  1. Why would a 28 year old thai owning a restaurant seem suspicious ?

I agree. The original comment was bloody stupid

What difference does it make how old is the owner, and what flag is hanging outside, Norwegian or Mongolian?

This is a useful news bit, especially to recent expats, and people not familiar with Thai parking traditions.

  2. au contraire

i was once treated to the same abuse on second road on the right side almost opposite soi 7

outside a massage shop, i parked nicely and was told to move by a person that came out the shop

i told her that it was the kings highway and i was allowed to park there

she said this is mafia shop

    i said never mind

she said maybe you have problem with car

i took her picture and i said maybe you have problem with shop window at 4 in morning

i took some pictures of the car and left the on board cameras running and pointed to the shop front

when i returned an hour later all was well

she stayed in the shop scowling and flipped me the bird as i left

    i laughed

(btw i understand Thai ways and know any Thai who says mafia is a moron)

    You were lucky that time.

But it may not work out well for next foreigner who's told not to park at a spot that a local thinks he owns.

I would not take that chance, and I would advise to listen and not park there, if a Thai tells you not to.

Blackman, you replied with a picture, a cat writing the following line:

'I didnt realise you are an expert of how how I live my life..'

When did I tell you how you should live your life? How am I an expert about anything about you? I said that maybe you got lucky, when you parked despite a Thai telling you not to, and next guy who uses your method to park a car or bike may not be so lucy. Notice NEXT GUY, that means not you.

Did you read todays news section, Jan 11th 2014 , about shots fired over parking dispute. Thankfully nobody was hurt or killed.

You advice to fellow foreigners is to ignore Thai warning, and park where you want. That is bad advice, it is terrible advice, and as todays news report shows, you can be killed over parking dispute in this country.

You have lived in Pattaya for years, yes? How can you give such bad advice? Not just bad advice , if people follow your advice, they risk having a car or a bike damaged, or worse. Living here for years you must know that! Everybody who lives here knows that.

Again, in no way did I tell you that Im an expert of how u live your life, and it not business how and where u park.

But why you twist what I said? Please point me out when did I tell u how you should live your life?

  3. When I saw Steven Fry (the gay British actor comedian) criticising the new Russian laws and linking it to Sochi, I thought - fair enough, but if you really want to speak out, why not say something about the upcoming football/soccer championship in Quatar where same-sex sex is still punishable by stoning to death.
Two points, dude. 1. This thread is about RUSSIA. A specific issue. It is not about Qatar. Protesting the granting of major games to Qatar is a worthy issue but a DIFFERENT one. Also with an Islamic country, you're getting into the thorny area of SHARIA law, something westerners pretty much have no hope of ever influencing. 2. I think you have posted misinformation. The criminilization of homosexuality in Qatar is bad, but did you just make up a story about stoning laws? Because I don't think they exist.
Since 2004, Article 296 of the current Penal Code (Law 11/2004)[3] stipulate imprisonment between 1 and 3 years for sodomy.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_Qatar
Old chap, the thread is not about Russia, it is about victimisation of homosexuals in Russia. Doesn't seem too far off topic to make a comparison with a similar sporting event in an even more gay-hostile country. The last time I was in Quatar, it was governed by Sharia Law, which in the case of male same-sex sex was traditionally punished by stoning to death; this punishment is still in force in some gulf countries. According to your wiki link, Sharia was abolished in Quatar in 2003... but " In 2013, it was announced that all Gulf Cooperative Countries had agreed to establish some form of, yet unknown, testing in order to ban gay foreigners from entering any of the countries. [2] "
And that is why Quatar will not be hosting Olympics any time soon.Soccer championship can not be compared with Olympic Games. Alltho I agree that Quatar should not be country to host any large international event.Brutal dictatorships, countries with terrible human rights record, should be not honoured and given respect, that comes with hosting big international evebts. If Russia wasn't chosen to host Olympics games of 2014, and Russia would apply today to host Olympics in 2018, their application wouldn't even be considered. In 2007 or so, when Russia won the bidding to host the games, it was a very different country then.Sent from my C6802 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app
  4. Interesting bit of news from Russia:

"Russia's powerful Orthodox Church proposed Friday a referendum on banning gay relations in the face of Western pressure over human rights ahead of next month's Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The Church's abrupt intervention came amid a growing debate over whether the Kremlin should mount a stronger defence of traditional values that many in the overwhelmingly conservative country view as coming under attack from Europe and the United States.

Church spokesman Vsevolod Chaplin pointed to polls showing more than half of Russians viewing homosexuality as either an illness or a crime as a sign that the country was ready to revert to a Soviet-era homosexual ban."

I was gonna post this in the thread 'What has god ever done for us?' This bit of news would fit there nicely! But probably better post it here.

  6. Valgehiir, if worst case scenario happens (which is not gonna happen) only retarded foreigner will not be able to find food on his own.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, since it seems you want this all to happen. I know people like you, have couple of friends like that.

