I think you need to rethink it all, unless of course you've got some verifiable numbers to support what you claim?

Firstly, Thailand is an international tourist destination and tourists tend to blow off steam, act out of character and do crazy things whilst on holiday, just like tourists do everywhere in hot climates. That doesn't mean your so called Full Moon Party idiots and alcoholics live here and need to be deported!

Secondly, just because the media make s a big deal out of the arrest of a criminal or paedophile doesn't mean there are thousands of them living here, lurking and waiting to pounce, I'm pretty  sure there are more pedo's and criminals per capita in the UK than in Thailand, should they also be deported and if so, to where!

As for sex tourists, I presume you came here for the temples and the pristine beaches, right!

    What pristine beaches ?

Notice that the embassy official exchange rate is listed on the right side of this page:

    https://th.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/service-fees/

It has been pegged at 35 baht per dollar since at least August 8.

A bank draft for 1750 baht is currently needed to get the notary seal on the income statement.

Wrong every year I pay in cash Thai baht for the last seven years.

I have recently decided to let her do most of the driving (even if it does mean looking through the gap in my fingers that are covering my eyes,... you know,.... like when we used to watch "Dracula" in the movies when we were kids.

I put the car in her name also. My reasons....(1) My eyes are not as good now as they used to be...but my biggest reason.... (2) One day I got the notion into my head that I could lose everything I have here (house and a couple of condos) in a jiffy if I got myself tangled up in a nasty accident. God forbid, but suppose I maimed, or even worse ....while I was driving and the car and insurance were in my name?

I know at home I would be fully covered for all eventualities, but after living here 16 years now I have come to the conclusion that if "they" decided to stick it to me....they would win and I would come out on the losing side of things.

I have really enjoyed driving over almost every inch of Thailand since coming here and thank God that there have been no major disasters. (there was one incident about 8 years ago where an old lady on a motorcycle came across 3 lanes of traffic and appeared in front of the bonnet of my car like an apparition, she went sailing through the air into the middle gully on the Sukhumvit Rd.after I hit her and out of sight). I remember thinking at the time "What if she is dead"? She hadn't a screed of paperwork for her motorcycle , not even a helmet on her head. Even so, even though her husband and all the witnesses told the police that she was absolutely in the wrong, they made me come to the police station on more than one occasion and wouldn't let it lie until I got a quotation for the damage to my car which cost 2,400 Baht at the garage they recommended I go to. I didn't want to get it but my wife insisted. It turned out the garage was owned by the sister of the one who recommended it.

It brought home to me the reality of being a Farang and driving over here. I was never comfortable after that behind the wheel. I now try and stick to my motorbike and let herself deal with the worries.

If your wife is driving and has a nasty accident where a lot of money is wanted they will come after you the owner of the the car, so my lawyer tells me, only way out is have her name in the blue book, even then they will come after you as your a rich farang easy money.

I drive ... from the front seat, but she drives from the back seat!

Mine too, she has her own small Ford Fiesta, has been driving for two years but every time in my car me driving gives me constant advice which are really instructions, it really pisses her off when I say shut up, but she gets the point usually and will shut up for about a week then back to square one.

    still love her.

    Usufruct maybe?

The only way is a usafruct, however you still run the risk of the relationship going pear shaped, as the house is on her land and her mother and sister are some where in the picture they inc your then ex will want you out.

Could you continue to live there in the village alone under these circumstances, the answer must be no, however in life sometimes we have to take risks , this is a decision you have to make so good luck.

ps  I bought mine a house with a usafruct but a three hour drive away from her family.

I would advise him to calm down, get some perspective and ideally, invest it wisely and keep working while he thinks this through a bit more.

Does he have a house or other high value asset he would sell up or rent out?   With interest/dividends from the principle amount and potential rental income or, in the case of outright sale, that cash added to the principle amount to generate more passive income, that would provide a bit more breathing room and piece of mind.  Next boost down the road would be qualifying for a state pension to buffer reliance on the income producing assets.   I rather like the idea of keeping the house initially (if he's got one) and renting it out.  He could get here and later decide Thailand's not a good fit for him long term.

Probably not what he wants to hear, but that's often the case when advice runs counter to emotions.

