  1. 30,000 a month is 'live-able' but not great fun - I have met farangs on 15,000 a month but they live very frugally - I think 50/60,000 is a nice lifestyle, 70/80,000 is great and 100+ is magnificent

    good luck

"Better" is a more accurate description I think. Magnificent reaches another level.

    "100+ is magnificent"

  2. A million baht a month should cover it. Everyone needs a couple of maids and a mercedes 300 for the butler. And eating at Dukes every night and afternoon is not cheap. And you do need a couple bottles of expensive imported wine at every meal. Then of course there are the helicopter rides down to the beach areas in the Andaman Sea. And, if you are a young man then there are all the imported girls from Issan that don't come cheap.

    .

A sincere question I believe. No sincere answer possible?

  3. What a clown! Albeit a little unlucky (for getting caught with weed). Smoking in your room though in a guesthouse??? <deleted>?

Isn't that what the beach is for or many places I...err...my friends have done this?

As for overstaying the visa, well he is a stupid f@@k for that, but hey I'm sure he has good memories of a country he will never visit again?

No prob, Indo, Laos, Phill's, Burma et al. will allow him a good life too.

45, still smokin, f@@k man don't we...err..they move on by this time?

    .

    What? To Meth?

"45, still smokin, f@@k man don't we...err..they move on by this time?"

It's expensive there for the opportunity to lose money in a casino, but then again I read recently that one out of every six Singaporeans is a millionaire in USD terms.

"The daily entry levy is $100, and is valid for 24 consecutive hours starting from the time of first entry into the casino. The daily entry levy will expire if entry has not taken place by the end of the 30th day after the date of purchase. During the permitted 24 hours you may enter and exit the casino freely. If you purchased the annual, $2,000 levy, the annual entry levy is valid for 12 months starting from either (a) the time of first entry into the casino, or (cool.png 90 days after the date of payment, whichever is earlier."

  5. What is 'living illegally' ? Was he a squatter ?

From my point of view he did not anything wrong, just a guy who does not live conform some manmade rules.

It seems he lived in a house that was not occupied by someone else.

He stayed on a piece on earth that should be free to use for all of us.

He loved herbes that were made by God, with the reason to use them to free our minds.

    This is not a criminal.

    .

He failed to pay fees that many agencies here want. Don't pay the fee and they put you in jail.

It's possible God may be one of the cell mates however. That might work out well for some.

  6.

Ive been looking around to try to find the cause of a few ailments I have had for quite some time and it sounds like I might have intestinal parasites- or so I have read.

My symptoms are consistent to what the all seeing-all knowing eye of the internet would suggest as Hookworm, pinworm, or roundworms.

Is it possible to just treat any/all of these without seeing a doc? I have been to the gastro specialist a few times before, and all I keep getting are the suggestions that food in Thailand is too spicy for foreigners (despite rarely eating spicy food), and to increase my vitamins to combat chronic low iron. Doesnt really improve my confidence.

    Thanks for the help!

Yes, you can treat for all of these with single dose 400mg albendazole, found in all pharmacies, Boots, Watsons etc.

Probiotics may also help, e.g. yogurt but be sure it is unsweetened, can usually find at Villa Market.

    .

    Good helpful reply Sheryl.

A year or so ago I knew a fellow in Patts who finally told me he'd been suffering from diarrhea for over three months. He was a legendary tight wad and didn't want to pay for a doctor's advice or tests to find out about his condition. He finally learned he did indeed have a parasite. I don't know what the outcome of his situation was.

I only know the street food seems to lend itself to these kind of issues. While "stall food" may be quaint and cultural, I think it's safety may at times be especially suspect for falangs. How do you address that Sheryl?

Do you scarf it down with wanton abandon? I'm sincerely curious as you seem to be aware of these things.

  7. This thread has been a pleasure for me to read. There isn't a single ankle biting remark or any negativity at all. It's been a "just the facts mam" kind of thread.

I still have to ask if anyone has any recent information about:

"I've read there are "private cars" available but can't find much information on them. Any recent experiences?

Anybody tried this train option or heard anything about it? A double click should enlarge it.