Everybody with a brain will not have problems. But maybe therein lies the problem. Brains.

You dont know anything about me, or people like me. Pls stop your offtopic crap.

  7. How quickly everyone forgets. Wasn't it just a couple years ago that the floods interrupted the supply lines in this country and you couldn't get toilet paper and bottled water here in Chiang Mai for weeks?

I remember what it was like trying to find essential items like kitty litter and brown rice. I see nothing wrong with stocking up on essential items, knowing the way the centralized distribution channels for manufactured goods work in this country. The management of our local Tops, Tesco-Lotus,7-11, etc don't seem to have any independent purchasing authority. Like so much in so many sectors in this country, all the decision-making comes from Bangkok and if everyone stays away from work in Bangkok, no decisions get made.

Is there any harm in having a couple weeks supply of cat food around .... just in case?

Yes! During floods of fall 2011, in Pattaya there were days when 7 11 were out of drinking water. Shortages for almost for almost every basic item.

But reading this thread, half the people are ridiculing US embassy warning, many here say everything will be alright.

It will not be alright. With road blocks, even 2 days of delivery disruptions, there will be shortages of most everything.

How slow, how clueless you have to be to not understand how serious this is becoming?

  8. It's all going to be ok so long as everyone doesn't do anything stupid like start shooting, then watch all those well stocked stores shut up shop real quick. The CEO of The Mall has already said, one bullet gets fired and they start closing nearby supermarkets. I'm outside of Bangkok and last Sunday was the busiest I've seen it in Tesco since the floods. Now where did I store the boat...

Very likely there will be violence, and shooting.. And we have a civil war.

Everything is moving towards that. Violent confict is pretty much certainty now.

  9. I have a HP - the worst piece of junk ever, my first and my last HT product.
Well thanks it is good to know.

Pls dont take any of this as useful advice.

Laptop is often as good as a man using it.

Well well... my HP model is Pavillion dv6-2043. Good luck finding many positive reviews on internet from other users. Not saying they're all as bad but they seem to be very cheaply built, even more expensive models. I've read a lot of bad reviews on other HP models.

It would never occur to me to buy a HP notebook. But how bad can it be. Its just just a sticker, a logo on it.

I find HP not very sexy, so I wouldnt own one. But I doubt HP is worse than, say Dell. Its a cheap plastic machine, but HP manufacturers nothing, their machines come off the line in some factory in China, some have Lenovo logo, some Dell, some HP.

It is cheap consumer product, just like a vacuum cleaner.

That's simply not true. To suggest a Lenovo is the same as a HP is preposterous. Made in China, but designed by HP. They used to have an okay name, but I agree that HP now widely regarded as garbage... Lenovo, on the other hand, widely regarded as much better quality...

    Probably true.

  10. MacBook Air with windows. Fantastic bit of kitSent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Nothing fantastic about it in 2014.

It was a gorgeous machine in 2009, we now have Windows machines, Sony Pro 11 and 13, Samsung 9 series, 7 series.

There is no more reason to buy Air, just because it looks amazing , and install Windows on it immediately, as most people would.

We now finally have great industrial design notebooks, that are Windows to begin with.

Air is no longer best looking ultra portable, Sony Pro 11 and 13 are, choose black carbon, of course.

  13. Between think pad x240 (33,900) and Sony pro 13 (38,900)...which one should I go for. Both will last more than 6 hours on one single charge. Think pad x240 with 1366x760 screen matte 12.5" and Sony with 1920x1028 screen glossy 13.3". I would have to pay extra 5,000 baht for OEM windows 8 (Sony came with window 8 for that price)Sent from my Nexus 7 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

1300 by 700 is unacceptable. 1080p is the norm, unless you looking at low end, cheaper notenooks. But why would u or anybody? 1080p resolution is standard even for tablets in 2013, never mind real computers, like laptops

  14. HTC One Mini is in that price range while the HTC One is closer to 20k. Rated phone of the year for 2013 on several sites.

No need to pay 15.000 for anything mini.

5 used to look over the edge way large, they become a norm now.

5 inch is actually too small for smart phone, if u use it as a smart phone, meaning a computer.

Note 3 would be best phone at the moment, but if it is too big to carry around, or above budget, then its Nexus 5, nothing even comes close as far as 5 inchers go. It is far away from competition.

  15. Anybody have the price in Thailand for the latest Nexus 7.

    I am in Singapore right now and had a look/play in Funan shopping complex: 32gb wi-fi only : 425 S$ ~ 11.000 baht

    32gb with 4G 525 S$ ~ 13700 baht.

Man the screen is nice and it seems to have a very fast processor and even good sound too, tempted to buy one but would like to hear the current price in Thailand first.

    3G version 12.900 baht, 16Gb wifi only 9000 baht

Best 7 inch tablet, nothing even close to it.