  7. The first thing you will need to do is get proof of your income by doing a income affidavit at the US embassy. Info is here: http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/service/notarial-services.html#income_affidavit

Then since you are in Phuket you would need make a trip to the Thai consulate in Penang Malaysia to obtain a single entry non-o visa. You would attach a copy of the income affidavit to the visa application so that you can use the original to a apply for a one year extension of stay based upon retirement at immigration in Phuket during the last 30 days of the 90 entry the visa will allow.

ubon where on earth did you gain all this knowledge ? You help so many people, good job.

  8. You send her 20,000 a month and only see her once /twice a year. I think you must be very naive to think that your 20k is for living expenses alone.I would think that a good few Thai guys and even a few ferang have raised a glass or two to you.I think you should pull down the shutters on this one and search anew.I hear there are a lot of clean, honest, loyal, and truthful girls on soi 6 looking for one such as your self.

    Saints preserve us.

I realize even Bill Gates might say enough would be just a little bit more, but do you really think a person lives lavishly on 20,000 THB a month?

    In issan it's a fortune.

  9. A couple of weeks ago spring onions went from the usual 75B/kilo to 225B/kilo in Makro. That makes them nearly four times the price of chicken breast, which is ridiculous.

Recently I bought a very large fresh Iceberg lettuce at Sainsbury's in the UK for 50p, which is their standard everyday price. That's 25B. A much smaller and much older lettuce would be three times that in BigC here.

Someone is pocketing a lot of money here.

Around here there are a few itinerant onion's sellers, but they only have those little micro onions, the size of a cherry, i did try them once, 50 B for a kg, but to peel them off would take such a long time that i have given up after the first try.

Lettuce not easy to find, always overpriced anyway, here they like cabbage, they eat it raw and put it almost everywhere...

Rarely we can even find broccoli and cauliflowers, but they just taste awful, not sure why, i don't think it's the chemicals, because they almost always have little caterpillars inside, you just have to look for them while cleaning them up.

A tip on peeling the small onions, dunk them in boiling water for a few seconds and the skin rubs off.

  10. This is something I eat every day and at their very best they are only just passable I suspect because they are always picked green.

Here in Korat I noticed today in big c and tesco they have gone up to 55฿ a kilo from the usual 20.......25 ฿. Even in the market tonight they were really scarce suspect the vendors feel they won't sell too many.

  11. Yes Charlie I am referring to the service charge.

I always give a direct tip to the person serving us and maybe a small amount on the bill.

So the service charge mostly goes to management or is it divided up in most cases?

The service charge goes to the owner who normally uses it towards staff wages.

If the tip is left with the bill folder or on table then it normally goes into collective box to be divided between staff and usually the management takes a cut of up to 20%.

I prefer to tip the staff directly but sometimes they put this in the the collective box.

I once asked staff about what happened to the service charge and tips & was told that some customers before ordering state that they would not be paying the service charge and the manager waives it.

In a reputable joint the service charge does not go to the owner. It is collected by the establishment, and is shared pro rata among staff in addition to their wages (and any tips). In good hotels, during the high season the service charge can amount to several times the salary of low paid staff.

Some places do take a cut out of the service charge, ostensibly to use for various staff related expenses, which is unethical and probably illegal.

In restaurants and bars in Thailand, tips left on the tray or in the folder go into the collective tip box to be shared by staff. Again, it is unethical and probably illegal for management to take a cut; it certainly is illegal in many other countries.

A tip handed directly to a member of staff (tip meu) is generally kept by the person it is given to, though a few places have a policy that it should go into the box to be shared.

There are no real guidelines to tipping in Thailand; unlike in some countries it is not expected, but it is appreciated.

When people do tip it is often just the coins in the change, maybe along with a green note or two; sometimes a little or a lot more.

Really it is up to you, who gets the tip, and how much.

Matters not in Thailand if a certain practice is illegal, money is God.

  12. For over a year now you have to do your 90 day reports where you got your extension unless you formally change your address to a new office.

You can do your report to Phuket by mail or online while you are away. Or in person if you are there in person if you are there within 15 days before or 7days after your report date.

By mail do you have to send them your passport? If so difficult to travel as needed for hotel check in.

  13. Regarding an invitation letter from my family for accommodation, this can be scanned and printed off my end in Thailand right? Should I get her to sign it also? (sorry I am most likely over-thinking it and worrying due to the trip being only 5 weeks away).

Bank statements will be printed off my online banking website here in Thailand.

On this point I have always included the original letter and mailing envelope from people where I am going to stay. Send photo couples of you bank book not statements, as anyone can forge a statement. At the interview show your bank books .

Ps not you your gf, as you will not be interviewed .