I came to the realization I don't need to try to see all the country at one time. I live near it and can return without a problem. The first step is always the hardest. I have all the time left in my life and no reason to hurry. I'll start in the north and go south to Hue on the train and return to hanoi. I'll get a 30 day visa for now and spend that time there.

Next time I'll hit the south.

Thanks again to all the contributors for the great input.

  8. I wonder how many who have so many times said they moved to Thailand for the freedom, and to escape a nanny state, are now all for this nanny state rule?

WEll put. I've little doubt your comment applies to many.

Every smoker is aware of the issues regarding smoking. I know when I stopped 6 or more years ago I swore to myself I'd never even come close the the holier than thou former smokers or non smokers.

Hell, charge an admission price for well ventilated rooms at the airport fur christ sake if that's what it takes.

  9. I don't smoke, but I used to. I loved smoking. If I found out that the world was going to end tomorrow, I would go out and buy three packs of cigarettes, sit on my balcony and enjoy the setting sun right up to the last minute.

Flying is very hard for smokers. It's better to keep the rooms and give them a little comfort and stress relief.

It sure didn't take the world ending the next day for me to buy three packs. Years ago I used to puff away that many and more on a daily basis.

I say let smokers have their room at the airport.

  10. Bring it on, my next house in the UK just got cheaper.

Also, put your money into assets that are more likely to rise with

inflation. I think property is a good bet at the moment, especially in

    the UK and USA.

Me too, hence my intent to buy another property in the Uk this summer, anyone got any better ideas, I am all ears.

A Newspaper in the UK a few days ago was forcasting an average £10,000 rise in house prices for the coming year. But maybe they are running short of readers?

But who knows ? my last property in the UK was increasing in value £1000 a month for 2.5 years.

Don't get snagged by averages. Areas and types of property behave quite differently.

But of course! the North has always been much cheaper to buy a house than the South, and certain parts of the Country, right down to location can have major effects on house prices.

Is that a veiled dig on the North? 555
  11. On my Phuket visit I honestly don't recall seeing any lifeguards at all.

They may not have been visible past the landscape of umbrella/lounge chairs vendors or maybe they were mixed among the jet ski operators.

No wait, they were hopping on a reasonably priced tuk tuk knowing as a local they wouldn't be attacked and beaten senseless.

All of the above is just a joke as I honestly don't care what happens in Phuket. To each his own.

  12. Half your numbers are Baht, half are dollars. Makes things unnecessarily confusing.

You want to save 12k/month. Cutting rent to 8k/month and wiping out air-conditioning (easy once the rains come) will get you half way there. Not going to Big C will help. Cancel pasta, cheese and do all your shopping at local markets.

Cut the street food, you have kids, cook good food for them at home.

You're spending 54K a month for a family of four.

    That is not high.

Make more money if you feel you need it.

    This is true.
    .

Our situations are very different and I can only speak from my budgeting mind which is the only part of my brain working sometimes. 555

I think you've done well in managing to keep things at the USD 1800 level. It's probably helpful for those not from the USA to know how many baht that is so I'll just post that it's ฿53,478. I think you manage faily well.

If you want to reduce anything I can only agree with others that you can reduce your living quarters as far as you can stand. I knew a USA Lawyer who proudly lived in a small place in CM for ฿3,000 a month and he claimed he was happy with it. It wouldn't work for me but if I needed or wanted to reduce my expenses, I'd consider moving to the most simple place possible.

I think it's likely too late for anyone to suggest making more money. LOS is not the place to go to move up the salary ladder.

Personally if I wanted to reduce my spending, I'd move back to the USA. I don't need to make that reduction so I stay here.

    Good luck.

    What are poverty thresholds?

The poverty thresholds are the original version of the federal poverty measure, which was developed by Mollie Orshansky of the Social Security Administration in the 1960s. [2] Updated each year by the Census Bureau, the thresholds are used mainly for statistical purposesfor example, preparing the estimates of the number of Americans in poverty for each year's poverty report. The measure was devised to define and quantify poverty in America, and thereby provide a yardstick for progress or regress in antipoverty efforts, and in that sense has served the nation well.

