the focus, the subject of the lead article is:

"Reports keep resurfacing of foreigners, expats and tourists alike, requiring hospital treatment despite the visitor having inadequate or no travel insurance at all".

So if you're an expat. (LIVING here) why would you buy (or be able to buy)TRAVEL insurance? The section that you quote is poorly written.

You can buy travel insurance to travel around Thailand, and when you go os,as well.

  8. Can we have a card to put in our passports saying that in the event of accident we want government ambulance and government hospital -- before one of the privateers gets hold of us... ?) wink.png

Why not man up and get some insurance ?

Let's not start that very old thread again. Insurance is not available for many older folks staying long-term.

Insurance is at the heart of the issue here.

To me a foreigner who has problems getting insurance here is not automatically entitled to free medicalit'suc

Luckily it's not up to you,but the Thai govt.I'm fine either way.

  9. instead of trawling through facebook and pursuing people who click 'like' the police should be concentrating their IT resources fighting crimes such as the one highlighted here, and not relying on foreigners to do the work for them.

I agree with you entirely, but I don't think the police here are so interested in this type of crime.

Take a walk along Sukhumvit and there is still child porn readily available.

Not along ago I was at the Marriot Hotel. When I came out some guy approached me and asked if I wanted a lady. After a polite no, he asked if I wanted a man. Again I said "No thanks" to which he replied "A young boy or young girl?"

The police could easily get these guys, but they are not interested.

And this is proof is it,that kiddie porn is on Suk.Next time,go and have a look and take photos,if you get around the 1st corner.

  10. I am missing her,but...

    Increase the beer intake...

    Decrease the personal hygiene...

Make a mess out of the house...

Walk half of the day in underpants...

And let the dogs into the house and even bed...

But two days before she returns everything is back to normal( or even better)thanks Mrs cleaney....

Did you have to call on Mrs Palmer.

  11. Fair play to you all.

I was in the bar industry for 40 years, including 10 years here with a bar.

Did I drink too much ? Yes, in fact I nearly lost everything through it, but to keep going I had to mix with people, which most often meant drinking with them.

I got out a year ago, and decided a change of lifestyle was needed.

Now I usually go out twice a week, and I enjoy it more, something to look forward to.

My only problem, as most drinkers will agree, is that as we get older, the worse the hangover the next day !

That's why i like ice in my beer now.

  12. Just because a Thai bank carries a western bank name does not make it a western bank because to open a bank in Thailand (under whatever name desired) the bank must follow Thai banking laws and Bank of Thailand regulations...be licensed by BOT---therefore you are a Thai bank for all intended purposes that just happens to have a western corporate bank parent. Being American (like me) should have no impact on your ability to open a Thai bank account other than you filling out a super short citizenship questionnaire and a social security number form....that's the only thing extra I've had to do over the last year in opening two more bank accounts here in Bangkok...one with Bangkok Bank (at their HQ main branch on Silom Rd) and one with Krungsri Bank (the one in the Chaeng Wattana/Bangkok immigration building)....I'm on a retirement extension of stay.

OP: glad you got a bank account open....based on many posts on ThaiVisa it can sometimes being challenging regardless of your nationality and type of visa/extension you may have since it seems to vary so much from branch to branch as to how farang-friendly each branch is regarding new account openings.

    Thanks PIB appreciate that.

You are correct in Samui it is near on impossible to find a farang friendly bank as I have tried more than 20.

Hence the reason to post as others may find this information useful.

Also it was the lady who opened the account for me that explained that they couldn't open accounts for Americans, as to why I have no idea.

    Happy new year

They can open for Americans, but it's more paperwork due to US tax laws.

  13. I've been here over 7 years now on a retirement extension of stay. I have "personally" done so much major and minor work on the outside and inside of my house I must seem like a common laborer constantly working on my house to my neighbors and also real common laborers who do work in my moobaan. No one cares...in fact, they are amazed I can do my own hard work around the house and many generally seem enviousness I know how.

    Just paint it...no one cares.

Well, those real common labourers and local tradesmen may start caring one day. And if they decide to report you you could find yourself in a bad situation. I'm not saying that it will happen, just that it might.

In Thailand everything is fine and perfectly acceptable until someone decides to complain.

Personally I also always do my own plumbing and electrics and decorating and cleaning etc. in my condo (I'm competent, I have the time and I really need the exercise), but I have the advantage that once my front door is shut no one can possibly see what I'm doing or know what I'm doing. I would think twice about doing something similar in a house in a village, with Thai neighbours around.

Not so.When you live in a village, your neighbors are family and friends, ain't gunna happen. The dobber would have big problems.

P.S. Be durn sure you have a sturdy ladder spec'ed for your weight....fiber glass ladders are strong but a little heavy....I've go a 24 ft fiberglass ladder I use around the house like when painting/fixing high areas on my two story house.

Same here mate, constant comment is,you know how to do that. What they think i did in Oz for 40 years i don't know. Now asked too help neighbors on their projects, beer rations only.

  15. I'm in the middle of painting our fence (prep work already done) at the minute up here in Phits.

Would be interesting if I got nicked for it.

I think technically it is against the literal law but as with digital nomads, I think it falls into a grey area.

True but digital nomads are not out in the open, you painting the fence are out in the open for all to see.

I have painted my fence and house.. and had my dad DIY a lot in the house so there could have been problems. But to be honest there never were.

I seem to recall that you can even build your own boat (Phuket immigration said something like that) as long as your not constantly selling them (boats)

    The "boat builders" were arrested!

    http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket-news/Phuket-Immigration-cracks-down-on-yachting-marine-industry/22294

The article said they were arrested.Nothing about being convicted.

  16. Phuket is not the place to bar hop, unless by foot.

If you ride / drive whilst intoxicated - you run the risk of being extorted for a large bribe, or, arrested and put in a cell over night, and then fined.

Or, worse still, you crash and seriously hurt / kill yourself - no travel insurance.

Or hurt / kill a Thai - then you are potentially looking at losing your life savings.

But, worse than all of this, you may have to catch a Phuket tuk-tuk who will charge you 1000 baht to go about 2 kilometers, and if you don't pay, he will break your arm. biggrin.png

Now, can you see why Phuket is struggling to attract western tourists and it's quiet, very quiet? biggrin.png

"If you ride / drive whilst intoxicated - you run the risk of being extorted for a large bribe,"

Extorted? Wherever the money ends ups, I hope you get "extorted" for all your worth for putting others' lives at risk.

There in lay the problem, Suradit69.

The BiB here will take 10,000 baht and let you continue on your way.

A friend of mine was riding drunk a while ago, the BiB asked him for 10k to "fix problem." He was escorted to the nearest ATM, handed over 10k, and rode off.

Makes you wonder the lowly amount a drunk Thai would pay for the same crime and accident waiting to happen.

a Thai wouldn't be stupid enuf to pay 10k.10 <deleted> k,man musta been drunk.
