Sorry, Not good at either cars or motorbikes. Please don´t take it negative, but why not just leave it to a motorbike shop that have a bunch of young guys. They usually have bikes as an interest and a hobby. Usuallt not much they can´t fix. The Honda shops with their garage are just a bunch of tired dead heads that not like what they are doing.

That's solid advice and it certainly couldn't hurt many budgets.

I'd detest not having reliable transportation.

Saigon is fun. Has girls. Hanoi is Cultured. Philippines I don't like. Food is better in Vietnam. I made this video in and around Hanoi and north Thailand.

    Great fun

I've replied directly to the OP so I hope I'll be allowed this brief OT.

You mentioned being off your motorbike tour while I believe you were in Hanoi.

Did you find a motorbike tour in Hanoi?    I came up empty in my search three years ago.

I took two all day ones in Saigon and will never forget the fantastic  experiences.

I need to get back to Hanoi.     What a great city.

I like them both, pros and cons :Vietnam is significantly cheaper, especially hotels, although the pesos has slipped quite a bit so the difference isn't as glaring as it used to be. Vietnamese food is much better.

TThe PH still has more of that 3rd world (some call it shit hole) feel to it which I personally find attractive.

English is spoken widely, while English proficiency in Vietnam is even lower than in Thailand.

If you are looking for anything like Pattaya style nightlife, Philippines is definitely better.

I still don't quite get it why hotels are generally much more expensive in the PI as opposed to most of SEA.

I'd say the PI hotels generally speaking offer less for the money.

Internet included in price seems to remain a future amenity for Manila hotels at least.

I'm not sure based on my limited experience if I can agree with you about "English proficiency in Vietnam is even lower than in Thailand."

Off hand I'd say I had little to  no problems at all with using English in either North or South Vietnam.

town/cities in the PI can be real shitholes

the accent/national character in the PI I find annoying.

town/cities in the PI can be/  are real shitholes.

I like the PI a lot  but truth be truth.

The food??   Special taste buds required ( or perhaps no taste buds at all) in the PI.

Vietnam is the cat's meow.   Go for it..

But I'd allow for a future trip to the PI in your bucket list, for sure.

prisons are full of people who committed victimless crime.  It is the sworn duty of police to uphold the law; not interpret it to their liking.

I don't think you really answered my question meant  for discussion.

What harm do you personally  see as a result of overstays?

Oh yes,  if it is victimless crime, does the law make sense?    Should it be a law if victimless?     Curious..

Well if you care to read the first post, I was responding to it, so the location was implied.

I don't bother to try to read minds so your "implication" was not meaningful.

    Thanks anyway.

In this area, no you can't, Thai bodies only. Probably because of the legal situation.

    Bangkok probably.

Please clearly state WHERE you refer to.

That would help make your post meaningful.

This reminds me of a scam from the early 1980’s:  A well-dressed, English-speaking Thai man would approach foreigners, asking for 100 baht.  He explained that his car had been accidentally locked and he needed the money to hire a locksmith.

The story was eventually reported in the local English-language press, and I happened to read it.

A little later, my friend and I were approached by this same guy on Ploenchit Road.  Recognizing his story, we offered to go with him to his car and help him open it ourselves.  He declined of course, though I can’t remember the reason he gave for not accepting our help, if any.

Some of you folks who have been here a good while may recall that scam.

    You forgot the caps lock?

I have showed you the sign, I was interested in your opinion of where you thought the warning was, not a load of links.

You are also stated that they entered on the 23rd of June and that the rainy season doesn't start at the stroke of midnight of any month (I also have the ability to be sarcastic), that is what the sign is there for, it is advising them that it is business as usual.

I cannot make it more clearer than that, so I hope you enjoy the rest of your day and I will call it a day as further debating seems pointless.

Are you blind to the links that clearly show underscore to the  "warning"?

Please let it go as clearly we are unable to communicate.   No bad feelings but  I believe it's best we just let it go.

Good luck to you..   And for sure there were/are  warnings clearly  posted at the entrance to the cave

The warning sign is posted as sarcasm?    I don't think so as events proved to be the case.

Just be happy the boys are safe.   Isn't that the most important matter with this event?

maybe you can show me the "warning".

Sir,  I'm, not going to argue with you about this but  a few publications seem to also favor the word warning in regards to the sign.  What you and I   have here is likely  a failure to communicate.   I'll post the "warnings" for you from a few publications

I'm happy the boys were safely rescued.   Please be clear about that.

I guess what nags at me in the back of my mind is how this seems to be a result of the general lack of  personal responsibility I see continually in Thailand.    Those of us who drive see it clearly demonstrated in the driving habits in the Kingdom.     And those of us who have had some exposure to the Thai education system know full well how children are taught in this country.   The education system is absolutely awful and  the  results of the system are abundantly clear.

I still ponder the thought  as to whether anyone should have some responsibility  in this matter or not.

I'm certainly not pointing any fingers so please  don't start there.

Lastly, they entered the cave on June 23rd.    As far as I know,  rainy season does not start at the stroke of midnight on any particular month.

If ever there was an event where it would be nice to be able to turn back the clock...

There is no warning on the sign (I cannot read Thai) but in english it clearly states it is open, how can you possibly construe that to be a warning.

And no the coach should not walk away without any responsibility, he should walk away with a medal!

I didn't bother to take a screen shot of it but an article run by USAToday showed a warning sign posted at the entrance of the cave.  The sign was indeed in both Thai and English and specifically warned against entering the cave between July and November due to  flood dangers caused by rains

    Fake News you think?

Anyway that's the reason for my post and if such a sign existed does that change things in any way?

I haven't followed this event as closely as some but I thought in all likelihood the same sign would have appeared on one  of the articles posted by THV.

I hope that brings some clarity as to why I made the post I made.

Wrong in hindsight is not necessarily the same as something one should have known not to do at the time.

Cave still open for exploring and normally free of flooding at that time of year.

    Cave dry and skies clear.

Easy to cast blame now but can any of us be sure we couldn't have made the same mistake?

It definitely sounds like he did all the right things once they got trapped, even to the detriment of his own health.

If these boys do not all make it out alive the weight on him will be enormous. Even if they do, there is the loss if a rescuer (let us hope it stays at just one rescuer).

A very heavy mental burden indeed.

No call to add to it with recriminations.

How does that clear warning sign in both Thai and English fit into the mix?

Should the young man simple walk away without any responsibility?