Values of the poverty thresholds for the years since 1980 for families of different sizes are available on the Census Bureau's website. The most recent values of the poverty thresholds are provided in the table below. For example, a four-person family with two children with annual cash income of $22,811 is considered poor. For one- and two-person family units, the poverty thresholds differ by age; an individual under age 65 with income of $11,702 qualifies as poor, whereas an individual age 65 or older is poor at $10,788 annual income.

U.S. Census Bureau Poverty Thresholds, 2011

Size of Family Unit Poverty Threshold

    One person (unrelated individual) $11,484

    Under age 65 11,702

    Age 65 or older 10,788

    Two people 14,657

    Householder under age 65 15,139

Householder age 65 or older 13,609

    Three people 17,916

    Four people 23,021

    Five people 27,251

    Six people 30,847

    Seven people 35,085

    Eight people 39,064

    Nine people or more 46,572

  13. I've tried the search function of the forum and put in as many topics as my brain can produce. I keep getting a no results message.

I've also looked up the same topics on google and while helpful, so much of it is is fairly old and perhaps outdated.

    Situation:

I'm located not too far from Udon Thani. I'd like to spend three weeks or so in Vietnam with the Missus. I've read some people think it's better to allow more time for Hanoi rather than HCMC but for sure I want to see the US Embassy where the final lift off happened and the war essentially ended. I wouldn't be surprised to find before too long the former embassy will be knocked down to become a shopping mall.

I like the idea of seeing some countryside and am thinking about train travel. I've used the train a couple of times in LOS and found it was a good experience. I'm thinking about taking the train in Vietnam.

I've read there are "private cars" available but can't find much information on them. Any recent experiences?

What would you recommend for a trip to Vietnam?

I'd like to know about your thoughts regarding cities to visit, hotels to stay, as well as what you did in various cities you've seen.

All information will be much appreciated. If you've been there I'd like to hear about it.

    TIA

Maybe the ''friend of the OP'' kicked the dog away to have a relaxing dinner and then it got bitten but i wasnt there so only the OP can tell us the whole story smile.png

Why not ask the OP rather than make up stories. As you said "you weren't there" so why make up stories.

Imo, its the dog of the restaurants owner so if the owner wants his dog to walk or lay down in his restaurant its up the owner. You as the customer can decide if you would like to eat in his establishment or not, thats your choice again smile.png

If you think it OK for dogs (live meat not dead) to be in restaurants I'd hate to think what you allow in and around your house. I hope I never become a neighbor.

Ok here it goes Keesters smile.png

First of all, i am not making up any stories, just a insinuation about a possiblity how this situation of the OP could happened..

About your 2nd quote, its none of my or your business to interfere how the owner of that restaurant runs his business. If he wants to have pigs in his restaurant, thats his decision. Its the decision of the potential customers like you and me to decide to order some food inthere or not.

Dont have any clue what you mean about you hoping to never become my neighbor, anyways i not even bother to reply to that part of your quote smile.png

    .

Are there health laws that come into play here as one poster suggested because of the dog in the kitchen?

  15. I have good luck paying overdue bills at the 'post and pay' places typically find in the basement at Big C etc. You could try there first. There is a MEA office on Tiwanon road, near the Toshiba office I think. I don't know one closer to you.

You can miss 2 months payment before they come out to cut you off. When they turn up to disconnect the supply they will give you 24 hours if you promise to go straight to the office to pay.

    .

What a difference a venue change can make.

My situation is slightly different but still related to paying. I asked the Missus to call all the various providers ( True and a local cable company, water department, electric, and 3BB) to find out about paying in advance if we need to. I wanted to know about this so that when we go on holiday, I don't have to burden friends to pay the bills for me.

The electric company said no problem but, of course, we can't pay in advance at all. They said don't worry and that if we were 5 days late they'd just turn off the power and we could start it again after we come back from vacation. that is naturally after we clean the refrigerator of all the rot and etc that's built up in the few weeks without being turned on.

I really don't want to go through the auto pay set up at the bank.

Good to know some power companies do offer a grace period of sorts on the time frame. I wish our local company in Issan would be a little flexible.
